Electrical properties of graphite nanoparticles in silicone : flexible oscillators and electromechanical sensingLittlejohn, Samuel David January 2013 (has links)
This thesis reports the discovery of a wide negative di↵erential resistance (NDR) region in a graphite-silicone composite that was utilized to create a strain-tuned flexible oscillator. Encoding the strain into frequency mimics the behavior of mechanoreceptor neurons in the skin and demonstrates a flexible and electronically active material suitable for state of the art bio-electronic applications. The NDR was investigated over a range of composite filling fractions and temperatures; alongside theoretical modelling to calculate the tunneling current through a graphite-silicone barrier. This led to the understanding that the NDR is the result of a semi-metal to insulator transition of embedded graphene bilayers within the graphite nanoparticles. The transition, brought about by a transverse bias across specifically orientated particles, opens a partial band-gap at the Fermi level of the bilayer. NDR in a flexible material has not been observed before and has potential for creating a flexible active device. The electromechanical properties of the composite were considered through a bend induced bilayer strain. The piezoresistance was found to be dominated by transient resistance spiking from the breaking of conduction lines, which then reform according to the viscoelasticity of the polymer matrix. The resistance spiking was embraced as a novel method for sensitive di↵erential pressure detection, used in the development of two applications. Firstly, it was employed for the detection of ultrasound waves and found to have an acoustic pressure detection threshold as low as 48 Pa. A commensurability was observed between the composite width and ultrasound wavelength which was shown to be consistent with the formation of standing waves, described by Bragg’s law. Secondly, a differential pressure array of 64 composite pixels was fabricated and demonstrated to image pressures under 3.8 kPa at a resolution of 10 dpi. The NDR active region was incorporated into an LC circuit where it was demonstrated to sustain oscillations of up to 12.5 kHz. The composite was then strained and an intrinsic frequency was observed which had a linear dependence on the strain with a frequency shift of 84 Hz / % strain. Lastly the composite was used in a strain-tuned amplifier circuit and shown to provide a gain of up to 4.5. This thesis provided the groundwork for a completely flexible electronically active device for futuristic bio-electronic skins with resolutions and sensitivities rivalling those of human tactile sensing.

This thesis deals with the establishment and development of the East German press agency Allgemeiner Deutscher Nachrichtendienst (ADN). History and main development changes and tendencies of the agency are described here from its foundation in 1946 till the beginning of 1990. The chapter about cooperation between the East German agency ADN and the Czechoslovak News Agency CTK is part of the main body of the text about the ADN. The paper also gives a brief outline of history of the Soviet occupation zone of Germany and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1945 till the end of 1989. Further, the view on the media sphere of the GDR and its main attributes and characteristics form a part of the paper. Regulation and control system of the media in East Germany in the second half of the 20th century is also introduced in this part.

The Informational Effects of Non-Deal RoadshowsHowell, Dylan A. 08 1900 (has links)
Non-deal roadshows (NDR) are privately held one-on-one meetings between the buy-side of financial institutions and firm management. Using a novel dataset of these meetings, I examine the effects that NDR meetings have on the outcomes of two important corporate events: seasoned equity offerings (SEOs) and mergers and acquisitions (M&As). I also study the potential implications of the information content in NDRs on the behavior of stock returns following earnings announcements, which has been the subject of much academic work. I structure the dissertation in three essays. In the first essay, I examine the relationship between NDR activity and the underpricing of SEOs. I find that NDRs are associated with lower SEO underpricing. This association is stronger for firms with infrequent NDR activity, for smaller firms, and for firms with higher analysts' forecast errors. These findings suggest that NDRs reduce the level of asymmetric information between firms and investors, which results in a lower cost of raising equity. In Essay 2, I investigate whether the occurrence of NDR meetings affects post-earnings-announcement drift (PEAD). I find that PEAD declines after NDR activity when the most recent NDR meeting occurs within one month before the earnings announcement. This decline is most pronounced among smaller firms, firms with high idiosyncratic volatility, and firms with Friday earnings announcements. These findings suggest that NDRs are mechanisms to convey earnings-specific information about forthcoming earnings. In the third essay I explore the relationship between NDRs, the medium of exchange used in M&As and the value created by this important corporate event. I show that NDR activity is important to understand the cross-sectional variation of the excess returns around M&As, and the bid premium. NDRs are also relevant to understand the medium of exchange. This relevance of NDR is more pronounced when the firms involved have higher levels of asymmetric information. My findings suggest that NDRs convey relevant information about acquiring and target firms, and this information affects the financing of M&As and the value created by these combinations. Taken together, the results reported in this dissertation highlight the relevance of the NDR as a mechanism to reveal information.

