Cette thèse comporte trois parties, à travers lesquelles apparaît l'ambition de ce grand centre culturel et artistique d'apporter l'art moderne et contemporain non pas seulement à une élite, mais bien à tous les publics. La première partie a pour objectif d'explorer la création et la mise en place du Centre Pompidou, du point de vue politique, historique, ainsi que du point de vue architectural, à la fois original et pensé en fonction d tous les visiteurs. Dès son ouverture en 1977, deux séries d'expositions géo-culturelles répondent au au désir du Président Georges Pompidou, grand amateur d'art moderne et contemporain, de remettre Paris à la place culturelle que la capitale occupait avant la deuxième guerre mondiale. Toutes ces expositions géo-culturelles faisaient de Paris un initiateur et un novateur en matière d'art. La deuxième partie s’attache à une analyse portant sur trois expositions thématiques, qui présentent une nouvelle étape dans le développement du Centre, par leur façon d'aborder un sujet précis, de l'accompagner d'une trame et de renouveler la scénographie qui joue maintenant avec l'espace, la luminosité, les confrontations, les rapprochements de couleurs et de formes, afin d'éveiller la sensibilité de chaque visiteur. Big Bang soulignant deux aspects antagonistes de l'art moderne, la destruction et la création, et apparaissant comme une initiation à l'art moderne et contemporain et à ses nouvelles normes ; l'exposition elles tissant les liens entre l'art et un problème de société ( la place des femmes dans l'art ) ; Danser sa vie montrant l'enrichissement que la chorégraphie peut apporter au musée et faisant découvrir au public comment la danse et l'art plastique et visuel ont pu s'influencer réciproquement. La troisième partie aborde le renouveau de la transmission culturelle, grâce à tous les outils d'accompagnement de chaque exposition, ainsi que grâce aux conférences, spectacles, projections cinématographiques et aussi aux ateliers pédagogiques qui permettent d'éveiller la sensibilité des jeunes et de former le public de demain / This thesis has three sections, in which we present the ambition of a great cultural and artistic center to bring modern and contemporary art not only to an elite, but to all audiences. In the first section, we examine the political, historical and architectural elements which show that the Pompidou Center was designed to be accessible to a broad range of visitors. Since its opening in 1977, two series of cultural geography exhibitions have responded to the wish of President Georges Pompidou, a great lover of modern and contemporary art, to restore Paris to its pre-World War Two status of world cultural capital. All these geo-cultural exhibitions contributed to Paris’s status as an initiator and innovator in the arts. The second part of our study consists of an analysis of three thematic exhibitions. These exhibitions mark a new stage in the development of the Cnter. They are concerned with a specific subject, include a narrative and feature renewed scenography that now plays with space, luminosity, confrontations, reconciliations of colors and forms, in order to awaken the sensitivity of each visitor. Big Bang highlights two antagonistic aspects of modern art, destruction and creation, and is presented as an introduction to modern and contemporary art with its new standards. Elles@centrepompidou draws links between art and a social issue of the day--the place of women in art. Dancing one’s life shows the enrichment that choreography can bring to the museum by enhancing the experience of visual arts. The third part of this study thanks to all the tools which accompany each exhibition, and the conferences, shows, cinematographic projections and the pedagogical workshops. Administrators' Perspectives of Culture at a Multicampus Community College

The purpose of this study was to explore how administrators’ perceived the campus and administrative cultures found on a single campus of a multicampus community college system. A review of the literature revealed that the culture found in higher education institutions contains a high degree of human interactions, has a myriad of cultures, and that individuals play a significant role in the maintenance or the evolution of the cultures present. The study site was Neighborhood Campus which is one campus of a large urban community college system containing a total of eight campuses, Urban College. Kuh’s conventional organizational models served to identify the model on Neighborhood Campus, Levin’s cultural definitions described the campus culture, and cultural definitions from Bergquist and Pawlak formed the framework for the administrative culture. The study was guided by the following research questions: What are the administrators’ perspectives of the campus culture on a community college campus and what are the administrators’ perspectives of the administrative culture on a community college campus? A qualitative case study method was used, data collection included interviews, document and videograph reviews, and observations of administrative meetings. The participants for the interview portion of the study included 10 individuals defined as administrators. The study revealed that administrators’ perspectives of these cultures demonstrated five themes (student-centered, size, location, Hispanics, and family) served as contributors to the campus culture. The administrative culture was supported by six themes (size, team, collaboration, open, Inclusion, and rewards and recognition). The findings revealed three of Kuh’s conventional organizational models (rational, bureaucratic, and collegial models) were seen as being in place at Neighborhood Campus. Levin’s traditional and service cultures were seen in the campus culture with the service culture demonstrating dominance. Using Bergquist and Pawlak’s definitions, components of the collegial, managerial, and developmental cultures appear to be present in the administrative culture with the collegial culture serving as the dominant administrative culture. Through an understanding of these cultures and themes, administrators can provide leadership that is sensitive to these cultures, especially if institutional change is required.

