Theoretically and computationally improving branch and bound through multivariate branching with internal cutting planes

Easton / Integer Programs (IP) are a class of discrete optimization problems that are utilized commercially to improve the function of various systems. Implementation is often aimed at reaching optimal financial objectives with constraints on resources and operation. While incredibly beneficial, IPs are NP-complete, with many IP models being unsolvable. Branch and bound (BB) is the primary method employed to solve IPs to optimality. BB is an exhaustive approach to enumerating all potential integer solutions for a given IP. By utilizing a hierarchical tree structure to tabulate progression of enumeration, BB can guarantee an optimal solution in finite time. However, BB can take an exponential number of iterations to solve an IP. Computationally, this can result in a tree structure that exceeds a computer’s memory capacity, or a prohibitively long solution time. This thesis introduces a modified version of BB call the Quaternary Hyperplane Branching Algorithm (QHBA). QHBA employs a quaternary branching scheme, utilizes hyperplane branching constraints, and generates internal cutting planes to increase efficiency. Implementation of these advancements theoretically improves QHBA in comparison to traditional BB. It can also be shown that QHBA guarantees an optimal solution in a finite number of iterations. A short computational study shows that QHBA results in a 26.7% decrease in solution times when compared to CPLEX, a commercially available IP solver.

Pup Matching: Model Formulations and Solution Approaches

We model Pup Matching, the logistics problem of matching or pairing semitrailers known as pups to cabs able to tow one or two pups simultaneously, as an NP-complete version of the Network Loading Problem (NLP). We examine a branch and bound solution approach tailored to the NLP formulation through the use of three families of cutting planes and four heuristic procedures. Theoretically, we specify facet defining conditions for a cut family that we refer to as odd flow inequalities and show that each heuristic yields a 2-approximation. Computationally, the cheapest of the four heuristic values achieved an average error of 1.3% among solved test problems randomly generated from realistic data. The branch and bound method solved to optimality 67% of these problems. Application of the cutting plane families reduced the average relative difference between upper and lower bounds prior to branching from 18.8% to 6.4%. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Three set inequalities in integer programming

Unfortunately, the time required to solve integer programs is exponential, so real world problems often cannot be solved. The knapsack problem is a form of integer programming that has only one constraint and can be used to strengthen cutting planes for general integer programs. These facts make finding new classes of facet-defining inequalities for the knapsack problem an extremely important area of research. This thesis introduces three set inequalities (TSI) and an algorithm for finding them. Theoretical results show that these inequalities will be of dimension at least 2, and can be facet defining for the knapsack problem under certain conditions. Another interesting aspect of these inequalities is that TSIs are some of the first facet-defining inequalities for knapsack problems that are not based on covers. Furthermore, the algorithm can be extended to generate multiple inequalities by implementing an enumerative branching tree. A small computational study is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of three set inequalities. The study compares running times of solving integer programs with and without three set inequalities, and is inconclusive.

Valid Inequalities for Mixed-Integer Linear and Mixed-Integer Conic Programs

Mixed-integer programming provides a natural framework for modeling optimization problems which require discrete decisions. Valid inequalities, used as cutting-planes and cuttingsurfaces in integer programming solvers, are an essential part of today’s integer programming technology. They enable the solution of mixed-integer programs of greater scale and complexity by providing tighter mathematical descriptions of the feasible solution set. This dissertation presents new structural results on general-purpose valid inequalities for mixedinteger linear and mixed-integer conic programs. Cut-generating functions are a priori formulas for generating a cutting-plane from the data of a mixed-integer linear program. This concept has its roots in the work of Balas, Gomory, and Johnson from the 1970s. It has received renewed attention in the past few years. Gomory and Johnson studied cut-generating functions for the corner relaxation of a mixedinteger linear program, which ignores the nonnegativity constraints on the basic variables in a tableau formulation. We consider models where these constraints are not ignored. In our first contribution, we generalize a classical result of Gomory and Johnson characterizing minimal cut-generating functions in terms of subadditivity, symmetry, and periodicity. Our analysis also exposes shortcomings in the usual definition of minimality in our general setting. To remedy this, we consider stronger notions of minimality and show that these impose additional structure on cut-generating functions. A stronger notion than the minimality of a cut-generating function is its extremality. While extreme cut-generating functions produce powerful cutting-planes, their structure can be very complicated. For the corner relaxation of a one-row integer linear program, Gomory and Johnson identified continuous, piecewise linear, minimal cut-generating functions with only two distinct slope values as a “simple” class of extreme cut-generating functions. In our second contribution, we establish a similar result for a one-row problem which takes the nonnegativity constraint on the basic variable into account. In our third contribution, we consider a multi-row model where only continuous nonbasic variables are present. Conforti, Cornuéjols, Daniilidis, Lemaréchal, and Malick recently showed that not all cutting-planes can be obtained from cut-generating functions in this framework. They also conjectured a natural condition under which cut-generating functions might be sufficient. In our third contribution, we prove that this conjecture is true. This justifies the recent research interest in cut-generating functions for this model. Despite the power of mixed-integer linear programming, many optimization problems of practical and theoretical interest cannot be modeled using a linear objective function and constraints alone. Next, we turn to a natural generalization of mixed-integer linear programming which allows nonlinear convex constraints: mixed-integer conic programming. Disjunctive inequalities, introduced by Balas in the context of mixed-integer linear programming in the 1970s, have been a principal ingredient in the practical success of mixed-integer programming in the last two decades. In order to extend our understanding of disjunctive inequalities to mixed-integer conic programming, we pursue a principled study of two-term disjunctions on conic sets. In our fourth contribution, we consider two-term disjunctions on a general regular cone. A result of Kılınç-Karzan indicates that conic minimal valid linear inequalities are all that is needed for a closed convex hull description of such sets. First we characterize the structure of conic minimal and tight valid linear inequalities for the disjunction. Then we develop structured nonlinear valid inequalities for the disjunction by grouping subsets of valid linear inequalities. We analyze the structure of these inequalities and identify conditions which guarantee that a single such inequality characterizes the closed convex hull of the disjunction. In our fifth and sixth contributions, we extend our earlier results to the cases where the regular cone under consideration is a direct product of second order cones and nonnegative rays and where it is the positive semidefinite cone. Disjunctions on these cones deserve special attention because they provide fundamental relaxations for mixed-integer second-order cone and mixed-integer semidefinite programs. We identify conditions under which our valid convex inequalities can be expressed in computationally tractable forms and present techniques to generate low-complexity relaxations when these conditions are not satisfied. In our final contribution, we provide closed convex hull descriptions for homogeneous two-term disjunctions on the second-order cone and general two-term disjunctions on affine cross-sections of the second-order cone. Our results yield strong convex disjunctive inequalities which can be used as cutting-surfaces in generic mixed-integer conic programming solvers.