Die autokatalytische H 2 O 2 -Reduktion an Ag-ElektrodenEickes, Christian 31 May 2001 (has links)
Es konnte vor kurzem gezeigt werden, daß die Reduktion von Wasserstoffperoxid (H2O2) an Silber in Perchlorsäure (HClO4) über zwei parallele Wege verläuft. Die normale Reduktion wird bei einer Überspannung von -1,5 V beobachtet, während die zweite Reduktionsreaktion bei einer deutlich geringeren Überspannung bei -1,0 V stattfindet. Im zweiten Reaktionsweg wird OHad als instabile Zwischenspezies gebildet und wirkt katalytisch auf die H2O2-Reduktion. Daher wird angenommen, daß die zweite Reaktion eine autokatalytische Reduktion ist. Diese autokatalytische Reaktion wird nach einer ge-wissen Zeit deaktiviert, die von der Rotationsgeschwindigkeit der Elektrode abhängig ist. Sie kann wiedererlangt werden, wenn die Elektrode negativ polarisiert wird. In dieser Arbeit wurden Ex-situ-XPS-Messungen an herausgezogenen Ag(111)-Elektroden durch-geführt. Die Analyse führt zu dem Ergebnis, daß die Deaktivierung durch geringe Chlorid-Verunreinigungen verursacht wird. Elektrochemische Impedanzspektren werden zusammen mit numerischen Simulationen der Faradayschen Impedanz des autokata-lytischen Bereiches gezeigt. Diese basieren auf Annahmen von kinetischen Geschwin-digkeitsgesetzen, die früher postuliert wurden. Die experimentellen Daten stimmen sehr gut mit den Ergebnissen der theoretischen Rechnungen überein. Dies unterstützt den angenommen autokatalytischen Mechanismus. / Recently, it was shown that the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) reduction on silver in perchloric acid (HClO4) proceeds in two parallel paths. The normal reduction is observed at an overpotential of -1.5 V, whereas a second reduction reaction occurs at a significantly lower overpotential at -1.0 V. The second reaction involves the unstable intermediate OHad, which also acts as a catalyst. Hence, the second reaction has been proposed to be an autocatalytic one. This autocatalytic reaction is deactivated after a certain time that depends on the rotation speed of the electrode. It can be recovered if the electrode is negatively polarized. In this thesis work, ex-situ XPS measurements on emersed Ag(111) electrodes were conducted. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the deactivation is caused by a small amount of chloride contamination. Electrochemical impedance spectra are presented together with numerical simulations for the faradaic impedance in the autocatalytic region based on previously suggested kinetic rate laws. The experimental data fit well with the results of the theoretical calculations, which strongly supports the autocatalytic mechanism.

Motiv cesty do Itálie v literatuře NDR / Motif of the Italian Journey in the GDR literatureDušek Pražáková, Jana January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with a comparison of works written by GDR authors Hanns Cibulka, Waldtraut Lewin a Christine Wolter which deal with the motif of the journey to Italy. The analysis is based on spatial and intercultural theories, which are presented in the first part of the thesis. The genre of travelogue, the motif of the Italian journey in the German-language literature and political conditions for the creation and publication of travelogues in the GDR are also introduced. The core of the thesis is the comparison of eleven texts, especially travelogues, regarding the spatial and social dimension of travelling. The first aspect covers reflections of Goethe's Italian journey and the function of travelling, as well as the depiction of nature, urban space and architecture and the treatment of the garden motif. Regarding the second aspect, the author follows the narrative technics used in portraying the mediators between the travelling writers and the Italian culture, as well as in the depiction of tourists or strangers. An additional question of the study is whether (and possibly how) the writers reflect on the GDR regime against the background of the Italian scenery.

