New Cutting Tool Concept For Cylinder Boring

This thesis describes the process and result of generating concepts for a new adjustable cutting tool with integrated components. It was conducted under a period of ten weeks at the department R&D Digital Machining at Sandvik Coromant, Sandviken. The focus of the thesis was to generate and evaluate different concepts using well known methods such as TRIZ Contradiction and 40 principles, SCAMPER, Wish and Wonder, Brainstorming, Weight Determination matrix and Pugh matrix.  To catch up on the latest technologies and similar tools in the industry today a literature study was conducted which resulted in a requirement specification for the concept in accordance with expertise from Sandvik Coromant. The key problems to be solved were the demanding tolerances and precision together with high forces and the limited space in the tool body.   The thesis resulted in a selected concept with chosen components to meet the demanding requirements. The concept is presented in a 3D CAD-model with description and necessary data. The conclusion includes recommendations to Sandvik Coromant to further develop the selected concept into a prototype so that physical test can be performed and lifespan of electronic components can be evaluated.

Dammhantering vid väggsågning / Dust Management in wall sawing

Vid väggsågning i betong uppkommer det mycket damm. Detta damm tas till viss del upp av det vatten som appliceras för att kyla klingan under sågning, vilket leder till en så kallad slurry. Slurryn samt dammet behöver efter avklarad sågning tas upp vilket resulterar i extra arbetsmoment för brukaren av sågen. Det största problemet här är dock det damm som inandas vilket kan leda till sjukdomar såsom silikos. Dessa sjukdomar kommer i framtiden antagligen leda till nya lagkrav kring hur dammet behöver tas hand om innan brukaren kan andas in det. Syftet med studien har därmed varit att utreda hur damm och slurry kan tas upp vid väggsågning. Problemet med väggsågning gentemot andra former av bearbetning i betong har varit svårigheten att täta av gentemot ytan som bearbetning sker i. I fallen med borrning är det tillexempel möjligt att sluta av området och skapa undertryck som då suger upp damm och slurry. För att ge en grund till konceptframtagning utfördes en observation av väggsågning för att skapa förståelse för hur dammet och slurryn beter sig under sågning. Vidare utfördes även en fallstudie för att samla data gällande hur problemet löses idag samt samla punkter från industrin gällande vilka egenskaper lösningen bör ha för att anses som attraktiv i håltagningsindustrin. Utifrån den insamlade empirin genererades koncept med hjälp av brainstorming samt morfologi. Dessa utvärderades sedan med Husqvarna samt med hjälp av Pughs matris där kriterierna för sållningen togs utifrån fallstudiens resultat. Resultatet här blev en pådragsenhet som fäster i klingskyddets befintliga geometrier och tar upp damm och slurry vid den punkt i klingskyddet där den största delen av damm och slurry koncentreras vid sågning. Efter sållningen togs en prototyp fram för att kunna verifiera att damm och slurry kunde tas upp samt för att mäta dess effektivitet. Resultatet av prototyptestet var att konceptet kunde ta upp cirka 23% av slurryn samt markant reducera det synliga dammet. Konceptet kunde därmed anses uppfylla studiens syfte, speciellt gällande dammet då dess skadliga effekter på så sätt kan reduceras. / Wall sawing in concrete generates a lot of dust. The dust is partly collected by the water that is applied as a coolant for the blade, which leads to a mixture called ”slurry”. The slurry as well as the dust needs to be removed after the sawing has been completed, which adds extra steps to the process for the user of the saw. The biggest issue here is the dust that is inhaled by the user, which can lead to diseases such as silicosis . This will probably lead to new regulations regarding how dust is managed, which has been the background of this thesis. The purpose of this study is therefore to evaluate how dust and slurry can be collected during wall sawing. The problem in wall sawing compared to other forms of processing of concrete is the difficulty in creating a seal towards the surface where the processing is being executed. It is for instance easier to create a sealed space around the are of processing during drilling where you can create a vacuum to collect the dust and slurry. An observation was conducted in order to give a basis for how the dust and slurry is acting during sawing. A case study was also executed to gather data regarding how the problem is solved today in the industry as well as to provide intel regarding important attributes that  concepts must have in order to be considered attractive to the industry. Concepts were generated with the collected data as a base through brainstorming and morphology. The concepts were evaluated together with Husqvarna as well as with pugh’s matrix, where the set of criterias had been collected from the case study. The result was a slide on unit that locks to existing geometries and collects dust and slurry at the point where the biggest concentration is achieved during sawing. After the evaluation, a prototype was constructed in order to verify that dust and slurry could be collected and to measure the efficiency of the concept. The result of the test was that the prototype could collect approximately 23% of the slurry as well as significantly reduce the amount of visible dust. The concept could thereby fulfil the purpose of the study, especially regarding the decreasion of dust since the harmful effects of inhalation could be reduced.

