Studium oscilací neutrin v experimentu NOvA / Study of neutrino oscillations at the NOvA experiment

Nosek, Tomáš January 2021 (has links)
NOvA is a two detector long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment using Fermilab's 700 kW NuMI neutrino beam. It studies the disappearance of muon (anti)neutrinos and the appearance of electron (anti)neutrinos in the beam over a distance of 810 km be- tween the detectors. This thesis presents the latest 2020 update of the NOvA neutrino oscillation analysis within the standard model of three neutrinos mixing. With about +50% new data in NuMI neutrino mode (+22% of the total available data) and nu- merous analysis upgrades compared to the previously reported results, the experiment has made over 4σ-significant observation of electron antineutrino appearance in muon antineutrino beam and constrained the oscillation parameters |∆m2 32|, sin2 θ23 and δCP. The text closely depicts the analysis and all its novelties and changes. A detailed inspec- tion is dedicated to the systematic uncertainties and their estimation and validation. Although statistical uncertainties currently dominate in these measurements, under- standing the major sources of systematic uncertainties and their correlations is vital for both the interpretation and precision of the results and for further improvements of the analysis. 1

Studium parametrů oscilací neutrin v experimentu NOvA / Studium parametrů oscilací neutrin v experimentu NOvA

Nosek, Tomáš January 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims at the neutrino oscillations phenomena and the role of longbaseline neutrino oscillation experiments and NOνA in particular in oscillation parameters search. The standard formalism of 3 neutrinos model is described, NOνA experiment and its main features and physics goals (mixing angles θ13 and θ23, CP violation, the value of the CP phase δ and mass hierarchy determination) are introduced. The effects of media to neutrino propagation are explained and effective matter oscillation parameters are derived. The way to resolve the mass hierarchy exploiting matter effects in long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments is depicted and consequent problems regarding the recent knowledge of oscillation parameters, i.e. δ-, θ13- and θ23-degeneracies, are discussed. In the last part GLoBES software is used to simulate NOνA results and to compute the estimated sensitivities to the mass hierarchy in case of 3 years ν run and 1.5ν+1.5ν years run in order to show the advantage of an earlier switch to antineutrino mode in mass hierarchy determination.

Readings from a life : rural educators read our rural selves / Readings from a life

Kelly, Tony Nelson. January 2008 (has links)
Readings from a Life: Rural Educators Read our Rural Selves is a cultural study of identity in place in Atlantic Canada. The study is developed based on hybrid methodology drawing on key elements of literary anthropology, self-study, autobiography, auto-ethnography, and geo-poetics. The literary landscape of rural Nova Scotia provides the principal site for the readings which are developed throughout in contrapuntal fashion, that is to say the readings move back and forth between global and local representations of rural space. Key to the development of each of the chapters is the concept of distance as a device for making the world strange and therefore knowable. The readings are contained within seven chapters based on the research question, 'What are you doing here?' This question is deconstructed first through establishing the literary landscape of rural Nova Scotia as a site for analysis, followed by a discussion of literary anthropology as method, which leads in turn to a close examination of how particular teachers read themselves through their engagement with the literary texts. These readings are followed by a critical examination of what kinds of reading count in official policy discourses when compared to the more literary representations. As self-study the readings are used to provide insight into a life lived for the most part in rural Nova Scotia and at the same time are used to highlight aspects of education and teacher identity in this place. The concluding chapter moves recursively in order to strengthen the insights contained in the previous chapters and at the same time articulates the ambivalent nature of the project as a whole. Policy implications, potential beneficiaries, limitations of the study, and future directions are indicated in the final chapter.

The Association of Traditional, Non-Traditional, HIV, and Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy-Related Risk Factors and Dyslipidemia Among People who are Living with HIV in Nova Scotia: A Longitudinal Cohort Study

Walker, Kirsten 27 October 2010 (has links)
The present study investigated the longitudinal relationships between traditional, non-traditional, HIV and HAART-related risk factors and dyslipidemia in people who are living with HIV living in Nova Scotia. A total of 303 men and 39 women who were patients of the Halifax HIV clinic with at least two measurements of: total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein- cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein- cholesterol (HDL-C) or triglyceride concentration, taken between 1997 and 2009 were included in this study. Univariate repeated measures linear mixed effects regression models were developed for men and women separately and multivariate models were developed for men. BMI, produced a significant independent effect on total cholesterol to HDL-C ratio in men living with HIV. Hepatitis C co-infection, a history of injection drug use, and viral load (copies HIV RNA/ ml blood), all found to produce significant independent effects on HDL-C concentration among men living with HIV.
