Improved delivery system and biological activity of porcine bone morphogenetic proteins.

Sibiya, Sibusiso Jeffrey. January 2011 (has links)
M. Tech. Pharmaceutical Sciences. / Xenogeneic collagen has previously been reported to be a poor delivery system for bone morphogenetic proteins, because of its immunogenic effects in the host. In the laboratory the researcher uses, the problems associated with the xenogeneic bone matrix has been overcome by chemical swelling employing acetic acid followed by pepsin digestion to reduce telopeptides. This has improved host biocompatibility. The central focus of the current study was to improve the performance of the previously developed delivery system by employing a combination of BMP-2 and TGF-ß1 in a rat heterotopic assay.

A study of a mechatronic drive module to be coupled on an ordinary manual propelled wheelchair (MPW)

Vilakazi, Japie Petrus. January 2012 (has links)
M. Tech. Electrical Engineering. / Modelizes, simulate and analyse the behaviour of an ordinary manual propelled wheelchair (MPW) when equipped with a mechatronic drive module. This serves as a preliminary study towards investigating whether a suitable mechatronic drive module could be designed and easily plugged on an ordinary MPW without any difficulties to obtain full propulsion of the chair with the use of a joystick for navigation purposes. For modelling purposes, a dynamic systems modelling method called Bond Graph was used.

Formal verification of initial network entry protocols in wimax networks.

Komu, Beth Njeri. January 2012 (has links)
M. Tech. Electrical Engineering. / Discusses the study as limited to the formal specification/modelling and formal verification of protocols proposed and applicable to the initial network entry procedure in WiMAX networks. Secondly, formal specification of the existing protocols under consideration will be based on their informal specification available in the literature and not on proprietary protocols for which little or no information is available. Thirdly, this research work does not intend to wipe out the state space explosion problem but rather applies existing optimization techniques to supress it. Finally, the study does not assess the usability performance impact of the proposed security scheme and thus recommends that this analysis should be done as future work to evaluate the functionality and soundness of deploying the proposed security scheme.

Community policing and crime prevention : a community assesment [sic] from Eldorado Park, Gauteng

Mabasa, Hlupheka Michael. January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (MTech. degree in Policing.)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2012. / The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (Act 108 of 1996), prescribe Community policing as the style of policing to be adopted by the South African Police Service to meet the safety and security requirements of all people in the country. Fundamental transformation is therefore needed to ensure that the South African Police Service develops into a community-oriented police service which adopts a consultative approach to meeting the safety and security needs of the communities it serves, a service which therefore becomes more accessible and acceptable and more efficient and effective. Based on the philosophy of the establishment of community policing approach in South Africa and the time lag, one wonders if the cardinal objective has been met in terms of crime prevention, especially community and neighbourhood based ones as crime rate in South Africa appears to be on the increase. This study therefore investigated the impact of community policing approach on crime prevention in Eldorado Park Policing Area, specifically, the successes, failure and challenges facing community policing in the area where interrogated.

Revisiting the incremental housing process as a policy implementation tool for accelerating housing delivery: a study of selected rural areas in South Africa

Mokgadinyane, Sakane Annah. January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (MTech. degree in Public Management.)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2012. / This study has examined the implementation of the incremental housing process, or as the researcher has termed it, self-driven housing, in rural South Africa. Self-driven housing is the type of housing where individual households drive the processes of addressing their own housing issues, with government playing a supporter role. The purpose of the study was to obtain a thorough understanding of how this process has been implemented internationally and in South Africa to improve the lives and living spaces of the rural poor. Most importantly, this study was aimed at investigating whether this process can be considered a viable alternative to the provision of free low-cost government houses in the quest for reducing the housing backlog, in South Africa in general, and urban areas in particular. In other words, "Can the self-driven housing approach be a solution to the housing crisis in South Africa?"
