The research covered quite a bit of territory with the simple objective - to 'break free' of the 'risk' of continuing architectural patterns in practice through and beyond mid career. On reflection I identified four stages within the history of my practice covering three disciplines; art, architecture and the political economies relation with urban geography. I was hoping to tie these together in a more coherent way and write reflectively to deepen those relations. I declined practicing architecture (late 2003-2006), inflamed an old love affair with 'fine art' and curated sound-art events, designed art-theatre-performance works and installations, continued free-prose writings and visited specific Australian and aboriginal (continent) places and adjacent world destinations. I consolidated the 'art studio' within and returned to architectural practice by 2007. The dissertation about this 'episode of behavior' galvanised many insights into time and the illusive and expansive nature of deep-space. And engaged understanding death in an unusual and liberating way, which ran an exponential affirmation through and beyond life as we know it. Though abstract, these thoughts (and journeys) began to mould ideas for projects within an understood 'complexity'. This assisted my desire for 'the simplicity of elegance' - in everything, and specifically fortified arguments for a multivalent kind of architecture.

In developmental toxicity studies, multiple levels of correlation exist between multiple outcomes of interest, complicating the estimation of models and risk assessment for data collected from these studies. The first chapter describes these multiple layers of correlation, the problems that arise from them, and provides a detailed literature review of the statistical methodology developed in order to address these problems.

This thesis examines the aesthetic of ballets adapted for BBC Television by producer Margaret Dale, beginning with her entrance to the BBC's training program in 1955 and culminating with her commissioned work Houseparty, which aired in 1964. A historical and organizational framework is discussed regarding the BBC's cultural mission and view of arts programming, as well as general developmental milestones in programming contextualizing Dale's working conditions. Particular focus is placed upon the appropriation of Romantic narrative ballets and their significance in reinforcing an aristocratic and culturally divisive structure in the arts. Textual analyses consider issues of restaging, camera placement, and lighting, as well as television's intimacy and relationship to characterization in ballet narratives.

In the mid 1920's Muncie, Indiana, was exposed to the penetrating scrutiny of Robert S. Lynd and Helen M. Lynd, which resulted in the sociological treatise, Middletown. In the mid 1930's the sociological team once again descended upon "Middletown" to see what, if any, changes had taken place in the intervening ten years. The results of this survey were embodied in an equally famous treatise, Middletown In Transition. Figuring prominently in both surveys was George R. Dale, the crusading editor of the Muncie Post-Democrat of Middletown and the controversial mayor-editor of Muncie in Middletown In Transition.The purpose of this study is to present the story of Dale's battle with political corruption, Klan bigotry, and most of all, his fight for freedom of speech and a free press. The copies of the Muncie Post-Democrat and other pertinent sources which the writer deemed necessary for a proper evaluation of the study have been utilized.

TITLE: MANAGING THE MAGIC: TECHNICAL DIRECTION OF THE SECRET GARDEN MAJOR PROFESSOR: Robert Holcombe This project, Managing the Magic: Technical Direction of The Secret Garden, is a detailed description of the process I used as the technical director to help produce the Department of Theater's production of The Secret Garden at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in April 2009. This work is also a study of the artistic collaboration that took place between the design team and me during the execution of the production. Through this project I was able to polish skills that I had learned through careful goal setting and evaluation. Working on The Secret Garden also gave me the opportunity to broaden my experience and develop my strengths as a technical director.

The problem of 'authority' is of paramount importance in determining the theological stance of any religious movement and not least is this the case where the movement is labelled 'fundamentalist' both by its protagonists and its antagonists. Intro. p. 1.

Every summer, Lily Dale, New York, a community founded on spiritualist beliefs and steeped in an eccentric explosive past, hosts thousands of visitors seeking to communicate with dead friends and relatives, while the residents lead ordinary lives in the midst of the supernatural hype permeating their town. Their stories are considered by most to be secondary to the illustrious trappings of the community in which they occurred. My research employs oral histories prompted by personal photographs to showcase the residents' everyday experiences amidst the town's infamy, illuminating the undervalued individual experience of those living in communities of such extraordinary repute. The attitudes of the residents displayed when sharing their memories is contextualized in the material behavior exhibited historically in the Spiritualist religion, spirit photography, and the formative years of Lily Dale's growth from a summer camp in the late 1800s to a town of permanent yearlong residents practicing unorthodox beliefs. Through the residents' sharing of images and memories, they reveal that their "ordinary" lives include a deep-rooted understanding of the Spiritualist lifestyle by unconsciously weaving spirit encounters and metaphysical events in and out of their conversation without making distinctions that they are in any way unusual. Spirit is not only in the air in Lily Dale--to the residents it is the air.
