This thesis describes attempts to measure the shearing strength of freshly mixed concrete and relate it to standard "Workability"
tests.
The study is a continuation of investigations made by Mr. Li Yang in 1963-65 at the University of British Columbia. Yang measured the shearing strength of eight mixes at one velocity and obtained a type of "viscosity" at that speed. This thesis broadens the investigation to shear strength of eight different mixes at seven different speeds.
The shear box developed at the University of British Columbia and used by Mr. Yang was used in these further investigations and the shapes of the shear vs. rate of shearing strain or "viscosity" curves for eight different mixes was partially developed. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Civil Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Ambient vibrations of a reinforced concrete tower structure were recordedand analyzed to obtain the natural frequencies, the associated mode shapes and an estimate of the equivalent viscous damping.
The structure investigated consists of four concrete wall panels,rigidly connected at various levels and contains a light precast concrete stairwell. It is similar to typical components of larger structures,such as stairwells and elevator shafts or cores. The given information should be useful in offering details of the dynamic behaviour of this type of structural elements.
The experimental results are compared with the theoretical results obtained from two- and three-dimensional dynamic analyses using matrix methods applied to linear elastic systems with lumped masses. This study developed a finite element program suitable for analyzing one quarter of a rectangular tank. A rectangular plate element capable of both extension and flexure was used with appropriate coordinate transformations to enable interaction of the floor and wall plates.
Moment values throughout the tank were determined but not collected into tables because of their dependence on the width-to-length ratios and the height of the tank. A moment distribution type of method was developed so that critical vertical moment values could be rapidly determined without the direct use of a complex computer program. / Master of Science
