Morris & Co. as a theoretical model for contemporary South African craft enterprises.

Stevens, Ingrid Elise. January 2007 (has links)
Thesis (DTech. degree in Fine Art) / The thesis looks at successful craft enterprises, their activities and actions that account for their success, in order to make recommendations that could be useful to similar enterprises in future. To approach and examine five contemporary South African craft enterprises, selected on the basis of criteria established to define a successful craft enterprise, the author developed a model based on a historical example, namely the Victorian craft business, Morris & Co. This model details the many aspects pertaining to design practices, business practices and labour systems that are necessary for the success of such an undertaking. The model was then used both to gather data and to analyze the data from the five South African case studies.
