AN INTELLIGENT MANAGER FOR A DISTRIBUTED TELEMETRY SYSTEM

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1993 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / A number of efforts at NASA's Johnson Space Center are exploring ways of improving operational efficiency and effectiveness of telemetry data distribution. An important component of this is the Real-Time Data System project in the Shuttle Mission Control Center. This project's telemetry system is based on a network of engineering workstations that acquire, distribute, analyze, and display the data. Telemetry data is acquired and partially processed through a commercial programmable telemetry processor. The data is then transferred into workstations where the remaining decommutation, conversion and calibration steps are performed. The results are sent over the network to applications operating within end user workstations. This complex distributed environment is managed by PILOT, an intelligent system that monitors data flow and process integrity with the goal of providing a very high level of availability requiring minimal human involvement. PILOT is a rule-based expert system that oversees the operation of the system. It interacts with agents that operate in the local environment of each workstation and advises the local agents of system status and configuration. This enables each local agent to manage its local environment and provides a resource to which it can come with issues that need a global view for resolution. PILOT is implemented using a commercially available real-time expert system shell and operates in a heterogeneous set of hardware platforms.

IMACCS: A Progress Report on NASA/GSFC's COTS-Based Ground Data Systems, and Their Extension into New Domains

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 28-31, 1996 / Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California / The Integrated Monitoring, Analysis, and Control COTS System (IMACCS), a system providing real time satellite command and telemetry support, orbit and attitude determination, events prediction, and data trending, was implemented in 90 days at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in 1995. This paper describes upgrades made to the original commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS)-based prototype. These upgrades include automation capability and spacecraft Integration and Testing (I&T) capability. A further extension to the prototype is the establishment of a direct RF interface to a spacecraft. As with the original prototype, all of these enhancements required lower staffing levels and reduced schedules compared to custom system development approaches. The team's approach to system development, including taking advantage of COTS and legacy software, is also described.

Advanced Data Acquisition and Processing System (ADAPS) – The Current State of the System

Past papers have delineated the concepts brought to bear in the design and implementation of the AFFTC’s latest generation of telemetry data systems in the Advanced Data Acquisition and Processing System (ADAPS) program. The current deployed system incorporates the planned approach of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) and government-off-the-shelf (GOTS) elements as basic to the system solution. The state of the program has advanced through full development, delivery and performance testing. The system is currently deployed in support of flight testing at Edwards AFB. This paper will present the status of the program.

The objective is to maintain and ensure error-free payload commanding and data acquisition as well as efficient processing of the payload data for concurrent, real time and future use. While Mainframe computing still comprises a majority of commercially available communication and data systems, a significant diversion can be noticed towards utilizing a distributed network of workstations and commercially available software and hardware. This motivation reflects advances in modem computer technology and the trend in space mission control today and in the future. The development of communication and data involves the implementation of distributed and parallel processing concepts in a network of highly powerful client server environments. This paper addresses major issues related to developing and integrating communication and data system and the significance for future developments.

CCSDS Data Link Service Allocation for MIL-STD-1553B Bus Architecture on Small Payloads

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 17-20, 1994 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / There has been much interest recently in the possibility of using the NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) instead of proprietary ground stations in supporting small space payload communications. These payloads operate on fairly low power and do not use the sophisticated tracking equipment standard on more complex user spacecraft. This paper is part of a feasibility study for such use of TDRSS, and focuses on the effect of the method of providing the Grade-2 data link layer services specified in Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) Advanced Orbiting Systems (AOS) recommendations upon a hypothetical spacecraft using a MIL-STD-1553B polled data bus as the backbone of its onboard LAN. In particular, one case in which the 1553B bus controller, assumed to be some Intel 80X86 microprocessor, provides all CCSDS services will be contrasted with another where these services are split between the bus controller and a device which interfaces between the spacecraft LAN and the TDRSS Return Service spacelink. The comparison will be made for a 15 orbit/day scenario using a small helical antenna with a comparatively wide beamwidth. The main performance criteria considered here are end-to-end data throughput and expected delays, along with required buffer sizes for the LAN. Also, it may be noted that the data rate of the TDRSS return link and the size of the sliding window used for flow and error control will have a large impact on the required values for the chosen criteria, and so choices for these parameters significantly affect the outcome of any system service comparison. The two LAN types will be modeled and analyzed using NETWORK II.5. This simulator allows tracking of the number of packets read into LAN memories and sent down from the payload to ground via TDRSS, as well as accurately modeling the delays involved with data processing and transmission over the link.

