_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In this work we study the Edwards-Wilkinson equation (EWE) for growth[1]. The EWE is a linear equation which contains difusion and stochasticnoise. We present a methodology for solve the EWE which is simpler than that presented in the classical work of Nattermann [2]. We propose a generalization of the EWE to include the so-called memory. I.e. a growth dynamics where remote events of the past are important to dynamic events in the present time. We call this new equation the Edwards-Wilkinson equation with memory (EWEM). We investigate how the memories can change the critical growth exponents. Moreover, we obtain an analytical solution to describe the roughness evolution, and to determine how memories change the exponentsand its universality class.

Las Inquisiciones de Jorge Edwards

Schulz, Bernhardt R. 11 1900 (has links)
This work studies the extent to which the novels written by Jorge Edwards between 1973 and 1987 respond to the historical Chilean context that they seem to address, openly in some instances and evasively in others. It examines the way in which the novelist represents the Chilean situation under the dictatorship of Pinochet. In the novels, Los convidados de piedra (1978), Elmuseo de cera (1981), La muier imaginaria (1985) and Elanfitri On (1987), not only is the apparent decadence of asocial class revealed, but also the regenerative capacity of this class to perpetuate its dominance in society. The analysis of Edwards' works written during the dictatorship allows the possibility of comprehending the historical reality within the fiction through some themes: Chileanhistory, its culmination in the 1973 military coup and its aftermath, the decline of the bourgeois way of life, the status of women in Chile, and the problems of exile. To study the dialogue between the novel and society, and to reflect on the writer's role in facing the conflicts of his time, an eclectic methodology has been used which incorporates elements of narratology, Bakhtin's dialogism, sociology and history. These elements lead to further questioning rather than offering categorical answers; Edwards' own voice is used frequently to contrast or to clarify some aspects of his works. With the study of Edwards as an intellectual and with the review of his novels, this dissertation concludes that the Chilean writer shows a constant preoccupation with Chilean society. Moreover, his writings suggest that the causes of the dictatorship are anchored in an unresolved distant past. This explains the ironic gaze that questions the upper class and its origins from within. The voices of the novels are also ironic and reveal a rejection of the self-bestowed historical importance of the upper class. Finally, this study underlines the role the author has assigned to himself by converting the act of writing into an authentic personal mission. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

Market Economics vs. Christian Economics: Poverty in Jonathan Edwards's Writings

McGee, Matthew 01 January 2006 (has links)
Jonathan Edwards, an eighteenth-century theologian and preacher, is often most recognized for his teachings on hell and damnation. This stereotypical understanding prevents a proper understanding of the complexities and depth of subjects that Edwards did in fact address. Edwards preached and wrote extensively on other aspects of theology forming one of the most voluminous collections of written works in early America. Many have written analyzing Edwards theology and have traced his commentary on social, political, and economic ideas. There is however, a gap of scholarly research as to how Edwards's understanding of poor relief directly and indirectly shaped and influenced his social, political, and economic beliefs. Thus, this study has been devoted to making that connection. It specifically focuses on Edwards's understanding of the Christian's responsibility to aid the poor. It examines the works that Edwards's himself produced in order to find the basis for how Edwards's belief in aiding the poor affected his teachings on the market economy. In addition, it analyzes how Edwards utilized the language of the market in his critique of it. It is primarily focused on the works in which Edwards used economic language and ideas, and seeks to understand the source of such viewpoints.