Foram clonados 3 receptores diferentes para a GAL, GALR1 e GALR3, inibitórios, e GALR2, excitatório. A distribuição da GAL em estruturas envolvidas com o controle das emoções, assim como estudos comportamentais sugerem que a GAL esteja envolvida na neurobiologia da ansiedade. O seu efeito parece depender tanto do sítio de administração quanto do subtipo de receptor envolvido. O núcleo dorsal da rafe (NDR) destaca-se pela presença de neurônios serotoninérgicos, importantes para mediar o efeito antidepressivo de diversos fármacos. Cerca de 40 % dos neurônios do NDR co-expressam serotonina (5-HT) e GAL. A ativação de GALR1 pelo peptídeo nessa estrutura diminui a taxa de disparo dos neurônios serotoninérgicos no NDR. Resultado prévio do nosso laboratório mostrou efeito ansiolítico da GAL intra-NDR de ratos expostos ao Labirinto em T elevado (LTE), mas nenhum efeito na fuga, relacionada ao pânico. Uma das limitações do modelo utilizado é que a fuga (latência para deixar o braço aberto) normalmente ocorre em poucos segundos, de forma que detectar o efeito panicogênico (menor latência de fuga) pode ser difícil. Dessa forma, um dos objetivos do presente estudo foi investigar o efeito da GAL intra-NDR de ratos em outro modelo experimental de pânico, a estimulação elétrica da matéria cinzenta periaquedutal dorsal (MCPD), mais sensível à detecção do efeito panicogênico. Além disso, considerando a existência de diferentes subtipos de receptores galaninérgicos (GALR1 e GALR2) no NDR com mecanismos de transdução opostos, inibitório e excitatório, respectivamente, é possível que a ativação de receptores GALR1 seja responsável por mediar o efeito ansiolítico/panicogênico, enquanto a ativação dos receptores GALR2 induza efeito ansiogênico/panicolítico. Nesse sentido, testamos essa hipótese usando um agonista seletivo para GALR1 (M617) e um agonista seletivo para GALR2 (AR-M1896) no NDR de ratos expostos ao LTE. A administração de M617 intra-NDR facilitou a esquiva inibitória nas doses de 1,0 e 3,0 nmoles, sugerindo um efeito tipo-ansiogênico, enquanto a administração do AR-M1896 intra-NDR na dose de 3,0nmoles prejudicou a esquiva inibitória, sugerindo um efeito tipo-ansiolítico, ambos sem alterar a atividade locomotora dos animais testados no campo aberto. Esses resultados são contrários à hipótese inicial. Também não foi observado efeito dessas drogas no comportamento de fuga do LTE. Posteriormente, foi testado o WAY100635 com o objetivo de verificar se a administração prévia deste antagonista 5-HT1A seria capaz de bloquear os efeitos observados com o agonista GALR2 nos animais submetidos ao LTE. O efeito ansiolítico do AR-M1896 foi atenuado pela administração prévia do WAY100635, na dose de 0,18nmol. Portanto esses resultados sugerem uma relação entre o efeito observado com o AR-M1896, a liberação de 5-HT e a ativação de receptores 5-HT1A. E finalmente, a GAL, na dose de 0,3nmol, aumentou de modo significativo, mas discreto, os limiares de salto e trote dos animais submetidos à estimulação elétrica da MCPD, sugerindo efeito panicolítico. Os resultados, como um todo, apontam que a GAL no NDR participa da mediação de respostas comportamentais relacionadas à ansiedade e, de forma menos evidente, ao Transtorno de Pânico. Os resultados mostram, ainda, que o efeito da GAL na ansiedade nesse subnúcleo depende do subtipo de receptor galaninérgico ativado. / Galanin (GAL) is a peptide present in the CNS of various mammals, including human being. Three different receptors have been cloned for the GAL, GALR1 and GALR3, inhibitory, and GALR2, excitatory. The distribution of GAL in structures involved in the control of emotions, and behavior studies suggest that GAL may be involved in the neurobiology of anxiety. The effect seems to depend on both the GAL administration site as involved receptor subtype. The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is distinguished by the presence of serotonergic neurons, important to mediate the antidepressant effect of several drugs. About 40% of the neurons of the DRN co-expressing serotonin and GAL. The activation of GALR1 in this structure decreases the firing rate of serotonergic neurons in the DRN. Previous results from our laboratory showed anxiolytic effect of GAL intra-DRN in rats exposed to the elevated T maze (ETM), but no effect on the escape, related to panic. One of the limitations of this model is that the escape (latency to leave the open arm) usually occurs within a few seconds, so that detect panicogenic effect (low latency escape) can be difficult. Thus, one aim of this study was to investigate the effect of intra-DRN rat GAL in another experimental model of panic, electrical stimulation of the dorsal periaqueductal gray matter (DPAG), more sensitive to detect panicogenic effect. Furthermore, given the existence of different subtypes of galaninergic receptors (GALR1 and GALR2) in the DRN with opposite transduction mechanisms, inhibitory and excitatory, respectively, it is possible that activation of GALR1 receptors is responsible for mediating the anxiolytic/panicogenic effect while activation of GALR2 receptors induces anxiogenic/panicolytic effect. Accordingly, we tested this hypothesis using a selective agonist for GALR1 (M617) and a selective agonist for GALR2 (AR-M1896) in the DRN in rats exposed to ETM. The administration of M617 1.0 and 3.0 nmol in the DRN facilitated inhibitory avoidance, suggesting an anxiogenic-like effect., while administration of AR-M1896 3,0nmoles in the DRN impaired the inhibitory avoidance, suggesting an anxiolytic-like effect, both without changing locomotor activity of animals tested in the open field. Also there was no effect of these drugs on the ETM escape behavior. Later, the pre-treatment with WAY100635 was tested in order to verify that administration of a 5-HT1A antagonist would be able to block the effects seen with GALR2 agonist in animals exposed to ETM. The anxiolytic effect of AR-M1896 was attenuated by the prior administration of WAY100635 at a dose of 0,18nmol. Therefore these results suggest a relationship between the observed effect with the AR-M1896, the release of 5-HT and activation of 5-HT1A receptors. And finally, the GAL 0,3nmol intra-DRN increased significantly the jumpping and trotting thresholds of animals submitted to electrical stimulation of the DPAG, suggesting a panicolytic effect. Together, the results show that the GAL in the DRN participates in the mediation of behavioral responses related to anxiety and, less clearly, to Panic Disorder. The results also shows that effect of GAL on anxiety depends galaninergic subtype receptor activated.

