A resource allocation system for invasive alien plant control on the St. Francis ConservancyReeves, Brian January 2009 (has links)
Alien invasive species pose a great threat to ecosystems and human communities (Richardson & van Wilgen 2004; Hobbs & Humphries 1995). On private lands, there is a need to find institutional, administrative and scientific responses to the alien plant problem that operate beyond the scale imposed by property boundaries (Slocombe 1998; Grumbine 1994). One such response is the development and support of institutions, such as the St Francis Conservancy, that foster cross-boundary management of landscapes (Hurley et al. 2002). This study seeks to promote collective decision-making and collaborative management by private landowners through the development of a resource allocation system for the control of alien invasive plants on the St Francis Conservancy. The conservancy is located in the south-eastern lowlands of the Cape Floristic Region, between the villages of Cape St Francis and Oyster Bay, and is comprised of the properties of multiple landowners. Mutliple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques were integrated to provide a spatially explicit resource allocation system that considered environmental, social and economic concerns. The MCDA technique selected for use was the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). This technique has a record of providing robust, defensible decisions and enabled the resource allocation decision-problem to be decomposed into a hierarchy of objectives, criteria and indicators. Stakeholders participated in the development of the resource allocation system, especially through providing input into the determination of the relative importance of criteria and indicators through the assignment of weights. Various weighting scenarios were presented and these were interpreted into an ii implementation plan. The costs and effort required to clear alien plants were estimated, and obstacles facing the implementation of the plan were identified.

Development of biological control strategies against sirex noctilio (Fabricius) on Sappi Forests (Ltd) Landholdings in the summer rainfall regions of South AfricaVerleur, Peter Marcel January 2009 (has links)
The commercial forest industry in South Africa is predominantly dependent on large tracts of exotic monoculture plantations. While this simplifies management practice, there is always the inherent danger posed by introduced pests and diseases. Classical biological control is usually the most effective control method against introduced exotic pests. Climatic factors and seasonal differences may negatively affect the ability of the natural enemies to establish successfully at the new location. Successful establishment of the natural enemies usually results in control over the pest within four years. Sirex noctilio naturally occurs in the mediterranean countries of Europe and North Africa. It is the only member of the Siricid family capable of killing living pine trees. Sirex noctilio was accidentally introduced into New Zealand from Europe during the early 1900s. It has since been found in Australia, Brazil, Argentina South Africa and Chile. Initial biological control in New Zealand and Tasmania was through the release of Siricid specific parasitoid wasps from Europe and North America. The discovery of the accidental introduction of the entomophagous nematode Beddingia siricidicola and its subsequent artificial culturing for release provided the platform for the biological control methodology, which brought the Sirex woodwasp under control. The methods and natural enemies used in New Zealand and Australia were introduced by the South American countries and in the Western Cape of South Africa. Successful biological control was achieved in the Western Cape within two years after the initial introduction of the nematode B. siricidicola. The migration of S. noctilio into the summer rainfall regions of South Africa occurred in the absence of the associated natural enemies. This resulted in rapid population growth of the pest and substantial damage was caused to plantations of Pinus patula in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Initial attempts at introducing B. siricidicola during 2004 were not very successful. This study contributes to the understanding and adaptation of the biological control methods to the summer rainfall climate. The key finding was that in the summer rainfall climate, only the bottom third of nematode inoculated S. noctilio infested trees produced parasitized adults during the emergence period. A comparative study was done on log samples from S. noctilio infested trees collected in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. iv An adapted nematode inoculation technique for pulpwood plantations in the summer rainfall regions was developed and implemented in mass inoculations with B. siricidicola during 2007 and 2008. Locally available herbicides were tested for suitability of use in the establishment of trap trees, which would attract ovipositing S. noctilio females in situations where low numbers of the woodwasp occur. Determination of the levels of natural B. siricidicola parasitism in S. noctilio adults during the 2008 emergence period indicate successful establishment of the nematode in KwaZulu-Natal. Successful introduction of the parasitoid wasp Ibalia leucospoides into the summer rainfall regions has also been achieved.