Investigating the innovation capabilities of undergraduate engineering students

This thesis describes a method for measuring the innovation capabilities of mechanical engineering students and presents the results of a yearlong experiment. A review of relevant literature shows that it is unclear whether the innovation capabilities of engineering students increase or decrease over time. Experiments were conducted at two universities in which students were asked to redesign an everyday electromechanical product in a sketch-based concept generation activity. Student participants were also asked to complete a self-efficacy survey. Nearly one thousand concepts were generated from a combination of freshmen and seniors. The concepts were evaluated for originality, technical feasibility, and innovation characteristics by multiple raters. At both schools, the findings suggest that the senior-level engineering students are more creative than their freshman-level counterparts without sacrificing technical feasibility. Additionally, the seniors rated higher for originality at the end of the semester than they scored prior to taking their senior design class. These results suggest that the mechanical engineering curricula, and especially the senior-level Engineering Design courses, are having a positive effect on student creativity. / text

Creativity is important in the design and manufacture of successful products, yet neither creativity nor the early stages of design are well understood. This lack of understanding limits the tools that can be developed to support the crucial earlier stages of design that ultimately determine product success. My research aims to better understand creativity by studying and quantifying the potential of semantic stimuli (words) presented during concept generation. Natural language was chosen as design stimuli because language provides a systematic framework for stimuli generation. Furthermore, natural language is ubiquitous and intimately related to cognitive functions required in design such as reasoning and memory. Ultimately, the results of this research will assist in the development of early-design support tools. In a series of four experiments, the effects of semantic stimuli oppositely and similarly related to the experiment problem were examined with respect to creativity and designers’ language patterns. Results show that opposite-stimulus concepts were significantly more creative than similar-stimulus concepts. It also was observed that opposite stimuli elicited designer behaviours that may encourage creative concepts. These results suggest that the use of oppositely related stimulus words is a practical method for encouraging creative design.

The basis of the study lies with a newly patented gearbox by cardiologist and inventor Stig Lundbäck. Stig founded CorPower Ocean AB to further develop the gearbox to be used in a wave energy device. The purpose of this project is to develop a concept of a lifting system with CorPower Oceans gearbox that is more energy efficient than a hydraulic lifting system. The goal is to use technology from CorPower Oceans gearbox inversely to perform heavy lifting as an alternative to hydraulics. The project is limited to applying the gearbox and gear rack on a forklift with a lifting capacity of ten tons.The main tool in this project will be the product development process Systems Engineering where only the most relevant parts will be used to develop a concept. Calculations of the strength and dimensions of the gear racks are made to ensure the possibility of this solution.

The effects of empathic experience design techniques on product design innovation

The effects of empathic experience design (EED) on the product design process are investigated through a series of product redesign experimental studies. As defined, empathic experience design is the simulation of the experiences of a lead user, or someone who uses a product in an extreme condition. To better understand product innovation, the link between creativity in engineering design and commercial market success is explored through literature and a study of award-winning products is performed to analyze the current trends in innovation. The findings suggest that products are becoming increasingly more innovative in the ways in which they interact with users and their surroundings and that a gap exists between the current tools available for engineers to innovate and the types of innovations present in award-winning products. The application of EED to a concept generation study shows that empathic experiences while interacting with a prototype results in more innovative concepts over typical interactions. The experimental group also saw an increase in user interaction innovations and a decrease in technical feasibility. The application of EED to a customer needs study compares the effect of empathic experiences in an articulated use interview setting. The EED interviews discovered 2.5 times the number of latent customer needs than the control group. A slight decrease in the breadth of topics covered was also seen, but was compensated for when used in conjunction with categorical questioning. Overall the use of empathic experience design is shown to increase the level of innovation throughout the product design process. / text
