My a Oni v perspektivě společnosti a práva / We and They in the perspective of society and lawHájková, Anna January 2014 (has links)
Abstract- We and They in the perspective of society and law This work reflects the attitude and perception of a Czech majority towards two different minorities i.e. Vietnamese and Roma. The main goal of this thesis is to describe the cultural aspects and specific values of these two minorities, to present an overview of factors that influence the way the majority and minority interact and live together. These factors are based either on legislation or on social psychological or sociological phenomena of these interactions. This work also tries to offer an answer to the questions regarding the causes of differences between these two minorities in the living together with the majority and if it is similar to the situation somewhere else in the world. Attention is also given to the role of law in facing these issues and solving the problems that arise for these minorities and if it is desirable and realistic to regulate the attitudes of minorities and majority towards each other. The main conclusion is that Roma and Vietnamese differ from each other in many aspects and the factors influencing their relations with the majority are very complex. There exist huge differences in perception and attitudes towards these two minorities in Czech Republic. Roma and Vietnamese have a different history, differ by...

Lummi stories from high school: an ethnohistory of the fishing wars of the 1970sMärker, Michael 11 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on the stories and experiences of
Lummi students and their teachers at Ferndale High School
from 1970 to 1980. The conditions of schooling for Lummis
were affected by the climate of anti-Indian hostility which
was fueled by the attitudes about Native fishing rights.
This conflict, referred to as the "fishing wars," culminated
in the landmark 1974 Boldt Decision. Throughout the 1970s
the school was a site where the cultural and political
conflicts of the community were played out.
This study examines the ways that Lummi students saw
the school and the choices they made for survival and
resistance in a complex and adverse environment. It is also
a study of the teachers who were at Ferndale during the 70s
and how they conducted themselves in an explosive crosscultural
educational setting.
Utilizing an ethnohistorical perspective, this study
brings forth the stories of both Lummi students and non-
Native teachers and sets them within the context of the
culture-conflict climate of Whatcom County in the 1970s.
This study shows how political issues were inextricably
welded to cultural issues for Indian students in the 1970s.

An examination of the development and maintenance of intercultural conflict mediation and resolution programs on university campuses in the United StatesJaniczak, Zaneta M. 01 January 2011 (has links)
Many colleges and universities throughout the United States have a long history of encouraging and maintaining a diverse community of international students and scholars on their campuses. As a result of the interaction within this great mix of cultures, interpersonal conflict of an intercultural nature has understandably developed. To cope with the conflicts between cultures, many institutions have developed intercultural mediation programs and resources. This research examines what some U.S. universities do to respond to the issue of international student and scholar intercultural conflict mediation and resolution. The study was designed to explore the different types of resources and services that have been developed and to study some of them in greater detail to gain a better understanding of their approaches and resulting issues and successes. The overall objective of this research was to learn how the various ways mediation programs offered at the selected universities work in practice.
The literature review was created to gain an overall understanding of conflict styles and conflict resolution approaches that are relevant to the many cultural groups who are in need of the mediation. My data collection process focused on how colleges and universities incorporate mediation programs into the campus at large. Data was gathered through 12 interviews with administrators who have experience working in the intercultural conflict mediation and resolution area; these programs were at the Universities of Washington and Minnesota, and Nevada, Reno and Michigan. From the interviews and the literature review, an annotated bibliography and guidelines were created to provide insights and recommendations for consideration by intercultural conflict mediation and resolution programs at educational institutions throughout the United States.
