An investigation into the role of compounds affecting friction, wear and lubricity

The high frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) is typically used to determine the lubricity of diesel fuels and has been accepted as the universal test apparatus in most countries of the world. A study was undertaken to analyse results obtained with the HFRR instrument by identifying crucial factors contributing to friction and wear mechanisms during a lubricity test under given conditions that may lead to a better understanding of test results obtained. The transient temperature distribution on a semiinfinite disk due to a circular continuous oscillatory heat source was also modelled. The model was used to calculate the contact temperature of a contact similar to what can be expected in the HFRR apparatus. For lubricated tests a mixture of n-hexadecane (cetane) as base fluid and palmitic acid as lubricity additive was used. Experimental results, including results obtained by running unlubricated (dry) tests and results obtained from literature were all considered to formulate the hypothesis that a fully functional additive film will not survive the full duration of the lubricity test, which is 75 minutes (ISO 12156-1, 2003). Friction values obtained in the experiments conducted were much higher than what is expected for boundary films formed by long chain carboxylic acids. Comparable friction values were obtained in the first few seconds of the tests, but the friction values increased indicating the destruction of the boundary film. Metal oxide lubrication dominates for the remainder of the test. Information of the exact mechanism prevailing in the crucial first few seconds of the test should be obtained by increasing the data acquisition rate of the apparatus. It is believed that junction growth through adhesion is the dominant factor in the initial stages of the test. GCxGC/TOF-MS showed the formation of hexane and heptane, which is a strong indication of the catalytic decomposition of the C16-hydrocarbons in the sample. / Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Chemical Engineering / unrestricted

Investigation of Disc/Pad Interface Temperatures in Friction Braking

yes / Maintaining appropriate levels of disc-pad interface temperature is critical for the overall operating effectiveness of disc brakes and implicitly the safety of the vehicle. Measurement and prediction of the distribution and magnitude of brake friction interface temperatures are difficult. A thermocouple method with an exposed hot junction configuration is used for interface temperature measurement in this study. Factors influencing the magnitude and distribution of interface temperature are discussed. It is found that there is a strong correlation between the contact area ratio and the interface maximum temperature. Using a designed experiment approach, the factors affecting the interface temperature, including the number of braking applications, sliding speed, braking load and type of friction material were studied. It was found that the number of braking applications affects the interface temperature the most. The real contact area between the disc and pad, i.e. pad regions where the bulk of the kinetic energy is dissipated via friction, has significant effect on the braking interface temperature. For understanding the effect of real contact area on local interface temperatures and friction coefficient, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is conducted. It is found that the maximum temperature at the friction interface does not increase linearly with decreasing contact area ratio. This finding is potentially significant in optimising the design and formulation of friction materials for stable friction and wear performance.

This paper deals with non-contact measurement of temperature in human faces. Principle of measurement of infrared radiation and construction of the thermal imager is described in a literature search. The main part of the paper is design of an algorithm for automatic processing and the detection of regions of interest in thermal images. The theoretical description of used methods is also included in this paper. The aim is to design and implement a program for automatic evaluation of temperature changes in a human face in a sequence of thermal images that were taken with short time delay. As a part of thesis is description of implementation of designed algorithm in programming enviroment MATLAB and the description of the user interface. The program was tested on the experimental data samples. Obtained results and possible limitations are also discused in this paper.