Interior Point Cutting Plane Methods in Integer Programming

This thesis presents novel approaches that use interior point concepts in solving mixed integer programs. Particularly, we use the analytic center cutting plane method to improve three of the main components of the branch-and-bound algorithm: cutting planes, heuristics, and branching. First, we present an interior point branch-and-cut algorithm for structured integer programs based on Benders decomposition. We explore using Benders decomposition in a branch-and-cut framework where the Benders cuts are generated using the analytic center cutting plane method. The algorithm is tested on two classes of problems: the capacitated facility location problem and the multicommodity capacitated fixed charge network design problem. For the capacitated facility location problem, the proposed approach was on average 2.5 times faster than Benders-branch-and-cut and 11 times faster than classical Benders decomposition. For the multicommodity capacitated fixed charge network design problem, the proposed approach was 4 times faster than Benders-branch-and-cut while classical Benders decomposition failed to solve the majority of the tested instances. Second, we present a heuristic algorithm for mixed integer programs based on interior points. As integer solutions are typically in the interior, we use the analytic center cutting plane method to search for integer feasible points within the interior of the feasible set. The algorithm searches along two line segments that connect the weighted analytic center and two extreme points of the linear programming relaxation. Candidate points are rounded and tested for feasibility. Cuts aimed to improve the objective function and restore feasibility are then added to displace the weighted analytic center until a feasible integer solution is found. The algorithm is composed of three phases. In the first, points along the two line segments are rounded gradually to find integer feasible solutions. Then in an attempt to improve the quality of the solutions, the cut related to the bound constraint is updated and a new weighted analytic center is found. Upon failing to find a feasible integer solution, a second phase is started where cuts related to the violated feasibility constraints are added. As a last resort, the algorithm solves a minimum distance problem in a third phase. For all the tested instances, the algorithm finds good quality feasible solutions in the first two phases and the third phase is never called. Finally, we present a new approach to generate good general branching constraints based on the shape of the polyhedron. Our approach is based on approximating the polyhedron using an inscribed ellipsoid. We use Dikin's ellipsoid which we calculate using the analytic center. We propose to use the disjunction that has a minimum width on the ellipsoid. We use the fact that the width of the ellipsoid in a given direction has a closed form solution in order to formulate a quadratic problem whose optimal solution is a thin direction of the ellipsoid. While solving a quadratic problem at each node of the branch-and-bound tree is impractical, we use a local search heuristic for its solution. Computational testing conducted on hard integer problems from MIPLIB and CORAL showed that the proposed approach outperforms classical branching.

Generating cutting planes through inequality merging for integer programming problems

Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering / Todd Easton / Integer Programming (IP) problems are a common type of optimization problem used to solve numerous real world problems. IPs can require exponential computational effort to solve using the branch and bound technique. A popular method to improve solution times is to generate valid inequalities that serve as cutting planes. This dissertation introduces a new category of cutting planes for general IPs called inequality merging. The inequality merging technique combines two or more low dimensional inequalities, yielding valid inequalities of potentially higher dimension. The dissertation describes several theoretical results of merged inequalities. This research applies merging inequalities to a frequently used class of IPs called multiple knapsack (MK) problems. Theoretical results related to merging cover inequalities are presented. These results include: conditions for validity, conditions for facet defining inequalities, merging simultaneously over multiple cover inequalities, sequentially merging several cover inequalities on multiple variables, and algorithms that facilitate the development of merged inequalities. Examples demonstrate each of the theoretical discoveries. A computational study experiments with inequality merging techniques using benchmark MK instances. This computational study provides recommendations for implementing merged inequalities, which results in an average decrease of about 9% in computational time for both small and large MK instances. The research validates the effectiveness of using merged inequalities for MK problems and motivates substantial theoretical and computational extensions as future research.