Sign of the times: celebrity, truth, and legal storytelling

Contemporary Western legal storytelling relies heavily on images and discourses in popular culture to secure meaning and give credibility to certain legal arguments. This thesis focuses on the legal stories told in the trial of a celebrity in Western society. As a system of meaning, the celebrity sign operates on the levels of signification and affect. The ambiguous semiotic power of the celebrity sign forces an examination by the legal audience regarding the "real" nature of the celebrity. Reality and truth are seen to emanate from this private self. Moreover, the affective power of the celebrity sign guarantees that, at times, emotion will dictate how much credibility will be given to particular celebrity legal stories and what stories will be considered plausible by a jury. In the trial of a celebrity "Other" — that is, one of the celebrated few who defies the white male norm -- celebrity legal storytelling looks towards issues of race, class, and gender, in addition to celebrity, in order to secure meaning and effect credibility. The aesthetic acceptance of the celebrity "Other," along with discourses of authenticity in Western society, work to shape what is considered credible and true in a courtroom. These factors place limits on the semiotic and affective power of the celebrity "Other" and, thus, on what celebrity legal stories will be accepted as truth in the courtroom. Looking specifically at the 1949 acquittal of jazz singer, Billie Holiday, and the 1994 acquittal/partial conviction of gangsta rapper, Tupac Shakur, this thesis will demonstrate the ways in which law, culture, race, gender, class, and the celebrity intersect in the Western mass media and how this intersection affects legal process and the trial tactics utilized in the trial of a celebrity "Other." / Law, Peter A. La thèse Des superhéroïnes à Gotham City: une étude de la (re) définition des rôles genrés dans l'univers de Batman s'intéresse à l'apparition et à l'évolution de trois superhéroïnes – Catwoman, Batgirl et Batwoman – dans les comic books de l'éditeur DC Comics. Cette recherche vise à montrer comment le contexte de production a influencé les origines de ces personnages. Ces origines, si elles sont sans cesse réécrites dans les comic books, ne se détachent jamais totalement de ces éléments initiaux, mais construisent des variations à partir de ceux-ci. Depuis les années 1980, alors que le nombre total de superhéroïnes du catalogue de l'éditeur DC Comics augmente significativement, ces personnages se retrouvent soumis à de nouveaux stéréotypes de genre dans des récits où elles sont des personnages secondaires. Les récits parus postérieurement, dans lesquels Catwoman, Batgirl et Batwoman sont protagonistes, héritent de ces stéréotypes qu'ils peuvent reproduire, détourner et/ou dépasser. Catwoman, Batgirl et Batwoman, puisqu'elles apparaissent à différents moments de l'histoire des superhéroïnes et de l'éditeur DC Comics – les débuts des années 1940, la relève des superhéros durant les années 1960 et les questionnements autour des questions de représentativités des années 2000 – nous offrent trois approches différentes de la place des superhéroïnes dans l'univers de Batman. / Superheroines in Gotham City: (Re)Defined Gender Roles in the Batman Universe examines the emergence and evolution of three superheroines - Catwoman, Batgirl and Batwoman - in comic books from the publisher DC Comics. This research aims at showing how the production context has influenced the origin of these characters. Although rewritten time and again in comic books, these origin stories never completely detach themselves from their initial elements, instead creating variations on them. Since the 1980s, when the total number of superheroines in DC Comics' catalogue increased significantly, these characters have found themselves subjected to new gender stereotypes in stories where they are secondary characters. Later stories, where Catwoman, Batgirl and Batwoman are protagonists, inherit these stereotypes either by reproducing, diverting and/or overcoming them. Catwoman, Batgirl and Batwoman are three heroins created at different key moments in the history of both DC comics productions and superheroines : the early 1940s, the resurgence of superheroes in the 1960s, and the 2000s within a context of questioning representation issues in comics. As such, they present us with three different approaches to the role of superheroines in the Batman universe throughout its publication history.

Design, development and application of an automated framework for cell growth and laboratory evolution

Precise control over microbial cell growth conditions could enable detection of minute phenotypic changes, which would improve our understanding of how genotypes are shaped by adaptive selection. Although automated cell- culture systems such as bioreactors offer strict control over liquid culture conditions, they often do not scale to high-throughput or require cumbersome redesign to alter growth conditions. I report the design and validation of eVOLVER, a scalable DIY framework that can be configured to carry out high- throughput growth experiments in molecular evolution, systems biology, and microbiology. I perform high-throughput evolution of yeast across systematically varied population density niches to show how eVOLVER can precisely characterize adaptive niches. I describe growth selection using time-varying temperature programs on a genome-wide yeast knockout library to identify strains with altered sensitivity to changes in temperature magnitude or frequency. Inspired by large-scale integration of electronics and microfluidics, I also demonstrate millifluidic multiplexing modules that enable multiplexed media routing, cleaning, vial-to-vial transfers and automated yeast mating.
