Testou-se a hipótese de que o extrativismo do babaçu tem influência fundamental nas condições econômicas e sociais das famílias assentadas e ajuda a mantê-las vinculadas à terra. Essa hipótese foi trabalhada a partir do referencial teórico a respeito da geração de renda em áreas de assentamentos e da importância do extrativismo vegetal para a população extrativista. O referencial analítico fundamenta-se na técnica da análise fatorial e de análise descritiva e comparativa das variáveis levantadas na área do assentamento. Este trabalho, indicou que o extrativismo vegetal do babaçu constitui-se numa importante atividade geradora de renda e trabalho, melhorando as condições econômicas e sociais da Gleba Riachuelo, na medida em que possibilita um aumento na renda familiar e, por constituir-se numa poupança nos períodos de entressafra agrícola, favorece a permanência do assentado na área, a imigração de famílias e o reconhecimento dessa Gleba como um assentamento modelo para a região em que se encontra. / This dissertation aimed at the analysis on the influence of the vegetable extractivism of the coconut babassu in Gleba Riachuelo, in Maranhão State. The hypothesis was tested that babassu extractivism has fundamental influence upon the economic and social conditions of the settled families and helps to keep them entailed to the land. This hypothesis was worked from the theoretical referential regarding to the generation of income in settled areas as well as the importance of the vegetable extractivism for the extractor population. The analytic referential is based on the technique of the factorial analysis and the descriptive and comparative analysis of the variables surveyed in the settlement area. This study pointed out that the vegetable extractivism of babassu is an important activity generating income and work, so improving the economical and social conditions in Gleba Riachuelo as it provides an increase in family income as and a saving during the agricultural inter-harvest periods, as well as favoring the settled' s permanence in the area, the family immigrations and the recognition of the Gleba Riachuelo as a settlement model for the region where it is located. / Dissertação importada do Alexandria