This has various implications on the wellbeing of humans, animals, and planet earth itself. The choices consumers make regarding food not only affect our personal health, but it also directly affects the wellbeing of our current ecosystems where modern meat production systems place a worrying burden on the environment. Sustainable consumption practice is often a result of two main driving forces, the first being individual or health (egoistic) motives and the second being animal welfare and environmental concern (altruistic) motives. The growing demand for meat products worldwide is unsustainable and there is a clear gap between our responsible intentions as citizens of the world and our hedonic needs as consumers referred to as the ‘Citizen-Consumer’ gap. Experts argue that technological innovations and more efficient production methods would serve as a future solution for the environmental and social implications of the livestock industry however current scholars emphasise that a technological fix will not be sufficient and that it is imperative for society to undertake a behavioural fix, such as lowering meat intake and discovering more sustainable means of protein consumption
Consequently, the purpose of this study is to assess health consciousness, environmental concern and animal welfare as key predictors of consumers’ locus of control and attitudes towards meat consumption among university students, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The study used a design that was quantitative in nature, which resulted in the researcher employing a deductive approach, using a positivistic method. Data was collected by means of a survey questionnaire and was used to test the hypotheses. By means of Partial Least Squares – Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), the significance of the hypotheses statements was determined from a sample of 172 students enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. The findings generated by SmartPLS 3 statistical software revealed that health consciousness was the key predictor of external locus of control and that external locus of control had the most significant relationship with consumers’ attitude toward meat consumption, as compared to the second mediator variable – internal locus of control.
It is anticipated that the findings of this study will contribute to both theory and practice in modern society, and it is trusted that the findings of this study will greatly inform future research endeavours. / NG (2020)

Four trap crops were tested for their ability to intercept stinkbugs (Heteroptera pentatomidae) in a cucurbit field crop at Waterpoort, Limpopo Province. The experimental trap crops were: Sunnhemp (Crotolaria juncea), okra (Abelmoschus esculentum), mustard mixture (Brassica hirta and Brassica juncea) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). The surveys were based on visual counts of stinkbugs from all the trap crops. Stinkbugs were collected from trap crops in a field crop trial of cantaloupe (Cucumis melo). The correlation between Brassica hirta and Brassica juncea with other trap crops had a great variance. The repeated B. hirta and B. juncea inner row experiment in 2012 interestingly lured the green stinkbug (Nezara viridula) into the cantaloupe field.
Amongst the entire trap crops, stinkbugs recovered from Brassica hirta and Bassica juncea, exceeded the average of the other three trap crops. The number of adult N. viridula captured had significantly increased in March 2012 and started to drop on the B. hirta and B. juncea mixture in the first week of April. During this increase, the crops were at the seeding stage.
The perimeter trap-cropping system practiced for all four trap crops varied in the attraction of stinkbugs along the perimeter of the field and inner row. B. hirta and B. juncea attracted a high number of N. viridula along the perimeter but fewer in the inner row. The B. hirta and B. juncea recorded the highest number of N. viridula in the inner rows and outer rows, compared to the other four trap crops, followed by V. ungiuculata. Genetic and biological characterisation of a novel South African Plutella xylostella granulovirus (PlxyGV) isolateAbdulkadir, Fatima January 2014 (has links)
The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is an important pest of cruciferous crops worldwide. The prolonged use of synthetic chemical insecticides as a primary means of control has resulted in the development of resistance in pest populations. In addition, the pest has also evolved resistance to the bacterial insecticidal protein of Bacillus thuringiensis which is also widely used as a method of control. Baculoviruses are considered as effective alternatives to conventional methods of control when incorporated into integrated pest management (IPM) programmes. These viruses target the larval stages of insects, are generally host-specific and are safe for use in the environment. This study aimed to isolate a baculovirus from a laboratory-reared P. xylostella colony, characterise it genetically and then evaluate its virulence against neonate and fourth instar larvae. A laboratory colony of P. xylostella was established using pupae and asymptomatic larvae collected from a cabbage plantation outside Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The colony flourished in the laboratory due to prime conditions and availability of food. The duration of development from egg to adult was determined by observation and imaging of the various life stages. The mean developmental time from egg to adult was observed to be 14.59 ± 0.21 days. The population of the insects increased rapidly in number leading to overcrowding of the insect colony, and hence appearance of larvae with viral symptoms. Occlusion bodies (OBs) were extracted from symptomatic larval cadavers and purified by glycerol gradient centrifugation. Analysis of the purified OBs by transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of a granulovirus which was named PlxyGV-SA. The virus isolate was genetically characterised by restriction endonuclease analysis of the genomic DNA, and PCR