A rhetorical analysis of the English speeches of Queen Rania of JordanAmaireh, Hanan Ali January 2013 (has links)
The focus of this study is the area of discourse analysis. This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of the political discourse of Queen Rania of Jordan’s English speeches. The data of the study consist of 56 English speeches (56,706) words delivered by Queen Rania from 2001 to 2010 in different countries around the world. This study investigates how Queen Rania tries to convince the audience by using various rhetorical techniques. It investigates two main canons of rhetoric, invention and style, which are based on the classical Aristotelian classification of rhetoric. In analysing invention, her ethical, emotional and logical appeals to the audience will be examined in detail. In addition to that, this study analyses Queen Rania’s style in her speeches in a corpus-based study of two figures of speech, metaphor and metonymy. This study examines whether her speeches draw on the characteristics of the feminine style of women’s political discourse proposed by Campbell (1989a), Dow and Tonn (1993) and Blankenship and Robson (1995). The qualitative and quantitative analysis reveals that women’s political discourse has common features such as using personal experience to construct political decisions, being inclusive, believing in achievements, not mere words and promises and prioritising women’s issues and supporting their rights in the political arena. These observations support the results of the studies propounded by Campbell (1989a), Dow and Tonn (1993) and Blankenship and Robson (1995). It is argued that figures of speech such as metaphor and metonymy are not only used for ornamentation to make the speeches appealing to the audience; they are also used to call the audience to action and convince them to adopt certain ideas or change prior ones. It is revealed that political speeches use certain rhetorical techniques in order to persuade the audience such as employing rhetorical questions, telling stories, argumentation and identification, inter alia.

The nature of fictional discourseVicas, Astrid January 1992 (has links)
This dissertation presents an account of fictional discourse which is teleological. According to it, questions about what is said in fiction and how it ought to be said are answerable in terms of the goals and methods belonging specifically to fiction-making as a practice. Viewed in such a way, it is argued that the incompleteness of fictional discourse and its apparent tolerance of inconsistency are distinctive of it. Moreover, it is argued that there is a sense in which one can produce true statements in fiction without thereby committing one self to the thesis that words made use of in fiction are endowed with reference. Throughout the dissertation, the view espoused in it is contrasted with rival positions on the issues of what fiction is about, and whether it can be true. It is argued that a teleological account of fictional discourse can present a coherent alternative to these.

M.A. (Afrikaans) / A linguistic study can be approached in many ways. In this study language usage is viewed from a pragmatic angle. One type of discourse, namely a written literary discourse, and a drama in particular, is used as a point of departure in order to illustrate a certain discourse element. The drama, Moeders en Dogters by Corlia Fourie, is placed within a speech act framework and is seen as a macro speech act. By concentrating on one element of the discourse, namely conversation strategy, it is the intention to show how this discourse element, which appears in the illocutionary units of the drama, can be linked to the intention of the abstract author. This intent ion manifests itself as illocution in the drama which is directed at achieving a specific perlocution on the part of the audience/reader. Chapter two discusses the communication process, the term discourse and the various aspects of discourse that are relevant for this study, namely the different types of discourse, the process by which discourse comes into being, the structure of the discourse and discourse strategies. Different types of discourse strategies are pointed out and subsequently one discourse strategy, namely conversation strategy is concentrated on. The role and function of conversation strategies are highlighted and one type of conversation strategy, namely turn-taking, is isolated. The dualistic character of turn-taking, firstly as conversation strategy and secondly as structure element, is discussed in chapter three. The functioning of turn-taking patterns in Moeders en Dogters is illustrated, and subsequently certain conclusions are drawn concerning the relation between turn-taking on the one hand and conversation rules, illusion , perlocution, other conversation strategies and conve r se t i on units, on the other hand. Chapter four concentrates on the way in which turn taking patterns between the characters in combination with the temporal-spatial context within which the drama takes place, can be redirected to the intention of the abstract author, which is aimed at a specific perlocution on the part of the audience/reader. By pointing out this relation, the function of conversation strategies (and specifically in this case turn- taking as conversation strategy,) will be made clear, namely that it operates as a binding discourse element that leads to cohesion in the first place and eventually to coherency within the discourse.

M.A. (Afrikaans) / A comparison between the narrative-fictive discourse situation and the canonical discourse situation reveals differences as well as similarities between the two modes of discourse. Every act of utterance occurs in a spatio-temporal context whose centre or zero point coincides with the speaker's here and now. The literary discourse is conducted on more than one level and this introduces more than one context into the universe of discourse. The existence of two contexts has marked implications for the use of deictic terms in the narrative text. In the first chapter of this study the deictic categories of person, time and place in the canonical situation-of-utterance is placed alongside the same categories in the narrative-fictive discourse situation. It is established that a primary as well as a fictive deictic centre exists in the latter. The second chapter deals with the structural function of the deictic categories in the narrative text of Die kremetartekspedisie. There is a continual shift between the narrating-self (the origo of the primary deictic centre) and the experiencing-self (origo of the fictive deictic centre). The pronominal reference remains in the first person and it is at the spatio-temporal level that the shift between the two selves is effected...
