Fault tolerance and reliability patterns

Unknown Date (has links)
The need to achieve dependability in critical infrastructures has become indispensable for government and commercial enterprises. This need has become more necessary with the proliferation of malicious attacks on critical systems, such as healthcare, aerospace and airline applications. Additionally, due to the widespread use of web services in critical systems, the need to ensure their reliability is paramount. We believe that patterns can be used to achieve dependability. We conducted a survey of fault tolerance, reliability and web service products and patterns to better understand them. One objective of our survey is to evaluate the state of these patterns, and to investigate which standards are being used in products and their tool support. Our survey found that these patterns are insufficient, and many web services products do not use them. In light of this, we wrote some fault tolerance and web services reliability patterns and present an analysis of them. / by Ingrid A. Towards a methodology for building reliable systems

Unknown Date (has links)
Reliability is a key system characteristic that is an increasing concern for current systems. Greater reliability is necessary due to the new ways in which services are delivered to the public. Services are used by many industries, including health care, government, telecommunications, tools, and products. We have defined an approach to incorporate reliability along the stages of system development. We first did a survey of existing dependability patterns to evaluate their possible use in this methodology. We have defined a systematic methodology that helps the designer apply reliability in all steps of the development life cycle in the form of patterns. A systematic failure enumeration process to define corresponding countermeasures was proposed as a guideline to define where reliability is needed. We introduced the idea of failure patterns which show how failures manifest and propagate in a system. We also looked at how to combine reliability and security. Finally, we defined an approach to certify the level of reliability of an implemented web service. All these steps lead towards a complete methodology. / by Ingrid A. Software reliability prediction based on design metrics

Stineburg, Jeffrey January 1999 (has links)
This study has presented a new model for predicting software reliability based on design metrics. An introduction to the problem of software reliability is followed by a brief overview of software reliability models. A description of the models is given, including a discussion of some of the issues associated with them. The intractability of validating life-critical software is presented. Such validation is shown to require extended periods of test time that are impractical in real world situations. This problem is also inherent in fault tolerant software systems of the type currently being implemented in critical applications today. The design metrics developed at Ball State University is proposed as the basis of a new model for predicting software reliability from information available during the design phase of development. The thesis investigates the proposition that a relationship exists between the design metric D(G) and the errors that are found in the field. A study, performed on a subset of a large defense software system, discovered evidence to support the proposition. / Department of Computer Science

An interpretive study of software risk management perspectives.

Padayachee, Keshnee. January 2002 (has links)
This dissertation addresses risk management in the software development context. The discussion commences with the risks in software development and the necessity for a software risk management process. The emergent discourse is based on the shortfalls in current risk management practices, elaborated in the software risk management literature. This research proposes a framework for a field investigation of risk management in the context of a particular software development organization. It was experimentally tested within several companies. This framework was designed to provide an understanding of the software development risk phenomena from a project manager's perspective and to understand how this perspective affects their perception. This was done with respect to the consideration of the advantages and disadvantages of software risk management as regards its applicability or inapplicability, respectively. This study can be used as a precursor to improving research into the creation of new software risk management frameworks. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2002.

A decision support system framework for testing and evaluating software in organisations

Sekgweleo, Tefo Gordon January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (DPhil (Informatics))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018. / Increasingly, organisations in South African and across the world rely on software for various reasons, such as competitiveness and sustainability. The software are either developed in-house or purchased from the shelf. Irrespective of how the software was acquired, they do encounter challenges, from implementation to support, and use stages. The challenges sometimes hinder and are prohibitive to processes and activities that the software is intended to enable and support. Majority of the challenges that are encountered with software are attributed to the fact that they were not tested or appropriately tested before implementation. Some of the challenges has been costly to many organisations, particularly in South Africa. As a result, some organisations have been lacking in their efforts toward growth, competitiveness and sustainability. The challenges manifest from the fact that there are no testing tools and methods that can be easily customised for an organisation’s purposes. As a result, some organisations adopt more tools and methods for the same testing purposes, which has not solved the problem, as the challenges continue among South Africa organisations. Based on the challenges as stated above, this study was undertaken. The aim was to develop a decision support system framework, which can be used for software testing by any organisation, owing to its flexibility for customisation. The interpretivist and inductive approaches were employed. The qualitative methods and the case study design approach were applied. Three South African organisations, a private, public and small to medium enterprise (SME) were used as cases in this study. A set of criteria was used to select the organisations. The analysis of the data was guided by two sociotechnical theories, actor network theory (ANT) and diffusion of innovation (DOI). The theories were complementarily applied because of their different focuses. The actor network theory focuses on actors, which are both human and non-human, heterogeneity of networks, and the relationship between the actors within networks. This includes the interactions that happen at different moments as translated within the heterogeneous networks. Thus, ANT was employed to examine and gain better understanding of the factors that influence software testing in organisations. The DOI focuses on how new (fresh) ideas are diffused in an environment, with particular focus on innovation decision process, which constitute five stages: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation and confirmation. Findings from the data analysis of the three cases were further interpreted. Based on the interpretation, a decision support system framework was developed. The framework is intended to be of interest to software developers, software project managers and other stakeholders, most importantly, to provide guide to software testers in their tasks of testing software. Thus, this research is intended to be of interest and benefit to organisations and academic through its theoretical, practical and methodological contribution as detailed in the chapter seven (conclusion). In conclusion, even though this research is rigorous, comprehensive and holistic, there are room for future studies. I would like to propose that future research should be in the areas of measurement of software testing. Also, sociotechnical theories like structuration theory and technology acceptance model should be considered in the analysis of such studies.

A model checker for the LF system

Gerber, Erick D. B. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Computer aided veri cation techniques, such as model checking, can be used to improve the reliability of software. Model checking is an algorithmic approach to illustrate the correctness of temporal logic speci cations in the formal description of hardware and software systems. In contrast to traditional testing tools, model checking relies on an exhaustive search of all the possible con gurations that these systems may exhibit. Traditionally model checking is applied to abstract or high level designs of software. However, often interpreting or translating these abstract designs to implementations introduce subtle errors. In recent years one trend in model checking has been to apply the model checking algorithm directly to the implementations instead. This thesis is concerned with building an e cient model checker for a small concurrent langauge developed at the University of Stellenbosch. This special purpose langauge, LF, is aimed at developement of small embedded systems. The design of the language was carefully considered to promote safe programming practices. Furthermore, the language and its runtime support system was designed to allow directly model checking LF programs. To achieve this, the model checker extends the existing runtime support infrastructure to generate the state space of an executing LF program.
