Overlaying the Process / Processen överlappad

Antus, Josefin January 2017 (has links)
The Gujarat region, in which Ahmedabad is situated, is renowned for its textile production methods. The crafts of refining textile has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries and thereby the knowledge has been preserved. In recent years this chain of knowledge has been challenged through the efficiency and economical gain of chemical dyes and mass-production.   The aim of the project is to widen the knowledge about the craft behind the textile and give room for the skill to be passed down to the next generation while at the same time give room for developing the techniques and designs to fit the current mode.   A large part of the project evolves around the process of refining textile and the basis for my understanding of the crafts and their spatial requirements has mainly been through looking into the process of three resist-dye techniques. By looking at the process of each technique I was able to find where their spatial requirements overlap and how they could be organized according to production process.   The project consist of two parts, one dedicated to the craft of refining and producing textile and one part where the work of the craftsmen can be exhibited, tailored, sold and taught through open workshops. The process of refining textile is separated from the rest of the project by the circulation. The more public part of the project is placed along the busy road as to shield the textile process from noise and dust. The two buildings are organized vertically following the logic of privacy and participation. The most private part of the refinement process, the dyeing is placed furthest away from the public while the public program become more participatory the further one climbs.