A new polyhedral approach to combinatorial designs

We consider combinatorial t-design problems as discrete optimization problems. Our motivation is that only a few studies have been done on the use of exact optimization techniques in designs, and that classical methods in design theory have still left many open existence questions. Roughly defined, t-designs are pairs of discrete sets that are related following some strict properties of size, balance, and replication. These highly structured relationships provide optimal solutions to a variety of problems in computer science like error-correcting codes, secure communications, network interconnection, design of hardware; and are applicable to other areas like statistics, scheduling, games, among others. We give a new approach to combinatorial t-designs that is useful in constructing t-designs by polyhedral methods. The first contribution of our work is a new result of equivalence of t-design problems with a graph theory problem. This equivalence leads to a novel integer programming formulation for t-designs, which we call GDP. We analyze the polyhedral properties of GDP and conclude, among other results, the associated polyhedron dimension. We generate new classes of valid inequalities to aim at approximating this integer program by a linear program that has the same optimal solution. Some new classes of valid inequalities are generated as Chv´atal-Gomory cuts, other classes are generated by graph complements and combinatorial arguments, and others are generated by the use of incidence substructures in a t-design. In particular, we found a class of valid inequalities that we call stable-set class that represents an alternative graph equivalence for the problem of finding a t-design. We analyze and give results on the strength of these new classes of valid inequalities. We propose a separation problem and give its integer programming formulation as a maximum (or minimum) edge-weight biclique subgraph problem. We implement a pure cutting-plane algorithm using one of the stronger classes of valid inequalities derived. Several instances of t-designs were solved efficiently by this algorithm at the root node of the search tree. Also, we implement a branch-and-cut algorithm and solve several instances of 2-designs trying different base formulations. Computational results are included.

Mixed integer bilinear programming with applications to the pooling problem

Solution methodologies for mixed integer bilinear problems (MIBLP) are studied in this dissertation. This problem class is motivated using the pooling problem, a multicommodity network flow problem that typically arises in chemical engineering applications. Stronger than previously known results are provided to compare the strengths of polyhedral relaxations of the pooling problem. A novel single node flow relaxation, defined by a bilinear equality constraint and flow balance, is proposed for the pooling problem. Linear valid inequalities in the original space of variables are derived using a well-known technique called lifting. Mixed integer linear (MILP) formulations are proposed for generating feasible solutions to the pooling problem. Some of these MILP models arise from variable discretizations while others possess a network flow interpretation. The effectiveness of these MILP models is empirically validated on a library of medium and large-scale instances. General MIBLPs, not necessarily pooling problems, are solved using extended MILP reformulations. The reformulation is obtained by writing binary representation for each general integer variable. Facet-defining inequalities are provided for the reformulation of each bilinear term. New valid inequalities are also proposed for bilinear terms with a nontrivial upper bound. The proposed reformulation and cutting planes are compared against a global solver on five different classes of MIBLPs.

On Linear Programming, Integer Programming and Cutting Planes

In this thesis we address three related topic in the field of Operations Research. Firstly we discuss the problems and limitation of most common solvers for linear programming, precision. We then present a solver that generate rational optimal solutions to linear programming problems by solving a succession of (increasingly more precise) floating point approximations of the original rational problem until the rational optimality conditions are achieved. This method is shown to be (on average) only 20% slower than the common pure floating point approach, while returning true optimal solutions to the problems. Secondly we present an extension of the Local Cut procedure introduced by Applegate et al, 2001, for the Symmetric Traveling Salesman Problem (STSP), to the general setting of MIP problems. This extension also proves finiteness of the separation, facet and tilting procedures in the general MIP setting, and also provides conditions under which the separation procedure is guaranteed to generate cuts that separate the current fractional solution from the convex hull of the mixed-integer polyhedron. We then move on to explore some configurations for local cuts, realizing extensive testing on the instances from MIPLIB. Those results show that this technique may be useful in general MIP problems, while the experience of Applegate et al, shows that the ideas can be successfully applied to structures problems as well. Thirdly we present an extensive computational experiment on the TSP and Domino Parity inequalities as introduced by Letchford, 2000. This work also include a safe-shrinking theorem for domino parity inequalities, heuristics to apply the planar separation algorithm introduced by Letchford to instances where the planarity requirement does not hold, and several practical speed-ups. Our computational experience showed that this class of inequalities effectively improve the lower bounds from the best relaxations obtained with Concorde, which is one of the state of the art solvers for the STSP. As part of these experience, we solved to optimality the (up to now) largest two STSP instances, both of them belong to the TSPLIB set of instances and they have 18,520 and 33,810 cities respectively.
