This thesis aims to contribute to the studies on the history of design in South America,
focusing on a regional framework set by Argentina and Brazil. The objects of
study here are Brazilian cultural magazines Habitat (1950–1965) and Mirante das
Artes,&tc (1967–1968), and the Argentine nueva visión (1951–1957) and Summa
(1963–1969). The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate how the subject industrial
design was addressed in the articles published by these periodicals, over the
1950s and 1960s, period of emergency and institutionalization of this activity in these
countries. In that sense, based on the dialectical, historical and comparative
methods, an overview of historical, social, cultural and economic factors that led to
the emergence of industrial design in Brazil and Argentina was elaborated. The individual
trajectory of each magazine – focusing on your articles published on the
subject industrial design, considering the conceptual, educational, professional and
institutional aspects of this activity – was drawn. And, finally, these approaches
were compared in order to identify the main topics raised. It is believed that more
than capture, report, review and analyze the facts and issues related to this subject
in these countries, these magazines have had an active role in shaping the very own
industrial design field.