amplification and sequencing of selected viral genes. The complete genome sequence of a Japanese P. xylostella granulovirus isolate, PlxyGV-Japan, has been deposited on the GenBank database providing a reference strain for comparison with DNA profiles and selected gene sequences of PlxyGV-SA. BLAST analysis of the granulin gene confirmed the isolation of a novel South African PlxyGV isolate. Comparison of the restriction profiles of PlxyGV-SA with profiles of PlxyGV-Japan and other documented PlxyGV profiles obtained by agarose gel electrophoresis revealed that PlxyGV-SA is a genetically distinct isolate. The data obtained from the sequencing and alignment of ecdysteroid UDP-glucosyltransferase (egt), late expression factor 8 (lef-8) and late expression factor 9 (lef-9) genes with those of PlxyGV-Japan also showed that PlxyGV-SA is a genetically different isolate. In order to determine the biological activity of PlxyGV-SA against neonate and fourth instar P. xylostella larvae, surface dose bioassays were conducted. The median lethal concentration of the virus required to kill 50% (LC₅₀) and 90% (LC₉₀) of the larvae was estimated by feeding insects with a range of doses. In addition, the time to kill 50% of the larvae (LT₅₀) was determined by feeding insects with the LC₉₀ concentration. Larval mortality was monitored daily until pupation. The data obtained from the dose response assays were subjected to probit analysis using Proban statistical software. The time response was determined using GraphPad Prism software (version 6.0). The LC₅₀ and LC₉₀ values for the neonate larvae were 3.56 × 10⁵ and 1.14 × 10⁷ OBs/ml respectively. The LT₅₀ was determined to be 104 hours. The neonate larvae were found to be more susceptible to infection than the fourth instar larvae with the same virus concentration. The concentrations used for the neonate larvae assay did not have a significant effect on the fourth instar as no mortality was recorded. This is the first study to describe a novel South African PlxyGV isolate and the results suggest that PlxyGV-SA has significant potential for development as an effective biopesticide for the control of P. xylostella in the field.

Exploring HIV and AIDS workplace programmes in the tourism industry of Nelson Mandela BayMahlangeni, Iviwe January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore and describe HIV and AIDS workplace programmes and policies (WPPs) in the tourism industry of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) in South Africa. This study adopted a quantitative and qualitative approach, in other words, a mixed approach. The reason for using more than one method of inquiry was to obtain a deeper understanding of the tourism industry of NMBM in terms of examined behaviour, and of the meaning of occurrences in the industry. To gather qualitative data concerning HIV and AIDS programmes, key informant stakeholders in the tourism industry at global, national, provincial, and local levels were identified to conduct in-depth interviews. These respondents were selected using the non-probability sampling method of quota sampling. This is a type of stratified sampling in which the selection of the strata within the sample is not random, but rather is typically left to the discretion of the interviewer (Wienclaw, 2015). One respondent for each level of the industry was selected, resulting in four key informant stakeholders participating in the qualitative research component of this study. The initial criterion for participation in the quantitative portion for this study was that tourism businesses based in NMBM must be able to produce robust evidence of HIV and AIDS WPPs. The researcher selected the probability sampling method of stratified random sampling with proportional allocation. This technique considers the known characteristics of the population (Wienclaw, 2015). A database of tourism businesses was obtained from the local tourism organisation, who are members of the governing body for local tourism. This database was cleaned, to eliminate any data that did not meet the participation criterion for the study. Ten per cent of the total number of businesses in the cleaned database were sampled. The simplest approach to sampling is to merely randomly select from the population by, for example, having a computer choose names at random from a list, or by selecting names from a hat (Wienclaw, 2015). Therefore, every fifth business listed on the sampled database was selected to participate. Unfortunately, surveys tend to have notoriously low return rates, and people are frequently reluctant to give out information over the phone. This was also the case for most of the tourism businesses in the sample. When emailed or telephoned, they refused to participate for various reasons. Some stated that HIV does not affect their business; others reported that their businesses were too small and therefore they could not afford to implement these programmes. Some businesses were hearing about the WPP for the very first time, while several others responded with simple disinterest in participating. The findings of the study are that although tourism is viewed as an important industry that contributes to the economy, tourism businesses do not include any intervention programmes with which to respond to the threat of HIV and AIDS to their businesses. Additionally, there is neither leadership nor support from any level of the tourism industry, to create a conducive environment for the adoption of HIV and AIDS WPPs by tourism businesses. The primary reason for the lack of uptake of these programmes is ignorance across cascading levels of the tourism industry, which includes tourism businesses. Additionally, a number of perceived barriers, such as size of business, are cited as the reasons why tourism workplaces in the NMBM fail to participate in HIV and AIDS WPPs. It is anticipated that this study will create further awareness of HIV and AIDS WPPs, in an industry that seems to have limited knowledge about such programmes. This study will also provide guidance regarding the requirements to implement effective HIV and AIDS WPPs.