The interface between public administration and alliance politics the ANC-SACP-COSATU dialogue in South AfricaCedras, Jody P. January 2013 (has links)
After three hundred and forty-two years of colonialism and apartheid, South Africans of all walks of life experienced their first democratic elections in 1994. Now, as the country is at the precipice of the 5th democratic elections, it has known no government other than the African National Congress (ANC). The ANC has had landslide victories at the ballot box and always managed to secure an electoral vote of around 66%. These victories have not been by accident and have been carefully managed through an Alliance Pact with the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). The nature of the Alliance has infiltrated and influenced the character of contemporary South African public administration.
This study postulates vigorously that an alliance is not a coalition, but rather a partnership of ideological semblance and political decorum. This is most significantly expressed through the National Democratic Revolution (NDR). The study further elucidates the notion that the NDR remains the main political artery of the ANC and is seminal in the policy debates and critical platforms for each of the Alliance Partners.
The study affirms that irrespective of this convergence of ideology, there is periodic divergence on the leadership role of the ANC viz a viz that of the Alliance as the strategic centre for policy and governance issues. However, the ANC has over the years successfully challenged this assertion and through practice, led the Alliance in a politically driven manner that is predicated on consultation, due diligence and functional purpose. However, any member of the SACP or COSATU who desires to be part of parliament or the executive is required to be a member of the ANC. This, the study asserts, is the new formation of a political partnership. The study adumbrates that the SACP (even though it is registered as a political party with the Independent Electoral Commission) and COSATU do not contest elections separately. As part of the agreement, only the ANC contests elections and as such leads the Alliance. While COSATU and the SACP provide advice through Alliance structures on the deployment of cadres in the public service, the deployment committee is an ANC structure and the final decisions in regard to deployment resides with the ANC. This study has reinterpreted the dialogue within the Tripartite Alliance and how this has moulded the political nomenclature of the ANC, and the solidified impact on the way in which public administration is affected and effected in South Africa and vice versa. The study presents with equanimity how the practice, for example, of dual membership of two political organisations (ANC and SACP) enriches the public service and the policy-making process in a developmental state. It furthermore points to the imperative for a clear underlying ideology (as provided for through the NDR) and certainty as to who leads in such an arrangement. This study finds that it is through the Alliance structures that individual leaders within the Governing Party (ANC) are held to account for their actions – and after a hundred years of existence, the ANC and Alliance structures have managed to address the challenges of time, the pressures of political stress and the coalition of a “broad-based political church”. The logic of maintaining this political marriage and developmental triangulation, and also interpreting the essence of consolidating party manifestos to its membership, and further to preserving democratic principles, while at the same time translating this into the action of good governance in South Africa, is complex, yet manageable. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / am2013 / School of Public Management and Administration / unrestricted

