El desarrollo de la tecnología digital ha creado la necesidad de un ‘saber hacer’ específico que frecuentemente se canaliza a través de publicaciones periódicas de divulgación masiva, como son PC World y PC Magazine. Si bien se presupone la objetividad de la información tecnológica (y científica), se distinguen en estas publicaciones dos tipos de registros: a) un registro correspondiente al discurso científico-tecnológico y b) un registro correspondiente al discurso cotidiano. Dentro del registro cotidiano, se observa la recurrencia de expresiones metafóricas que personifican la tecnología en cuatro dimensiones; esto es, como ser viviente, como ser social, como ser emocional y como ser pensante. El objetivo de esta tesis es analizar las condiciones lingüístico-discursivas de la expresión metafórica en el registro cotidiano de las revistas mencionadas. Intentamos dar cuenta de los alcances del uso metafórico en esta manifestación particular del discurso de la informática. Partimos de la hipótesis de que las expresiones metafóricas funcionan como recursos ideológicos que van creando estructuras latentes de significados; estas estructuras construyen representaciones de la realidad que reflejan y determinan modos de ser, de sentir y de actuar en el mundo. En concordancia con Lakoff y Johnson (1980) entendemos que nuestro sistema conceptual ordinario es de base metafórica y que la expresión lingüística es la realización superficial de tal manera de conceptualizar la realidad. Dado el propósito crítico de nuestro estudio, los instrumentos analíticos y conceptuales de la Lingüística Sistémico-Funcional de Halliday y del Análisis (Crítico) del Discurso constituyen la herramienta teórico-metodológica. Así, la integración de los aspectos cognitivos, lingüísticos (léxico-gramaticales) y funcionales, subyacentes en el uso metafórico, nos permite descubrir intencionalidades implícitas que orientan la percepción de la realidad hacia una dirección determinada. El resultado de nuestra investigación muestra que en el caso de estas revistas de divulgación la personificación de la tecnología, lejos de destacar sus virtudes como auxiliar valioso capaz de equiparar, suplantar o incluso superar la inteligencia humana, apela a la idea de la fragilidad y vulnerabilidad del ser humano y, por tanto, del software y el hardware. Palabras clave: divulgación informática, discurso metafórico, personificación de la tecnología, efectos ideológicos, vulnerabilidad. / Popular computer magazines, like PC World and PC Magazine, are frequent sources of information for the expertise needed after the development of digital technology. Although, technological (and scientific) objectivity is presupposed in these publications, two types of registers can be distinguished: a) the scientific and technological discourse register, and b) the everyday language register. In the latter, metaphoric expressions that personify technology are recurrent; technology is thus metaphorically represented in four human dimensions: as a living being, a social being, an emotional being and a mental being. The aim of this work is to analyze the linguistic and discursive conditions of metaphoric expressions in the everyday language register of the computer magazines mentioned above. It is our intention to account for the metaphoric use of this particular instance of discourse. We support the hypothesis that metaphoric expressions function as ideological resources which create latent structures of meaning; these structures construct representations of reality that reflect and determine ways of being, feeling and acting in the world. In line with Lakoff and Johnson (1980), we understand that our ordinary conceptual system is metaphorically-based, and that linguistic expressions are surface realizations of this particular way of conceptualizing reality. Due to the critical perspective in this study, the analytical instruments provided by both Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Linguistics and (Critical) Discourse Analysis constitute the theoretical and methodological framework. By integrating cognitive, linguistic (lexis and grammar), and functional aspects underlying metaphoric use, we discover implicit intentions which mediate the perception of reality. Results show that personification of technology in these popular computer magazines, far from equating, replacing or even surpassing human intelligence, resorts to the idea of human weakness and vulnerability, thereby representing both hardware and software as equally flawed.
