Neurophysiological Correlates of Self-monitoring Differentially Moderate the Relation Between Maternal Depression and Children's Behaviour Problems

Research in developmental psychopathology has advanced our understanding of emotional dysregulation underlying children’s behavioural problems and their association with maternal depression. Neurophysiological measures may further clarify these relations. The ERN (error-related negativity) is an event-related potential commonly used to assess self-monitoring, with large amplitudes reflecting internalizing and small amplitudes reflecting externalizing symptoms. The present study investigated the effect of ERN amplitude on the relation between maternal depression and internalizing and externalizing problems in a sample of children referred for aggressive behaviour. ERN amplitudes were recorded while 50 children (8-10 years of age) engaged in a go/no-go emotion induction task. Results indicated an association between high ERN amplitudes and internalizing behaviour and between small ERN amplitudes and externalizing behaviours for children with depressed mothers. These findings suggest that the degree of self-monitoring (indexed by ERN amplitude) moderates the relation between maternal depression and psychopathological outcomes in children.

Factors related to parent provision of sexuality education for youth with asperger's disorder and high functioning autism

<p> This study examined the relationship between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms, parental romantic expectations, and parental provision of sexuality education in a sample of 120 parents of youth aged 12-18 years who were diagnosed with ASD by a healthcare professional. Regression analyses showed that overall ASD symptoms predicted parental romantic expectations, but did not predict parental provision of sexuality education. Secondary analyses using simple linear regression showed that specific ASD symptoms (i.e., social motivation and social cognition) predicted a small amount of variance in parental provision of sex education. Additionally, exploratory regression analyses identified other factors related to parent provision of sex education for youth with ASD. Parents who rated themselves as more effective regarding their ability to communicate with their children about sexuality and parents who rated themselves as more prepared to manage their child's sexual development covered a greater number of sexuality-related topics with their child. The results of the current study have implications for the development of interventions to promote effective sexuality communication and positive sexual health outcomes for youth with ASD.</p>

In response, this paper systematically reviews the anthropological, sociological, psychological and developmental (Eriksonian) literature to examine the utility of this paradigm within a contemporary context, and in relation to both normal and at-risk adolescent identity development. The utility of this paradigm within the context of group and individual interventions is also reviewed. Strong support is provided that the 'rites of passage' paradigm can augment and complement current psychological theorising and interventions.