Le développement de nouvelles technologies permettant d’obtenir des procédés de fabrication novateurs, de même que l’utilisation de nouveaux matériaux et lubrifiants, ont rendu possible une amélioration globale de l’efficacité des systèmes mécaniques et la résolution de nombreuses défaillances. Néanmoins, certains types de détérioration comme le grippage restent difficiles à appréhender car ils résultent de nombreux paramètres connexes tels que le régime de lubrification, la température du contact et le coefficient de frottement. Le grippage est un phénomène qui apparait de manière brutale et qui se caractérise par des arrachements et des transferts de matières entre les surfaces en contact pouvant aller jusqu’à la destruction complète du système. Ce dernier est généralement associé à une mauvaise dissipation des calories entrainant des températures de contact élevées. De nombreux critères basés sur la dissipation d’énergie dans le contact ont été établis sans pour autant que l’un d’eux ne soit unanimement reconnu par la communauté scientifique. La première partie de cette étude a consisté à caractériser le comportement en frottement d’un couple matériau-lubrifiant grâce à l’utilisation d’une machine bi-disque. En parallèle, une modélisation thermique de ce banc d’essais a été réalisée en utilisant la méthode des réseaux thermiques. Les corrélations entre les formules analytiques et les mesures expérimentales ont permis d’aboutir à l’établissement d’une loi de frottement liant conditions de contact et température de masse des éprouvettes. Il a aussi pu être démontré que la température de masse des disques pouvait être considérablement différente de la température d’injection du lubrifiant en fonction des conditions opératoires. Ce résultat permet une analyse nouvelle des critères de grippage dont la plupart assimilent la température des éprouvettes à celle d’injection du lubrifiant. Malgré cela, les différents essais de grippage réalisés montrent que l’unique considération de la température de contact pour établir un critère de grippage s’avère insuffisante. / The development of new technologies, which allow innovative manufacturing processes, as well as the use of new materials and lubricants have led to an overall improvement of mechanical systems efficiency and reliability. However some failures, like scuffing, remain difficult to understand since they depend on many related parameters such as the lubrication regime, the contact temperature and the friction coefficient. Scuffing is a critical damage that appears suddenly and which is characterised by local welds and scratches between the sliding surfaces. It can lead to complete destruction of the mechanical system. This phenomenon is in general related to poor heat dissipation and overheating resulting in high contact temperature. Numerous studies were conducted in order to establish a scuffing criterion based on energetic approach. But none of them is unanimously recognized by the scientific community. The first part of this study consisted in characterizing the frictional behaviour of a given couple of lubricant and material thanks to the use of a twin-disc machine. In a second part, a thermal modelling of this test bench has been realised using the thermal network methodology. Correlations between analytical formulas and experimental measurements allowed to establish a friction law relating contact conditions and disc bulk temperature. It has also been demonstrated that the disc bulk temperature could be considerably different from the lubricant injection temperature depending on the operating conditions. This result allows a new interpretation of existing scuffing criteria, which for most of them consider the disc temperature to equal the oil temperature. Despite this analysis, the scuffing experiments performed reveal that accounting solely for the contact temperature is not sufficient to establish a reliable scuffing criterion.

Diploma thesis deals with basic physical quantities and laws relating to non-contact temperature measurement and emissivity determination of solids. It describes the design and implementation of the IR (Infra-Red) thermometer often missed with automatic emissivity correction. The first chapter explains the concept of temperature and basic principles of temperature measuring . The second chapter focuses on the history and theory of non-contact temperature measurement. Gradually are explained the concepts related to non-contact temperature measurement and the problem of determining the emissivity of the body. Next third chapter describes the proposed hardware solution of IR thermometer. The fourth chapter describes a software written for the IR thermometer. The fifth and last chapter summarizes the findings and knowledge from the implementation of non-contact thermometer and measuring emissivity.

The master‘s thesis deals with utilization of infrared camera for temperature measurement of electrical machines. The first part describes non-contact temperature measuring, the second part describes principle of sensors that evaluate quantity of incident infrared radiation. In the next part there is termovision camera SAT-HY 6800 presented and the instructional manual for SAT Report computer programme created. This computer programme is used for analyzing of termovision pictures from the SAT-HY 6800 termovison camera. The chapter 7 describes temperature measuring of one-phase asynchronous motor type J22TO484. The chapter 8 describes temperature measuring of semiconductor components of EC motor G6 series. Both of these motors are produced by ATAS elektromotory Náchod a.s. The last part of the thesis describes creation of animation of one-phase asynchronous motor type J22TO455. The animation was created in 3ds Max computer programme.
