<p>The aim of this thesis is to investigate the written guidelines for students attending studies at their first semester on a teachers training programme and a beginners course in Educational Sciences. In our study, we have carried out a comparison between four Swedish higher education establishments and their respective teacher training programmes.</p><p>The purpose of this study is to examine how the term "intercultural" is applied in the written guidelines for the Educational Science courses at the following institutions; Södertörns University Collage, Stockholm Institute of Education, Luleå University of Technology and Malmö University. We have used a method of content analysis to identify intercultural content in the respective universities guidelines regarding their Educational Science courses.</p><p>Through our analysis of the written guidelines, we have reached the conclusion that Södertörn University College has the most markers of intercultural content, whereas the other Universities in our study showed somewhat similar results in the identifications of intercultural content and focused on other central words and expressions.</p>

This study examined the U.S. newspaper coverage of immigration in 2004. Previous studies have focused on the ideological implication of news coverage, showing that the news frames conveyed elites?? racism toward immigrants. Little research has been done to offer an overview of the general U.S. news content on immigration in the 21st century, such as a study on how topics, themes, and sources shape news frames. Guided by the principle of framing, this study explored the topics, themes, sources, frames, and differences of three major U.S. newspapers??The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Houston Chronicle??on immigration. One hundred and twenty-nine articles were examined for this study. The study found that a frame of ??confrontation and frustration?? emerged from the most dominant topics, themes, and sources present in the newspapers. The study also showed that the newspapers were less concerned about differentiating between ??who was legal and who was illegal.?? Half of the time, the newspapers studied represented immigrants, regardless of legal status, as one group. The newspapers were found to be more concerned about reporting the immigrants?? shared experience of living in a non-native country, including shared problems such as in home ownership and in education. Differences among newspapers showed The New York Times?? ??unofficial newspaperof record?? reputation, the Houston Chronicle??s local emphasis, and the Los Angeles Times?? reflection of minority power in California.

As a result of increased interest in the benefit of ties with others, researchers have been exploring the idea of social capital with increasing frequency over the past two decades (Portes, 1998). Although the volume of literature has accumulated and its application expanded, there has been a proliferation of misguided or poorly conceptualized social capital research (Portes, 2000; Furstenberg, 2005). This has not only affected its vigour (Portes, 1998), but has problematized its measurement. Although conceptualizing and defining have been heavily debated through the years, the issue of its measurement has received little more than casual scholarly recognition. Drawing on the works of Charles Lachenmeyer, this thesis offers a unique approach that merges dimensions of social capital measurement with aspects of “good” scientific practices to systematically review a sample of academic articles. Results suggest that assessments of the concept are problematized by article crafting and research-based problems.
