Mechanized harvesting of sugarcane is the main method of harvesting in Brazilian producing regions. With the increasing use of this method, it is necessary to verify the quality of the operation developed with the intention of mitigating its impacts on sugarcane fields. The objective with this work was to evaluate the wear of the basal cutting knives by means of the loss of area and increase of the thickness of the cutting wire, taking into account the energy spent by the cutting knives during the cutting action and verify the quality of the harvesting process during the evolution of the wear of the basal cutting knives, using as indicators of quality the damages and shakes to the ratoons at the beginning and the end of the turns of operation. The design was completely randomized to verify the wear parameters of the knives (loss of mass, loss of area, increase of shear thickness and energy demand to make the cut), indicators of damage quality and hamstrings were evaluated following the premises of statistical process control, in which data were collected according to time. The wear of the knives was significant for all evaluated parameters, being the loss of mass, loss of area and increase of the shear thickness significant throughout the shifts. The energy demand was lower when the knife was in the new condition, as well as the damages and shakes to the rattles were smaller when the knife has bigger mass.
