This paper will examine the history of Hart Island, what led up to it being established, how it functioned as an institutional landscape in addition to a burial site, and what options are available for its preservation. Using Hart Island as a case study of the intersecting topics of politics, poverty, and preservation I hope to uncover what factors lead to the successful preservation of marginalized landscapes.