Open Archival Information System (OAIS) as a data curation standard in the World Data Centre

Collaboration in e- science is important as scientists, engineers and technologists work together to solve scientific problems, through the collection and analysis of large data sets. These experiments can generate enormous amounts of data, creating a need for more efficient storage, management and processing of data. Data needs to be managed effectively to ensure possible future use for secondary analysis and further experimentation. The practice of data curation deals with the management of data, with the objective of sustaining data as a resource for future use. A number of frameworks and models have been developed to address the curation of data, but only the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) has been accepted internationally. The World Data Centre (WDC) is an organisation that was established to ensure access to scientific data for a number of different scientific disciplines. This organisation consists of 52 individual data centres (iWDCs) that are members of the WDC, and are responsible for the curation of scientific data. Because the data curation practices and needs of each iWDC differ, the purpose of this study is to determine to what extent it is possible to develop a framework for the curation of data in the WDC. This study used a mixed method research design through the collection of data from an online survey (quantitative data) and a multiple-case case study (qualitative data). All the iWDCs were invited to participate in the online survey, which was created to quantify OAIS functional model compatibility, sampling for the case study was conducted based on the OAIS functional model compatibility scores. v Based on the findings from this study, suggestions towards a suitable framework for the curation of data in the WDC are made. The key outcomes from this research included a quantitative OAIS functional model compatibility test and suggestions towards a suitable framework for the curation of data. The suggestions towards a suitable framework for the curation of data in the WDC should in future be tested in the newly formed World Data System (WDS) and adjustments made to create a viable framework for curating data in the WDS.

Decision Making in Manufacturing Systems: An Integrated Throughput, Quality and Maintenance Model Using HMM

<p>The decision making processes in today's manufacturing systems represent very complex and challenging tasks. The desired flexibility in terms of the functionality of a machine adds more components to the machine. The real time monitoring and reporting generates large streams of data. However the intelligent and real time processing of this large collection of system data is at the core of the manufacturing decision support tools. </p> <p>This thesis outlines the use of Frequent Episodes in Event Sequences and Hidden Markov Modeling of throughput, quality and maintenance data to model the deterioration of performance in the components that make up the manufacturing system. The thesis also introduces the concept of decision points and outlines how to integrate the total cost function in a business model. </p> This thesis deals with the following three topics: <p>First, the component-based data structure of the manufacturing system is outlined especially throughput, quality and maintenance data. In this approach, the manufacturing system is considered as a group of components that interact with each other and with raw materials to produce the manufactured product. This interaction creates a considerable amount of data which can be associated with the relevant components of the system. The relations between the manufacturing components are established on a physical and logical basis. The components properties are clearly defined in database tables specifically created for this application. The thesis also discusses the web services in manufacturing systems and the portable technologies used in plant decision support tools. </p> <p>Second, the thesis presents a novel application of Frequent Episodes in Event Sequences to identify patterns in the deterioration of performance in a component using frequent episodes of operational failures, quality failures and maintenance activities. A Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is used to model each deterioration episode to estimate the states of performance and the transition rates between the states. The thesis compares the results generated by this model to other existing models of component performance deterioration while emphasizing the benefits ofthe proposed model through the use of the plant data.</p> <p>Finally the thesis presents a methodology usmg HMM probability distributions and Bayesian Decision theory framework to provide a set of decisions and recommendations under the condition of data uncertainty. The results of this analysis are then integrated in the plant maintenance business model.</p> <p>It is worthwhile mentioning that to develop the techniques and validate the results in this research; a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) was developed to operate in an automotive engine plant. All the data and results in this research are based on the plant data.
