L'accompagnement en contexte de formation universitaire : etude de la Direction de mémoire comme facteur de réussite en Master / Supervision in higher education : a variation of success ine the Master degree

Gérard, Laëtitia 06 November 2009 (has links)
Unavailable

Analysing lightning data from two spatially separate magnetic direction finders

Rice, David Andrew 23 March 2009 (has links)
Two lightning detectors, of the magnetic direction finder type, form part of a two station system for determining the position of lightning strikes. The detectors are on a baseline of approximately 600 m, and the ultimate aim of the system is to accurately detect and map lightning within a radius of 30 km. Although no real time capability is present, the archive data collected from each separate station is used to find the offset errors in the azimuthal orientation, as well as in time (using processes described in Appendix A). The relative offset errors are determined by shifting the time and azimuthal information for one station’s data and calculating the maximum possible matching records (within certain time and azimuth criteria) for each incremental shift. An analysis of the peaks in total matching records, when plotted against the relevant shift increments, is performed in order to obtain the values of the offset errors. Between the two individual stations, the relative offset in orientation is found to be 24.5 degrees, and in time to be 0.001305 days (112.75 seconds). The individual stations, as well as the triangulated data calculated from matching records, can also be calibrated using data from the South African Weather Service Lightning Detection Network (SAWSLDN). Individual station calibration indicated an offset of +6.4 degrees and 0.00575 days (496.8 seconds) for Station 1, with the offsets for Station 2 determined as +29.4 degrees and −0.000105 days (9.07 seconds). Comparison of triangulated data to SAWSLDN data yields unexpected results with regard to resultant shifts, which may point to an error or anomaly in the triangulation calculations. A detailed analysis of the storm data is contained in Appendix B of the dissertation.

Perception of gaze and head direction in groups of faces

Florey, Joseph January 2017 (has links)
Gaze direction and head rotation are powerful cues that inform humans about another person's attention, intentions and even emotion. Previous research has focused on understanding how people make judgements about individual faces in direct view. However in everyday life, people are often presented with groups of faces and need to judge where the attention of that group is directed, such as in group conversations or when giving presentations. This thesis presents research whose aim is to better understand how gaze direction and head rotation are perceived in the visual periphery and in groups. First, observers' perception of gaze deviation in the visual periphery was tested, using psychophysical methods and modelling. The results showed that observers' ability to judge gaze perception is severely limited, and that observers' judgements are severely biased by head rotation in the visual periphery. Second, observers' ability to perceive the average gaze or head direction of a group of spatially distributed faces was investigated. This was done using equivalent noise analysis, a technique which gives estimates for observers' internal noise (how certain they are in their judgements of any individual face) and their effective sample size (how many faces they are able to combine into their average). The findings revealed that head rotation was averaged with less uncertainty and greater effective sample size than gaze deviation, suggesting that observers can more precisely and efficiently pool information about head rotation than gaze. Finally, averaging of heads and gaze stimuli presented in temporal sequences was analysed using the same equivalent noise technique and compared to spatial averaging. In sequences, the differences in processing between head and gaze direction disappear, suggesting that poor peripheral perception of gaze is the limit on our averaging of gaze cues.

Global rigidity and symmetry of direction-length frameworks

Clinch, Katharine January 2018 (has links)
A two-dimensional direction-length framework (G; p) consists of a multigraph G = (V ;D;L) whose edge set is formed of "direction" edges D and "length" edges L, and a realisation p of this graph in the plane. The edges of the framework represent geometric constraints: length edges x the distance between their endvertices, whereas direction edges specify the gradient of the line through both endvertices. In this thesis, we consider two problems for direction-length frameworks. Firstly, given a framework (G; p), is it possible to nd a di erent realisation of G which satis es the same direction and length constraints but cannot be obtained by translating (G; p) in the plane, and/or rotating (G; p) by 180 ? If no other such realisation exists, we say (G; p) is globally rigid. Our main result on this topic is a characterisation of the direction-length graphs G which are globally rigid for all "generic" realisations p (where p is generic if it is algebraically independent over Q). Secondly, we consider direction-length frameworks (G; p) which are symmetric in the plane, and ask whether we can move the framework whilst preserving both the edge constraints and the symmetry of the framework. If the only possible motions of the framework are translations, we say the framework is symmetry-forced rigid. Our main result here is for frameworks with single mirror symmetry: we characterise symmetry-forced in nitesimal rigidity for such frameworks which are as generic as possible. We also obtain partial results for frameworks with rotational or dihedral symmetry.