Development of fungal biological control of four agriculturally important pests, Sitophilus oryzae, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, Planococcus ficus and Eldana saccharina, in South Africa.Chambers, Craig Brian. January 2005 (has links)
The use of entomopathogenic fungi to control agriculturally important pests, both in
greenhouses and in the field, has been demonstrated by various authors for a number of
years. This has been brought about by the development of resistance in certain pest
species to chemical applications and a growing public awareness of the safety
implications of residual insecticides. Several entomopathogenic fungi were tested
against four insect pests found in the Republic of South Africa (RSA), the greenhouse
whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae, the grapevine
mealybug, Planococcusficus and the sugarcane stem borer, Eldana saccharina. Further
concentration, temperature and humidity studies were conducted with selected isolates
on the rice weevil, S. oryzae.
Sitophilus oryzae is considered one ofthe most important pests of stored grain. Several
fungal isolates were tested against the rice weevil, four of which, B1, PPRI 6690, PPRI
6864 and PPRI 7067, were selected for further testing based on the mortality results over
a 21 d period. Varying conidial concentrations were applied and at high doses of 1x10 -6
conidia ml -1 with mortality rates of to 84% achieved. LT 50 values ranged from 6 - 68d.
Increased spore concentration resulted in an increase in overall mortality.
Temperature and humidity was found to affect the infection potential of the four isolates
tested. Four temperatures ranging from 15 - 30°C were tested. The highest mortality
rates were obtained at 25°C where mortality ranged from 46 - 65% in 14d. Mortality
rates decreased with decreasing temperature, and no mortality was recorded at 30°C.
Temperature was found to significantly alter the LT 50 values, increasing the LT 50 with
decreasing temperatures. Decreasing the humidity resulted in an increased LT 50 and a
reduction in the overall mortality rates. The mortality of S. oryzae ranged according to
the RH and isolate. Isolates Bland PPRI 6690 resulted in the highest mortalities of 80
and 83% at 92.5% RH, with LT 50's of 6.3d and 6.4d, respectively.
Several entomopathogenic fungi were tested against T vaporariorum, P. ficus and E.
saccharina, three key pests of South African crops. Nine fungal isolates were tested
against the greenhouse whitefly, T vaporariorum, with mortalities ranging from 26.7 - 74.7% over 14d. Beauveria bassiana Isolates Bl and PPRl 6690 produced the highest
mortality rates and were recommended for further pathogenicity testing against T.
vaporariorum.
Planococcus ficus is a common pest ofvineyards in the Western Cape Province, South
Africa. Nine entomopathogenic fungi were screened against P.ficus, only two of which
produced mortality. Eldana saccharina is a stalk borer, which infests sugarcane in large
areas of Southern Africa. Five isolates were tested against second and third instar larvae,
three of which, B1, PPRl 6864 and PPRl 6690 resulted in mortalities. Mean percentage
mortality was low for all three isolates.
From the study it was evident that two of the isolates tested, Bland PPRI 6690 (B.
bassiana), showed potential against three of the four pests, and two isolates of
Lecanicillium lecanii caused mortality in P. ficus. Further research and understanding of
the effect of environmental conditions, spore concentration and epizootic potential
would result in the further development of these isolates as future biological control
