This paper provides evidence that certain aspects of an elderly person's life can affect their sense of personal control and adjustment. Personal control was measured in a group of 75 elderly men and women, age 55 to 84 years, who were participating in multi-purpose senior centers in Broward County, Florida. Seventeen predictor variables, clustered into three groups, demographic, social behavior, and physical health, were utilized to predict personal control in this group of aged individuals. Locus of control was measured by an adaptation of Rotter's (1960) I-E scale (Cicirelli, 1980). One demographic variable social position, and three social behavior variables were significant predictors. Variables affecting a belief in external control were level of social position, level of inactivity, amount of social participation, contact with friends and relatives and the number of sickdays.

M.A. (Clinical Psychology) / It was deemed important to undertake a study on control, because divergent approaches toward the issue of control emerged, which have important consequences in terms of how change is to be effected in therapy. Haley, was chosen as representational of the viewpoint which presupposes that the issue of control" should be addressed explIcitly within the thrapeutic relationship and that the therapist should assume control to ensure the successful implementation of interventions. Keeney, a proponent of the Ecosystemic Viewpoint, refutes the notion of control, criticising it for being a product of a linear reductionistic epistemology. He views the therapist's task as a facilitator for the system's own feedback mechanisms to recalibrate. As can be seen from such dichotomous viewpoints the tasks of the therapist differs in each case. Such a discrepancy needs to be resolved for the practicing psychologist to ensure therapeutic change. It is therefore the purpose of this study to examine whether this debate can be resolved, and, if so, how.

Locus of desired control and participation in a retirement preparation program was investigated in relation to retirement attitudes and adjustment. Fifty-nine subjects, consisting of older workers and retirees from a large southwestern corporation, comprised the sample. An experimental group, consisting of 12 subjects, completed questionnaires prior to and following their participation in the retirement preparation program. A control group, consisting of 15 subjects, completed the same questionnaires at approximately the same times as did the experimental group, but did not receive retirement preparation. A third group, consisting of 20 retirees who had a previous retirement preparation experience and 12 retirees who had not had such a retirement preparation experience, completed similar questionnaires.
