Effect of low dietary zinc supply during pregnancy and lactation on the sow and the neonatal pigletKalinowski, Juan. January 1985 (has links)
Experiments were conducted with sows and littermate-gilts to investigate the effect of dietary zinc (Zn) restriction during either part or most of the pregnancy and lactation on dams and their offspring. / Reduced dietary Zn (13 ppm) during the last 4 wk of pregnancy and first 2 wk of lactation presented no serious consequences to the dam or offspring. Reduction of dietary Zn throughout pregnancy and lactation (10 ppm) caused overt signs of Zn deficiency in one-half of the gilts, however, their offspring exhibited no obvious abnormalities. Zinc restriction did not affect feed consumption but depressed plasma and urinary Zn and plasma alkaline phosphatase activity (APA). The use of the balance technique and radiotracers revealed that gilts deficient in Zn initiated protective mechanisms such as, increased Zn absorption reduced endogenous Zn excretion, prolongation of the biological half life of Zn; all these responses affected higher efficiency of Zn utilization. / Despite the protective mechanisms, gilts depleted in Zn exhibited prolonged stressful parturition and a high incidence of intrapartum and neonatal mortality than control gilts. Piglets from gilts depleted in Zn showed depressed birth weight, reduced concentrations of plasma Zn, Cu and ammonia and low APA and hematocrit, increased plasma concentrations of glucose and lactate, reduced content of Zn in liver, heart, lung, skin, bone and carcass and higher concentrations of Cu and Mn in various tissues compared to controls. Zinc depletion did not change the Zn content of colostrum but did change it in milk. Content of Cu, Fe, and Mn was effected in colostrum and milk. Weight of piglets was lower at one wk but not at two wk of age. Two-week old piglets exhibited lower Zn and higher Cu concentrations in plasma; reduced Zn and increased Cu and Mn concentrations in liver and bone and changes in Cu and Mn in other tissues. At the end of lactation, gilts depleted in Zn exhibited low level of Zn and APA in plasma; reduced Zn content in liver, spleen, heart, small intestine; increased Cu content in liver and small intestine; increased Zn and Mn content in brain. / Although gilts depleted in Zn exhibited a highly efficient handling of Zn via homeostatic mechanisms, the reduced amount of corporal exchangeable Zn in these gilts caused biochemical changes affecting the performance of the dam and the offspring. The experience of counselling for individuals with particular learning disabilitiesSamson, Piers 11 1900 (has links)
Clients with specific deficits in communication, memory, processing of information, or attention, may have difficulties with the counselling process. This study was been designed to explore the experiences of individuals with these specific deficits in counselling, and thereby increase awareness of the existence and effect of possible barriers or supports in the counselling process. The methodology used was Interpretive Description, developed by Sally Thorne (Sally Thorne, Kirkham, & O'Flynn-Magee, 2004). Ten individuals with particular learning disabilities (one or more of the above deficits) who have experienced counselling were interviewed. Up to four interviews were conducted with each participant; one screening interview, an initial interview, an optional interview including a significant other, and a member check at the end of the study. The researcher recorded a field and research journal during data collection. For the initial and optional interviews the researcher gathered transcripts, and then immersed himself in the data, in order to find themes about the participants’ experiences of counselling. The participants confirmed themes for accuracy and completeness. Finally, four participants contributed a short paragraph at the end of the thesis, nine participants contributed drawings that represented their counselling experience, and five participants created poses representing their relationship with their therapist. These alternate forms of data were used as further evidence in the study. The data gathered demonstrated that participants believed that they needed a more flexible approach to therapy which depended on having a safe relationship with a therapist that was sensitive to their needs. Although certain kinds of counselling processes were preferred by certain participants, the participants’ particular cognitive deficits were not the determining factors of what kinds of help the participants wanted in therapy. Rather, the participants were more interested in the creation of a counselling process based on a collaborative approach between them and their therapist, dependant on the participant’s knowledge about his or her needs and the therapist’s experience in counselling and with learning disabilities.

Metachromatic leukodystrophy : the role of non-pathogenic sequence variants in the causation of disease / John Steven Harvey.Harvey, John Steven January 1996 (has links)
Erratum sheet pasted on front end-paper. / Bibliography: p. 220-239. / xxi, 239 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. / Title page, contents and abstract only. The complete thesis in print form is available from the University Library. / The objectives of this project are to investigate the development of metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) in the patient population referred to the Women's and Children's Hospital to gain further insight into the molecular and biochemical defects which cause disease. This study hypothesises that alleles which cause pseudodeficiencies of arylsulphatase A gene (ASA) may play a role in modifying the course of MLD or may be responsible for the development of the disease. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Adelaide, Dept. of Paediatrics, 1997?

Characterisation of a 4BS.4BL-5RL wheat rye translocation to improve copper efficiency of bread wheatLeach, Richard Charles January 2004 (has links)
Copper deficiency causes significant annual losses in grain yield due to poor grain set. Cereals such as wheat and barley are particularly susceptible to low copper soils whereas, crops such as rye and triticale are better able to grow and yield under such conditions of nutrient stress. The ability of rye and triticale, which carries a complete set of rye chromosomes, to tolerate low copper conditions has been attributed to a gene on rye chromosome 5R. Wheat-rye translocation lines have previously been produced carrying segments of the long arm of chromosome 5 of rye (5RL). Although these lines have expressed copper efficiency in University of Adelaide trials, until now they have been considered agronomically inferior and so have not been used as commercial cultivars. The physical size of rye segment of the 4BS.4BL-5RL translocation in a Chinese Spring background derived from the Cornell Wheat Selection 82a1-2-4-7 was measured using GISH (genomic in situ hybridization) and found to be 16% of the long arm. The size of this translocation was similar to GISH measurements of another 4BS.4BL-5RL translocation in Viking wheat background, although both these lines arose spontaneously and at different times. Molecular maps of both 4BS.4BL-5RL translocations in the two different wheat backgrounds were developed and used to screen for rare recombinants between wheat and rye in a background homozygous for the Sears' ph1b mutant. The maps revealed the approximate genetic location of the translocation breakpoint involved in these two 4BS.4BL-5RL translocations to be similar even though they are known to have arisen at different times and in different experimental populations. The similarity of these translocations suggests a unique property of the region at or near the translocation breakpoint that could be responsible for their similarity and spontaneous formation. After screening 703 critical seedlings for evidence of recombination between the 5RL segment and wheat homoeologues, no confirmed recombinants were identified. Lines containing the 4BS.4BL-5RL translocation were shown to yield equally as well as their recurrent parent under normal field conditions. In addition the presence of the 4BS.4BL-5RL had no adverse effects on a range of grain quality characteristics measured in these lines. A pot trial using lines derived from a cross between the CSHN translocation and the wheat cultivar Warigal (five backcrosses) revealed that they provided copper-efficiency even under the severest of deficiency conditions. While the results of this pot trial did not show the outstanding copper efficiency previously observed in these lines, the translocation did consistently out yield the recurrent parent under severe copper deficiency conditions. Finally, a reliable PCR marker was developed for the rapid identification of lines containing the distal portion of the 5RL chromosome. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--School of Agriculture and Wine, 2004.