This thesis deals with the translations of Czech prose published in the 1970s and 1980s by Volk und Welt, the second largest publishing house in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Using the publisher's and other paratexts, the empirical research aims to reconstruct the image of Czech literature that Volk und Welt helped to create. The issue under scrutiny draws methodological as well as theoretical inspiration from Anton Popovič, the Slovak translation scholar who inter alia postulated a theory of metatexts, André Lefevere and the Manipulation School, as well as Gérard Genette, who came up with a theory of paratexts. The publishing activities of Volk und Welt are painted against a broad political and cultural background. By analysing the publisher's reviews, required for the books to be approved for circulation in the GDR, as well as by dissecting other paratexts, the author uncovers strategies whereby the selected books of Czech literature found their way both to the reviewers and the general public.

(anglicky) This dissertation joins a conversation in German literary studies about East German literature's role, identity, and characteristic features. The thesis discusses the phenomenon of autonomy of the dramatic compositions written by Peter Hacks and Heiner Müller in the 1960s and 1970s in the GDR. The theoretic background of the research consists, among other things, of a short introduction to theoretical concepts developed by Kenneth Burke (particularly his New Rhetoric approach presented in The philosophy of literary form), Raymond Williams (including his cultural materialism), as well as Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno (Critical Theory). Furthermore, the dissertation deals with the idea of metatheatre, and it discusses elements of metadrama (Karin Vieweg-Marks) in the selected plays. The symbolic boundaries of research are the Berlin Wall's construction in 1961 and the expulsion of the German poet and songwriter Wolf Biermann in 1976. By analyzing the authors' concrete strategies, the thesis demonstrates that their plays articulate both the European literary tradition and the (East) German socialist project.

The main focus of interest is also the approach of the playwright to selected literary and theatrical genres as historical drama, Lehrstück and postdramatic theatre. The philosophical background of the analysis is based mainly on Walter Benjamin's essay On the Concept of History and his description of the painting Angelus Novus by Paul Klee. Furthermore, the thesis examines the methods of dramatization in Heiner Müller's plays.
