A Comparative study of the Metal Fabrication and Welding (Heavy) Trade Course in TAFE NSW between 2001 and 2004

Lidbury, Ross January 2007 (has links)
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This comparative study between the old Metal Fabrication and Welding (MF&W) trade course 7792 and the newly introduced MF&W trade course 3449, focuses on the data, discussions and recommendations which are likely to help establish what benefits or deficiencies this major change has had on the knowledge base of the current apprentices from the trade course. This is being accomplished by comparing the results from an exit test undertaken by stage III MF&W (Heavy) 7792 apprentices at the Hunter Institute of TAFE in 2001 and the results from exit tests for stage III MF&W (Heavy) 3449 apprentices in New South Wales (NSW) in 2004. These data are supplemented and complemented by an analysis of phone interviews with teachers of MF&W (Heavy) TAFE NSW conducted in 2005. A comparison of the data collected from the stage III Metal Fabrication and Welding (Heavy) apprentices who completed the exit tests in 2001 with those who completed the exit tests in 2004 at TAFE NSW, showed that there was a decline in exit knowledge in the mean scores of the apprentices. When the results of Institute 1's relating to 2001was compared with the results of 2004, the same pattern occurred, whereby it was shown that there was a decline in exit knowledge. This was due to the employers not understanding and embracing the change, or even favouring the changes. In 2004, there were no significant differences between the results of different NSW Institutes. This indicates that the level of material taught on-the-job and off-the-job did not differ across the State. A majority of the MF&W (Heavy) Teachers in NSW who were interviewed indicated that the course did not meet industry needs. The teachers expressed the opinion that the welding component was reasonable in its outcomes but felt that the fabrication part of the course lacked substance in the drawing interpretation, trade calculations and the computer aided drawing components of the course. They preferred the old method of teaching lock-step delivery over competency based training (CBT) method and overwhelmingly indicated that the CBT method had not improved the learning outcomes of the apprentices since the changes that occurred in 1991. The findings indicate that the on-the-job assessment of the apprentice’s training was largely ineffective due to the reluctance of the employers to participate in the system. The teachers felt that this was due mainly to the fact that the employers ‘tick and flick’ approach (whereby the apprentices are given a pass for the competency without completing it) towards doing the assessments. A large majority of those interviewed indicated that the changes to the trade course that occurred from 2001 to 2004 did not result in any improvements in the knowledge base of the apprentices.

"Strands of Student Talk": Exploring Reflection in Writing-Intensive Courses Across the Curriculum

Fulton, Anthony Tate 01 May 2015 (has links)
With the rise of the writing-to-learn (WTL) movement, studies on reflection and implementing reflective writing became key focal points in research on writing across the curriculum (WAC). Scholars from a wide range of disciplines have noted the benefits of implementing genres of writing that prompt students to look back and assess aspects of their own performance and understanding. Other inquiries examine if reflective writing impacts student performance, as well as analyze students' reflective processes and their perceptions of reflection. This investigation represents a continuation and expansion of these different research efforts on reflection across the curriculum. The goal of this work is to gain more knowledge about students' reflective processes and the language that they use to describe reflective thought and action by focusing on multiple, discipline-specific contexts. Through an exploratory study of four courses within two disciplines--English and History--at a large, public university, this work examines the reflective processes and perceptions of students and how their perceptions and processes align with their instructors' expectations. This study suggests that students and instructors in various disciplines have unique and sometimes divergent ways of using and talking about reflection, which presents implications for research on WAC and knowledge transfer. Aligning with the rich body of research in the field, this investigation uses reflection as both a subject of inquiry and a guiding action.

The groups of students involved in this research are of those who failed the eighth grade of primary education and are now doing extra class studies through the Teaching and Learning Project of Cycle II at the state of São Paulo. The objective of this research is to identify and to show the actions and the problems related to the pedagogical practice of the Mathematics teacher and to check if this actions propitiate, or not, advances in the process of learning of the these specials groups of students that are at the end of the basic education. This study also tried to show the daily routine of the Mathematics teacher who works in such particular classes and how they think, act and work with the interference of an institution as well as the relationships inside it. A qualitative approach was used in this research and the processes of investigation utilized were: documental analysis focused on the analysis of the already mentioned Project, application of questionnaire, class observation and interviews with the teachers. The analysis of the collected data revealed the teacher's disbelief about the project, mainly about the way that it was planed, promoted and implemented. The absence of schools's infrastructures and of others institutional conditions were highlighted as an obstacle for the project's success. One of the pointed conditions is referred to the way how schools are still working from the administrative view, similar to the series schools. Some of the investigated Mathematics teacher's revealed compromising with the project and showed as singular practice to work with these special students and even without the ideal conditions they arrived to guarantee learning conditions for them. It concludes that only with State, teachers and schools's compromising, students's learning conditions can be guarantee.

Os respondentes caracterizam-se por pertencerem às classes socioeconômicas B e C / There is an increasing demand for the vacancies offered by the technical courses. The enrollments outgrew above 70% between 2002 and 2010. It has rendered fundamental to turn our eyes to such an educational segment because the changes in the formal job market, associated with the promulgation of the Law 11.741, that disentails the High School from the Professional Education, has forced us to comprehend this distinct population, which goes into the Professional Education. After the application of questionnaires and the utilization of the socioeconomic criteria established by ABIPEME (Associação Brasileira de Institutos de Pesquisa de Mercado) the profile of the student enrolled in the various courses of the Escola Técnica Estadual Pedro D’Arcádia Neto, in Assis, is that of a population with a small numerical feminine superiority, born mostly in Assis, with a mean age around 24 years old, studying at night, single, without children, living with their parents. They are very interested in new technologies, they work, they do not attend library, they came from public schools and show clear objectives and hope for a good formation directed to the work market. They also intend to work and get into college, they understand that Internet, friends and television fulfill their needs of leisure. Finally, they are financially dependent from their parents, which, in turn, present complete High School studying and do outside works. The respondents characterized themselves as pertaining to B and C socioeconomic classes

Cursinhos alternativos e populares : movimentos territoriais de luta pelo acesso ao ensino público superior no Brasil. -

Castro, Clóves Alexandre de. January 2005 (has links)
Abstract: The main focus of this work is the alternative and popular preparatory undergraduation's courses told by theirs participants as processes which constituted a form of social improvement. In the last decades popular educators, students, pastoral's members, black people movement are important actors, enabling opportunity to young people from popular class to atudy when they seek alternatives preparatory courses to reach university courses. Nowadays this kind of preparatory courses are spread everywhere in Brazil. The target of these popular courses is an opposition to the reproduction of the competitive society of the capital. They where against exam's success inspired in the "meritocracy way", whitch not always reveal astual candidats? potentialities. The aims of this study have two branches linked of State influence in the Brazilian educational system. By institutions point of view, the origins of the Brazilian society was organized under Portuguese settlers? model, which mad great confusion between public and private subjects and their respective private interest. The overview of the Portuguese State constitution process makes possible to understand the constitution of Brazilian State and as political an cultural expression of the high society hegemony. In Brazil, this hegemony was installed and solidified through the command of the public machine attached in the great businesses with public investments. This scenery explains how Brazilian education was transformed like a business and why these businessmen are against social movements for openly education. / Mestre
