This dissertation is intended to demonstrate the presence of a contemporary gnostic spirit in the novels of Robertson Davies. / The dominance of Protestant puritanism in English Canadian culture is a frequent theme in the literature of the nation. In his writing, Robertson Davies counters the repressive dynamics of a society shaped by puritanism with an appeal to an alternate vision. This vision, which places greater value on self-knowledge, bears a strong affinity to the precepts of the ancient gnostics. / Davies' critique of an English Canadian context which appears to place higher value on morality than on spiritual adventures can be compared to the gnostic rejection of the material world in favour of knowledge of the inner self in relation to the divine. / The commitment to gnosis as a means of escape from a repressive environment to one of spiritual freedom is another mark of the connection between Davies' novels and the gnostic spirit. / The presence of revealer figures who initiate their hearers into the way of gnosis is found in both the writings of the ancient gnostics and in the novels of Robertson Davies. / Davies' treatment of the concepts of dualism, the nature of evil and human destiny bears a closer relationship to the ideas found in gnostic literature than to the doctrines of Judeo-Christian orthodoxy. / Finally, Davies' emphasis on the importance of the individual in the quest for self-knowledge reflects a gnostic suspicion of communal values. / The identification of the relationship between Davies' writing and the spirit of gnosticism provides a good case study of the way in which theological notions influence and are influenced by a particular cultural context.

Preparo e caracterização de um candidato a material de referência de siliceto de urânio - U3Si2 / Preparation and characterization of a candidate for uranium silicide reference material - U3Si2Santana, Luciana Vieira de 29 July 2019 (has links)
De acordo com a Norma CNEN-NN-2.02,1999, as instalações nucleares brasileiras devem usar sistemas de medição que permitem a determinação de seus inventários de materiais nucleares e também avaliar e verificar a qualidade de seus sistemas de medição por meio da participação dos laboratórios envolvidos em programas de intercomparação, além do uso de materiais de referência e materiais de referências certificado. Neste contexto, este estudo relata os esforços para assegurar o preparo e caracterização do primeiro material de referência para matriz de siliceto de urânio que visa garantir a qualidade do combustível nuclear produzido no Brasil. Foram investigados os teores de urânio, silício e impurezas em 8 amostras analisadas em triplicata para o estudo de homogeneidade e 12 amostras para o estudo de estabilidade. Foi utilizada a análise de variância para fornecer informações sobre a variabilidade em massa e o grau de não homogeneidade. A caracterização do material se deu por meio de um estudo comparativo entre 3 laboratórios independentes. A caracterização do material nuclear foi realizada aplicando a titulação potenciométrica por \"Davies & Gray/NBL\" para a determinação das concentrações de urânio, e a determinação gravimétrica para as concentrações de silício, métodos recomendados pela Agencia Internacional de Energia Atômica. O teor de impurezas foi determinado por espectrometria de emissão com fonte de plasma induzido (ICPOES), após separação previa da matriz. Comparativamente, foi aplicada a técnica de fluorescência de raios X com energia dispersiva (WDXRF). Foram considerados como valores certificados aqueles cujos resultados de concentração foram obtidos com incertezas expandidas relativas inferiores a 20 %. Esse limite foi escolhido como o adequado para o uso pretendido para o material de referência e para a determinação dos elementos na matriz nas condições desse estudo. / According to CNEN-NN-2.02.1999, Brazilian nuclear facilities must use measurement systems that allow the determination of their nuclear material inventories and also evaluate and verify the quality of their measurement systems through the participation of laboratories. Involved in intercomparison programs, in addition to the use of reference materials and certified reference materials. In this context, this study reports the efforts to ensure the preparation and characterization of the first reference material for uranium silicate matrix that aims to guarantee the quality of nuclear fuel produced in Brazil. Uranium, silicon and impurities contents were investigated in 8 samples analyzed in triplicate for the homogeneity study and 12 samples for the stability study. Variance analysis was used to provide information on mass variability and degree of inhomogeneity. The characterization of the material was made through a comparative study between 3 independent laboratories. The characterization of nuclear material was performed by applying potentiometric titration by \"Davies & Gray / NBL\" for determination of uranium concentrations and gravimetric determination for silicon concentrations, methods recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The impurity content was determined by induced plasma source emission spectrometry (ICPOES) after prior matrix separation. By comparison, the energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) technique was applied. Certified values were those whose concentration results were obtained with relative expanded uncertainties of less than 20%. This limit was chosen as appropriate for the intended use of the reference material and for the determination of elements in the matrix under the conditions of this study.

The use of parody in Peter Maxwell Davies' Taverner and related works.Pilkington, Shirley Anne. January 1990 (has links)
Parody is a concept central to much of the work of Peter
Maxwell Davies. In this study the First Fantasia on an In
Nomine by John Taverner, the Seven In Nomine, the Second
Fantasia on an In Nomine by John Taverner and the opera
Taverner are used as case studies of Davies' use of parody.
Three categories of parody are discerned: parody in its pre-Baroque
sense which entails the use of musical material from
pre-existing compositions; parody in its modern sense whereby
a particular work or style is imitated in such a manner that
the source is ridiculed or satirized; and the non-satirical
parody of compositional devices, forms or other features
characteristic of a particular musical period.
All four works examined in this study use the 'In nomine' by
the sixteenth-century composer John Taverner as a source of
pre-compositional musical material. Each of Davies' In
Nomine works is examined in detail and the composer's use of
the device and its function in each instance is discussed.
The chronological consideration of the In Nomine
compositions, and of Taverner in particular, reveals a
gradual change in the manner in which Davies employed parody
in his compositions. Attention is thus given to the
transition from the emphasis on parody in the Renaissance
sense to the emphasis on parody in its modern sense and it is
shown. that this transition clearly parallels the change that
was taking place within Davies' general compositional style
during the sixties.
In conclusion, some reasons for the predominant role played
by parody in Davies' output and the preoccupation with
musical materials derived from the pre-Baroque are suggested,
in order to show the relevance of Davies' use of parody

The changing role of the Church of England through the use of its community buildings : Newham 1945-2010Brown, John January 2014 (has links)
This thesis seeks to re-examine theories of religious decline in the inner-city. From Edward Wickham (Church and People in an Industrial City) to Callum Brown (The Death of Christian Britain), decline and death have defined inner-city Christianity. In the late twentieth century the Church of England in Newham began a process of renewal by creating combined churches and community centres in a number of its parishes. Examining the motivation behind these projects creates a more nuanced understanding of the present secularization debate. Four churches were chosen that underwent this process to reflect the diversity and complexity of this approach. This work draws on minutes, reports, newspapers, interviews and oral histories. This is a study of how one area of East London renewed itself, inspired by the theological approach of J. G. Davies and his followers. Far from discovering the Church in its death knell, evidence emerges of an energetic, highly motivated Christian community, able to draw funds and expertise into this process of renewal. The Church of England is still willing to reassert its mission to the inner-city and expand its sphere of influence to encompass communal activities in a process of reclaiming a role within Newham life. The Anglican Church has defied notions of decline and secularization, and this study reveals an inner-city part of London that has a thriving religious culture. The renewal of its buildings has enabled the church to carve a role out within the community that ensure it remains positive, financially stable and numerically more resilient that its suburban neighbours. This suggests that the predictions of the death of Christian Britain are premature in this instant and arguments about decline have to be further evaluated in the light of this study.
