Orientador: Lúcia Granja / Banca: Hélio de Seixas Guimarães / Banca: Márcio Scheel / Resumo: A vasta contribuição de Machado de Assis ao longo dos 16 anos de circulação do periódico Jornal das famílias, de Baptiste-Louis Garnier, aponta para um conjunto literário que dispõe de cerca de oitenta contos veiculados, na maioria das vezes, de forma seriada. Majoritariamente endereçadas a um público leitor feminino, tais narrativas exploram temas capazes de satisfazer ao gosto das mulheres oitocentistas e, em vista disso, centram-se, em grande parte, em assuntos principalmente relacionados ao amor e ao casamento. Esta pesquisa enfatiza o cenário das núpcias exploradas pelo impresso de Garnier a fim de que se possa analisar, com maior destaque e propriedade, o trabalho feito por Machado no que concerne à temática da viuvez e à possível tomada de "liberdade" assumida pela mulher dentro dos limites sociais impostos pelo matrimônio e pela conjuntura paternalista característica da sociedade do XIX brasileiro. Para tanto, tendo como base de estudo o Jornal das famílias em toda a sua "longevidade", foram examinados 21 contos machadianos em cujo enredo há a presença de personagens viúvas relevantes para o desenvolvimento dramático do texto. Por meio da análise das figuras femininas enlutadas, foi possível nuançar os comportamentos atribuídos às viuvinhas a partir da consideração dos fatos explorados por cada narrativa, pelo olhar atento e crítico de Machado e, também, pelas próprias condições de produção circunscritas à ideologia da folha periódica em pauta. Tal proposta valeu-se da noção apresentada pela História Cultural de que os textos devem ser compreendidos mediante a avaliação do suporte material. Para a realização desta pesquisa, também foram imprescindíveis as investigações feitas pela sociologia da Literatura, pela fortuna crítica machadiana e, ainda, pela história da imprensa oitocentista no Brasil. Por fim, cabe acrescentar que, apesar do... / Abstract: Machado de Assis's vast contribution throughout the 16 years in which the magazine Jornal das famílias, by Baptiste-Louis Garnier, was issued points out to a literary set, which disposes of about eighty distributed short stories, mostly seriate. Mainly addressed to a female audience reader, such narratives explore themes to please nineteenth century women, thus, having their focus mostly on subjects related to love and marriage. This research emphasizes the nuptial scenario explored by Garnier's printing in order to analyze Machado's work concerning widowhood and the possible "freedom" assumed by women within the social boundaries imposed by matrimony and by the paternalistic circumstance, characteristic of Brazilian society from the nineteenth century. Having the Jornal das famílias, in its full "longevity," as basis for this study, Machado's 21 short stories were examined, all of which contained plots presenting widow characters who were relevant to the dramatic development of the text. Through the analysis of the bereaving female figures, it was possible to nuance the little widow's behavior by way of considering the explored facts in each narrative, Machado's attentive and critical eye, and also the conditions of the production circumscribed to the journal's current ideology. This proposal made use of the notion, presented by Cultural History, that the texts should be understood by means of the evaluation of supporting material. In order to do this research, it was essential the investigations carried on by the Sociology of Literature, by Machado's critical fortune, and also by the History of the nineteenth century Brazilian press. O periódico se notabilizou igualmente pela grande divulgação da literatura promovida ao longo dos anos, com a edição de centenas de textos de crítica e de ficção. Dentro desse quadro literário, a prosa ficcional ganhou relevo devido especialmente à presença do gênero conto que, ora alinhado à proposta de valorização de elementos nacionais, ora alvo das experiências estéticas, traduziu, em muitos momentos, o próprio espírito da publicação e de seus colaboradores. Tendo em vista a importância do gênero no periódico, o presente trabalho buscou examinar a presença dos contos na terceira fase da Revista Brasileira, atentando-se tanto para o papel desse gênero dentro da linha editorial do periódico quanto para os aspectos estéticos e ideológicos encerrados nesses textos / Abstract: The third period of Revista Brasileira: Jornal de Ciências, Letras e Artes, published between 1895 and 1899 in Brazil, was directed by the literary critic José Veríssimo and became prominent in gathering a select group or collaborators who thought of the main national issues from the end of the 19th century. Likewise, the periodic became notable, throughout the period, for the wide range of literary work promoted with the edition of hundreds of critic essays and literary fictions. In this literary scenario, prose fiction became noteworthy especially due to the presence of the short story genre. In numerous moments, it translated the spirit of the publication and of its collaborators; sometimes aligned with the valorization of national elements proposal, sometimes as a target of aesthetical experiences. Given the relevance of such genre in the periodic, this study examines the presence of short stories in the third phase of the Revista Brasileira focusing on the role that this genre played in the periodic editorial line, and on the aesthetic and ideological aspects embraced in such texts / Mestrado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Mestre em Teoria e História Literária
