Time Dependent Studies of a 19-Element CANDU Fuel Bundle in the Blanket of a Thermonuclear Reactor

This is Part A. / <p> Effects in 19 element CANDU fuel bundles containing ThO2 and UO2, located in thermonuclear reactor blankets, have been examined for a variety of blanket designs. The buildup in time of nuclides derived from Th232 by neutron capture was studied. The essential CTR (Controlled Thermonuclear Reactor) blanket features that were examined were tritium breeding in the blanket (the fusion reaction of interest was the DT reaction resulting in the production of a 14.1 MeV neutron and a 3.5 MeV alpha particle), neutron multiplication in the blanket and the U233 production. Means of optimizing these features were also examined. Some conclusions concerning the use and influence of the CANDU bundle are made.</p> <p> It is of interest to study the details of the buildup of U233 in the bundles with the view of perhaps transferring bundles directly from the CTR blanket into a core of a fission power reactor. As such, it would be necessary to convert approximately 3% of the initial thorium present to U233 before transferral. This report examines time steps over which this could be achieved and looks at the performance of the blanket as a whole when such changes occur. The production of unwanted radioactive isotopes is looked at with suggestions of how to minimize this production without harming the rest of the blanket's basic functions.</p> <p> Procedures outlined in the preliminary report "Bench-Mark Neutronic Calculations for Fusion Reactor Designs" by S.A. Kushneriuk and P.Y. Wong form a basis for all of the calculations made in this report. Based on the findings of that report, it is expected that values presented here do reflect, to a fair degree of accuracy, conditions encountered in the CTR blankets studied.</p> / Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

Van Hove Singularities in BCS Theory

<p> The influence of a logarithmically dependent (van Hove singularity) electronic density of states is studied in the weak-coupling limit. Through analytic and numerical analysis it is found that the model can give rise to temperatures in the 100 K range, and that universal BCS ratios such as 2Δ/kBTC and ΔC/γTC do not change essentially from their constant BCS values. The consequences of this model on the calculation of the isotope effect and specific heat are discussed in detail and compared to recent experimental results.</p> / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Space-Dependent Nuclear Reactor Transient Analyses by Multiple Temporal-Mode Transformation

<p> A multiple temporal-mode transformation is applied to the finite difference form of the space-dependent reactor kinetics equations with the aim of reducing the truncation error. The transformation method is incorporated into an existing alternaing-direction explicit code and is tested on three homogeneous problems in one and two dimenisions as well as on a one-dimensional space-dependent CANDU-type problem. The numerical results have confirmed some characteristics of this solution formalism with respect to accuracy and stability. Family-Managed Home Care in Ontario for Families with Technology-Dependent Children / Family-Managed Home Care

Background: Advances in technology have led to an increasing number of CMC-technology dependent children being discharged from hospital to their home communities. Families with CMC-technology dependent children require home care nursing services established prior to discharge. The Family-Managed Home Care model is used by some families to acquire these nursing services. Aim: The study purpose was to explore how families with CMC-technology dependent children describe their use of and experiences with using the Family-Managed Home Care model to coordinate nursing care. Methods: Thorne’s interpretive description method was used. Virtual, in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine parents of CMC-technology dependent children. Data was analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Parents of CMC-technology dependent children using the Family-Managed Home Care model became their child’s care manager. The process of managing the child’s care occurs in three interrelated and overlapping phases: (1) transitioning home, (2) building the home care team, and (3) partnering to provide care. Control was identified as a central concept that underpinned each step in the overarching process of managing the child’s care. Parents value the control provided by the Family-Managed Home Care model as this alleviated some stress, anxiety, and uncertainty in caring for a CMC-technology dependent child at home. Conclusion: Parents using this model of home care require enhanced support from LHINs and health care providers. Increasing health care provider knowledge of the Family-Managed Home Care model is needed to further support parents. Improved organization of discharges and policy changes are needed. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / Family-Managed Home Care is a self-directed home care model parents of children with medical complexities that are technology dependent (CMC-technology dependent children) utilize to implement home care nursing services. The consistent presence of home care nurses is vital to preserve family functioning and ensure the safety of the CMC-technology dependent child. This study’s purpose was to understand how parents of CMC-technology dependent children use and describe their experiences of coordinating nursing care under the Family-Managed Home Care model. Nine parents were interviewed. Findings indicated that in the process of managing the child’s care (1) transitioning home is overwhelming, (2) parents take on the role of becoming their child’s care manager, (3) parental control is a valuable aspect of using Family-Managed Home Care, and (4) enhanced support is needed for parents using this home care model. Findings can be used to improve support for families using the Family-Managed Home Care model.

An Analytical Method to Determine the Mechanical Properties of Linear Viscoelastic Solids

A new methodology has been developed to model the viscoelastic behavior of solids using a general spectrum function. Not all materials can be modeled using simple Kelvin-Voigt (K-V) or Maxwell elements where the viscoelastic parameters are constants. There is a need for a general spectrum function that can be used to model the Lame' functions which constitute all properties of interest. Thus far, there is no method like the one presented in this study that can determine the moduli of viscoelastic materials. This study develops a methodology by which the time dependent properties of homogeneous and non-homogeneous materials may be modeled. Once the Lame' functions are determined, the Principle of Correspondence is applied to the elastic equations to determine the necessary properties. In uniaxial tension the time dependent strain, modulus, Poisson's ratio, and compliance are determined. The time dependent deflection is determined for beams in flexure. Where applicable, parameters determined from the analytical model are compared to the available experimental data. Good agreements are found between the analytical and experimental data sets.
