Humanity, hybridism and liminality in Tommaso Landolfi (1939-1950)

This thesis analyzes the three texts forming the so-called „Fantastic trilogy‟ by Tommaso Landolfi: La pietra lunare (1939), Racconto d’autunno (1947) and Cancroregina (1950), in the light of the cultural and historical environment in which they were produced. I argue that these novellas incorporate and obliquely problematize specific tensions of the period running from Racial Laws (1938) and the Pact of Steel (1939) to post-war reconstruction. Building on recent scholarship on the subversive role of the Fantastic, the study provides a more comprehensive view of Landolfi‟s early production and challenges accepted views on his Fantastic as exclusively ironical, intellectual and free-play. This thesis also investigates the sources through which Landolfi delineates this oblique form of socio-political critique. Whereas scholarship in the past has widely recognized that Landolfi draws inspiration from nineteenth-century French, Russian and German classics in the genre of Gothic and Fantastic fiction, this contribution draws attention to the way Landolfi negotiates this traditional repertoire through input from both Italy‟s „high‟ literary tradition (Dante, Leopardi, Manzoni, D‟Annunzio), Italian folklore and other non-literary sources (i.e. occultism and psychiatry). This thesis considers Landolfi‟s work from fresh angles, applying recent Anglophone theoretical frameworks (including theories on post-humanism, on the subversive role of the Fantastic and political readings of Gothic fiction) to his writing and probing his portrayals of dynamics and tensions that continue to challenge us today. Additionally, it makes use of the anthropological notion of „liminality‟ to underline the intrinsic thematic, textual and narrative ambiguity of the three novellas. I claim that the texts‟ liminality – involving slippery entities, settings, situations and narrative modalities that do not fit any precise category – voices the cultural and political instability of the decade under analysis. The study makes a deeper, and more nuanced, contribution to the literature on Landolfi, reflecting upon the author‟s strategies for problematizing contemporary historical and cultural issues by means of a fiction only apparently detached from reality.

The New World mythology in Italian epic poetry, 1492-1650

My thesis explores the construction of the New World mythology as it appears in early modern Italian epic poems. It focuses on how Italian writers engage with and contribute to this process of myth-creation; how the newly created mythology relates to the political, social and cultural context of the time; and investigates extent to which it was affected by the personal agendas of the poets. By analysing three New World myths (Brazilian Amazons, Patagonian giants and Canadian pygmies), it provides insights into the perception that Italians had of the newly discovered lands in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, as well as providing a greater understanding of the role that early modern Italy had in the ‘invention’ of the Americas. Italian epic poets domesticated New World myths for their own purposes, using written, visual and material sources as an anchor for their agendas. The study of these myths changes, in some cases completely, our reading of the poems. New World myths are at once an exercise in ekphrasis of the maps, cartouches, engravings and collectible objects they derived from, and a record of the impact the Americas had on the early modern Italians.

Italy through the mirror of translation : place, culture and difference in the twenty-first century book market

This thesis asks how stereotypical images of a foreign country are reinforced or contested through translation in the context of the contemporary consumer book market. Taking Italy and the British publishing market as its focus, it sets out to examine the translation process for one popular genre of Italian fiction and two Italian bestsellers published in Britain after 2000. Gomorra by Roberto Saviano (2006) and Cento colpi di spazzola prima di andare a dormire by Melissa P. (2003) and the so-called ‘new Italian crime fiction’, are three recent Italian publishing phenomena that have been selected for translation into English. Once translated and distributed in the British market, they attracted significant commercial and critical attention in the literary field. How important was the association with stereotypical images of Italy in determining the success of these texts in Britain, a market that is famously resistant to translation? How was the idea of Italy re-negotiated and re-imagined throughout the translation process? In order to provide an answer to the above questions, both the translation and the paratranslation of the Italian texts are investigated. The translation of new Italian crime fiction is examined with a focus on the Italian and the British history of the genre and on its paratranslation. The fascinating implications of the new branding of the author Roberto Saviano, which emerged in the British literary field when Gomorra was translated into English, are explored in the context of both translation and paratranslation. Finally, in analysing the translation of Cento colpi I have focused on the work of the translator, Lawrence Venuti, and particularly on the implicationsthat his ideology of translation has on the idea of Italy and on that of “cultural difference” as they emerge from the target text. This thesis adopts an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, in which theoretical understandings from Translation Studies, Italian Studies, studies of the contemporary book market and media culture are integrated. It uses translation as a method to look into the workings of the contemporary book market and, more generally, to shed light on contemporary representations of Italy that circulate in the large mass mediated textual space through the mirror of translation.
