An initial profile of desktop publishing use in Indiana corporations with 250 or more employees based on a random telephone survey

Costello, Larry A. January 1988 (has links)
This initial, descriptive study addressed the primary research question "What is a profile of desktop publishing use in Indiana Corporations with 250 or more employees?" The problem that led to the study was the lack of information on the topic, and as an aid to business people in evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of desktop publishing. The information compiled from the random telephone survey was intended to help put into perspective what systems and software were appropriate for certain public relations projects.A random telephone survey of 240 Indiana corporations was conducted in March 1988.The data gathered showed that only 31 of the 240 corporations contacted (13 percent) were using desktop publishing. Several conclusions could be drawn. There was a lack of understanding of the capabilities of desktop publishing among many of those contacted as well as a lack of money to purchase a system and time to train a user. The quality of output capability in desktop publishing at the time of the study was lower than most respondents wanted.A profile of the 31 corporations (13 percent) using desktop publishing would typify them as manufacturing companies who have used desktop publishing one year or less and have an average publications budget of $120,949. They are using desktop publishing to produce newsletters primarily. They did not have a knowledge of desktop publishing before purchasing the system, but would recommend its use to others. They cite increased control and time savings as the biggest benefits of owning and using desktop publishing, with an average time savings of 30%. They typically use the Macintosh computer with Pagemaker and Microsoft Word software. The manager using the system has been in his position five years or less (83.9%) and has an average age of 34. The maximum age among these managers was 47 years old.A profile of the non-users would read as follows: Of the 240 Indiana corporations with 250 or more employees surveyed, 152 (63.3 percent) did not use desktop publishing. The average publications budget at these companies was $103,058. Most of the non-users were manufacturing corporations. Their managers in charge of publications had been in their position five years or less (66.4%). The average age for those managers was 40, with the maximum being 64 years old. While the publication they produced most was the newsletter, they cited the following reasons for not using desktop publishing: saw no cost benefits for their publications and did not think the output quality was high enough. / Department of Journalism

Privatisation of Malaysian telecommunications : accounting and reporting change

Mohamed, Nafsiah January 1996 (has links)
This thesis examines the accounting policy and financial reporting changes made by Malaysian telecommunications between 1957 and 1994. During this period, the telecommunications sector moved from being a government department to being a government-owned company in 1987 and a partially privatised company in 1990. A periodisation analysis method (Tinker and Neimark, 1987) is adopted to divide the time frame into three discrete periods: Period 1 (1957-1970) when the Malaysian Telecommunications Department pursued the cash basis of accounting; Period 2 (1971-1986) when the Department was supposedly changing to the full accruals basis of accounting; and Period 3 (1987-1994) when the corporated Syarikat Telekom Malaysia achieved full compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Practice as an essential preliminary to flotation as Telekom Malaysia. Lüder's (1992) contingency model of public sector accounting innovations is used as a framework to analyse the stimuli to accounting change in Malaysian telecommunications, their effect on the expectations of change of users of accounting information and the behaviour of the producers of accounting information. The barriers to accounting change before corporisation are identified and the outcome of the process is evaluated. The discussion of privatisation as policy innovation stresses the importance of policy transfer from developed countries to developing countries and, in particular, the role model offered by experience in the United Kingdom to countries such as Malaysia. While acknowledging the importance of the influence of early experience of privatisation in developed countries, it is revealed that Malaysia had its own political and economic context which shaped privatisation policy and the manner in which it was implemented. Liberalisation of the market and regulation of telecommunications especially developed in a different way from that of the United Kingdom.

The use of defensive measures in hostile takeovers : a comparative study of takeover regulation in the US, the UK, Canada, the EU and Germany

Hanisch, Alexandra January 2002 (has links)
This Master's Thesis is a comparative study of the regulation of defensive measures in hostile takeovers. It consists of two main parts: In the first, the subject is approached from a theoretical point of view. The relevant factors for the regulation of defensive measures are outlined and analysed, followed by a discussion of the different ways of drafting such rules. This part concludes with a proposition concerning the most favourable form and content of a regulation. The second part describes hostile takeover regulation in the US, the UK, Canada, the EU and Germany, showing the diversity in that field of regulation in practice and the underlying reasons. It highlights and assesses the characteristics of each country and its regulation in the light of the considerations made in the first part, and provides an outlook concerning the future development of the regulation of defensive measures in hostile takeovers.

Risk assessment and post-merger integration : issues and research agenda ; Perceptions and attitudes towards risks arising from post-merger integration ; Literature survey of risk management of post-merger transition projects

Lung, Yun-Jye January 2007 (has links)
Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) for business can be regarded as a risk-taking activity for a growth company. So, this study adopts a behaviour-oriented risk management approach to examine failure risks arising from the M&A in the Taiwan context. Risk communication strategy is a major tool of that approach. In order to communicate risks arising from M&A to employees, furthermore, to achieve a successful post-merger integration, this study identifies a variety of risks from the post-merger integration, examines the differences between risk estimation and risk evaluation, and investigates a number of risk communication strategies for the target case by use of a questionnaire survey. Meanwhile, this thesis also investigates risk management on the post-merger transition structure. / Thesis (DBA(DoctorateofBusinessAdministration))--University of South Australia, 2007

The corporate treasury function: risk management and performance measurement

Sweeney, Mary Elizabeth Blundy Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
The Australian financial system has changed dramatically in recent years, creating both threats and opportunities for value adding activities. Many large corporations have set up a separate treasury division or department to handle their financing requirements. This thesis derives the rationale for a separate treasury function from theory of the firm. A framework has been developed by drawing upon both the old theory of the firm (transaction cost economics) and the new theory of the firm (agency theory) to determine the appropriate governance structure to manage financial arrangements.
