Sand sources, volumes and movement patterns on Wreck Beach, Vancouver, British ColumbiaPool, Meridith Ines January 1975 (has links)
Along Wreck Beach the existing headland cliffs are eroding
and receding under attack from terrestrial and marine agents.
Valuable property is being lost and nearby structures endangered.
Remedial measures were undertaken in the summer of 1974
to halt wave erosion along the cliff base. A rock groin and
sand—gravel protective beach scheme was only partially success
ful during the following year. To design an adequate protection
system for the cliffs wind and wave effects need to be deter
mined to fully understand the resulting sand movement patterns.
Understanding the processes affecting Wreck Beach is the first
step in controlling them.
Methods used to investigate sand movement included field
coverage of the study area in photographic form as well as
instrument cross—sectioning over a two year period. These data
were correlated with historical wind records and predictions
from wave refraction diagrams to determine seasonal movement
onto and off the beach face and the cyclic progression of
sandbars in the longshore current direction. Annual sand trans
port volumes, sand supply sources and amounts contributed are
outlined.
In designing a protection scheme in which longshore trans
port requirements must be considered the information and calcu
lations suggests that the Fraser River North Arm could amply
provide the longshore transport supply requirements. However,
some means in addition to the present natural processes must
be available to bring this sand into a range where wind gen
erated wave activity can incorporate it into the existing
Wreck Beach system. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Civil Engineering, Department of / Graduate

A Point Of Care Terminal For COPD Home ManagementKandasamy Sekar, Sabarish January 2016 (has links)
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is currently one of the most prevalent lung diseases around the world, which runs an insidious course, measured over years, with an often-undiagnosed initial phase. Present clinical treatment approach for COPD results in repeated clinical visits and extended hospital stays burdening the available healthcare infrastructures, economy, and also impacting patient quality of life. To alleviate this burden, modern healthcare approaches focus on developing patient-centric solutions in which the patients should be able to request and receive quality medical assistance at their convenience, if possible from their respective homes. In this thesis work, a medical perspective on the treatment and managing of COPD is first understood in order to enunciate the functional requirements of a developing home healthcare system as an alternative to clinical treatment of COPD. Thereafter, an investigative study is carried out to explore recent developments in ICT technologies and their role in healthcare. Later, suitable sensing platforms and communication standards are identified in order to develop a working prototype of a Point of Care (POC) terminal as a proof-of-concept. The POC comprising of a breathing training device and a care application running on an android based smart device is used to measure and monitor breathing patterns of the patients and motivate them for better results and continuous improvement. An optimization exercise for low power consumption is performed on the breathing training device to facilitate additional mobility and long-term monitoring for the same. Through the observations and evaluations, scope for improvement in future versions of the device is also identified.

Bulimia: a Phenomenological ApproachSchachtel, Bernard, 1943- 05 1900 (has links)
This study used a qualitative/phenomenological research methodology to examine the perspective of five bulimic subjects about their lives in order to understand the bulimic individual's point of view and develop a clearer picture of the world of the bulimic. This approach involved three interviews for each of the five subjects totalling 22 1/2 hours. The three interviews dealt with the subjects' past and present experiences and their ideas about the future. The qualitative/phenomenological methodology created an in-depth view of each subject's relationship to the beginning of her bulimia and its subsequent development. During the period when the interviews were being transcribed, patterns and concepts emerged and were examined. Nine categories were developed from this data reflecting some of the characteristics of a bulimic's personality. Six research questions were formulated and then answered by evaluating them in the light of the nine categories as well as data and descriptions from the interviews. No one single category was found to be uniquely dominant, but rather the categories tended to appear in a cluster-like fashion depending on the individual personality of the bulimic. The data of this study revealed a distinction between the personality and the behavior of the bulimic. A form with a Likert-like response was developed by the researcher and given out to 11 raters in order to evaluate the presence or non-presence of the categories in selected passages. On the basis of the findings of this study, with its limited subject pool, certain recommendations are presented for the reader that might perhaps be of some use in understanding bulimia.

Graphs of integral distance and their propertiesHabineza, Olivier January 2021 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Understanding the geometries of points in space has been attractive to mathematicians
for ages. As a model, twelve years ago, Kurz and Meyer [32] considered point
sets in the m-dimensional a ne space Fmq
over a nite eld Fq with q = pr elements,
p prime, where each squared Euclidean distance of two points is a square in Fq: The
latter points are said to be at integral distance in Fmq
, and the sets above are called
integral point sets.

A semiparametric approach to change-point analysis in volatility dynamics of financial dataHu, Huaiyu 07 October 2021 (has links)
One of the essential features of financial time series data is volatility. It is often the case that, over time, structural changes occur in volatility, and an accurate estimation of the volatility of financial time series requires careful identification of the change-points. A common approach to modeling the volatility of time series data is based on the well-known Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedastic (GARCH) model. Although the problem of change-point estimation of volatility dynamics derived from the GARCH model has been considered in the literature, these approaches rely on parametric assumptions of the conditional error distribution, which are frequently violated in financial time series. This misspecification of error distribution may lead to change-point detection inaccuracies, resulting in unreliable GARCH volatility estimates. In this dissertation, we introduce novel change-point detection algorithms based on a semiparametric GARCH model. The proposed semiparametric GARCH model retains the structural advantages of the GARCH process while incorporating the flexibility of nonparametric conditional error distribution. Consequently, the likelihood function and the corresponding volatility estimates obtained via this semiparametric approach are more accurate than the traditional Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimation (QMLE) method that relies on an assumed parametric error distribution.
The main objective of the change-point estimation problem is to detect the exact number and locations of the change-points. This dissertation proposes an innovative semiparametric GARCH process in developing solutions for change-point estimation problems. Specifically, a penalized likelihood approach based on a semiparametric GARCH model and an efficient binary segmentation algorithm is developed to estimate the change points' locations. The results demonstrate that in terms of change-point identification and estimation accuracy for multiple GARCH process variations, the proposed semiparametric method outperforms the commonly used approaches to change-point analysis in financial data.

The effect of ethnic segregation on teacher mobilityGanten, Jacob January 2022 (has links)
We examine the applicability of segregation and tipping points on the labor market of teachers to reconcile if higher levels of ethnic segregation in schools are responded to with labor movement. The main results derived from the research is that overall, there is no statistical significance that affects the sorting of teachers across schools. While the raw data show that higher levels of ethnic segregation yield significant results that give meaning to the idea that qualified teachers move out at different ethnic tipping points in schools, there is no significant effect of ethnic segregation on the number of teachers or the composition of teachers using a fixed effects model. The addition of size and parents' education as variables further emphasizes that negative effects in Malmö municipality cannot be found alongside different tipping points. The result of the study speaks to the number of foreign students in a school being largely irrelevant for teacher mobility across schools in a municipality.
