Flexible labour markets : qualities of employment, equalities of outcome

Gash, Vanessa January 2005 (has links)
This thesis investigates the quality of atypical employment to reveal whether support for the generation of temporary and part-time jobs is an effective policy for labour market renewal or whether it leads to labour market segmentation. This issue is investigated through analyses of the quality of atypical employment, with the following components of atypical work investigated: working-conditions, wages, poverty risk, exposure to unemployment and/or labour market drop out, as well as the extent to which atypical employment leads to the standard employment contract, termed its 'bridging function'. Strong and consistent variation in the quality of atypical work (relative to standard contract employment) combined with evidence of a weak bridging function is taken as an indicator of labour market marginalisation for these workers. Evidence of labour market marginalisation would suggest that non-standard contracts foster market segmentation. A key component of the analyses asserts that institutional context will structure atypical worker outcome with comparative analysis run on three countries to test this hypothesis. The countries chosen for the analysis varied in their combination of institutions thought to structure labour market outcome. The institutions thought to structure labour market outcome were classified into two groups, or axes, thought to structure labour markets in a different manner. The first group of institutions were thought to influence the relative openness or flexibility of markets, while the second was thought to influence the integration of labour market outsiders. Denmark is presented as a flexibly integrative labour market, the French market is presented as rigidly integrative and the United Kingdom is labelled flexibly non-integrative. The empirical analyses revealed strong and consistent variation in the quality of atypical work (relative to standard contract employment) and while the evidence suggests that temporary employment does provide a bridging function, the same was not true of part- time employment. This led us to conclude that policies which have sought to flexibilise the labour market through the generation of temporary and/or part-time employment are likely to contribute to market segmentation. Nonetheless we established important differences between countries which provided insights into the labour market conditions which were the most supportive of atypical worker inclusion.

Design, Synthesis and Biological testing of Novel ligands for Ghrelin Receptor

Harsha Vardhan Reddy, Burri January 2008 (has links)
<p>Abstract</p><p>G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are having the high medical importance since almost half of the medicinal drugs are designed as modulators of receptor molecules. Crystal structure or NMR structures of GPCRs are very difficult to determine because all GPCRs are typically bound to the cell membrane and thus their molecular activation mechanism is still unclear. The recent publication of the crystal structure of the 2-adrenoreceptor will provide new insights in the field of GPCR research.</p><p>Ghrelin is a peptide growth hormone which binds to the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R) and stimulates the release of growth hormone. Based on the known ghrelin receptor binding core sequences wFwLL (upper letter and lower letter representative for L-form and D-form of the amino acids respectively), we prepared two novel peptide analogs with terminal S-(2-aminoethylsulfenyl) cysteine residues. These peptides were tested for their ability to suppress the binding of ghrelin to transfected COS7 cell-line (Kidney fibroblast line from the green African monkey) cells expressing the ghrelin wild-type receptor or certain mutants thereof. As a result we observed a significant reduction of the total number of binding sites accessible for ghrelin, which increased with the time the cells were incubated with our test compounds. This observations support our hypothesis that the peptides we tested form a covalent bond with free thiols located closely to the ligand binding-site of the receptor protein by disulfide thiol exchange which is an interesting target for development of anti-obesity drugs.</p>

Good soldiers, good guys, and good parents : the meanings of donation and donated tissue in the context of the Danish donor sperm industry

Wheatley, Alison Louise January 2016 (has links)
Denmark is a major exporter of both anonymous and identity-release donor sperm worldwide, and is home to one the world's largest sperm bank networks. The country's legal framework allows for sperm donors to make the choice whether to be anonymous or to release their identity to potential offspring, in contrast to the majority of European countries which require either anonymity or identity-release donation. As such, it represents a chance for researchers to draw comparisons between donors who have explicitly made these different choices. This thesis draws on data from thirteen in-depth semi-structured interviews carried out with donors at a major Danish sperm bank. I suggest that neither the traditional ‘beer money for the weekend’ nor the currently-popular ‘wanting to help’ narrative of sperm donation tells the full story; the experiences of these donors cannot be expressed fully using an altruistic gifting model, but neither are they fully captured in terms of the capitalist exchange of labour; as ‘help’ or as ‘work’. Donor virility, and by extension masculinity, is represented through sperm quality and the discourse of “good sperm”, which then explicitly informs donor payment, complicating the relationship between donors’ embodied experience, their pride in their ‘product’ and the various ways in which semen as a substance is understood: “good sperm” could make a donor into a ‘good guy’ who could help with the falling national birth count, whereas sperm that was “bad” could be reframed as the product of donors’ lifestyles or as ‘good soldiers’ fighting against the freezing process. Donor accounts of sperm donation were also informed by the wider web of connections that are formed through the process of sperm donation: real, potential, or imagined connections between donor and offspring, donor and their imagined ‘good’ recipient, offspring and donor families, and donors and the wider Danish nation in terms of the production of so-called ‘Viking sperm’ and the extension of the ‘help’ discourse through the falling Danish sperm count.

A Performance Guide for Two Solo Violin Works by Carl Nielsen: Prelude, Theme and Variations, Op. 48 and Preludio e Presto, Op. 52

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: The two solo violin works by Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) have been largely overlooked since their composition in the 1920s. These pieces are representative of Nielsen's mature style, combining elements of classical form (the Theme and Variations) as well as processes more commonly found in the twentieth century (through-composition and non-tonal harmonic language). This paper is designed to bring these long-neglected works to light and make them more approachable for violin students, teachers and performers. As Denmark's leading composer, Nielsen was well regarded in his lifetime, although his isolation from mainland Europe created obstacles in his path toward international fame. Rather than following trends in post-romantic music, he remained true to his own musical ideals. This choice often isolated him further during his career, but his unique blend of chromatic harmony, driving rhythms and juxtapositions of character captivates modern listeners. Although small in scope compared to his symphonies and other large works, the enthusiastic spirit and indomitable energy of the solo violin works reflect Nielsen's character at its best. Combining a high level of virtuosity with solid structural integrity, textural variety and musical interest, these works deserve a much more prominent place in the standard violin repertoire. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012

Význam cestovního ruchu pro regionální rozvoj členských států EU / The Importance of Tourism for Regional Development of the EU Member States

Mikeš, Martin January 2011 (has links)
The European Region has a dominant position in the world tourism market, and the EU is the most visited destination in the world. However, with increasing competition from outlying countries, the EU's relative share is decreasing. This Master thesis deals with the assessment of tourism in the EU member states, with particular attention paid to an analysis of the tourism market in Denmark. The thesis aims to provide an overview of the importance of tourism for the EU, describe current trends and outline prospects for future development in this economic sector.
