On the Porting of Nano-X and Its Integration with OpenGL ES

¡@¡@Embedded systems often use several ways to emulate floating-point computation, due to the limitation of hardware resources and the performance/cost consideration. The first part of this thesis will discuss how systems without hardware support emulate floating point operation, and the performance difference between whether hardware floating-point units exists or not, and finally the performance evaluation between the usage of floating-point and fixed-point. In the mean time, we will also discuss the porting process of Nano-X fixed-point version to the Versatile PB/926EJ-S development board. ¡@¡@Due to the growing market demand and the big improvement of hardware, there are several 3D-display applications beginning to be presented to the public. In order to develop 3D programs, we need a standard API to reduce our development time. OpenGL~ES is a royalty-free, cross-platform API for full-function 2D and 3D graphics on embedded systems developed by The Khronos Group. The second part of this thesis will discuss the implementation of EGL---the interface between windowing system and the OpenGL~ES rendering API---and the GLUT (OpenGL Utility Toolkits)-like library, in order to make OpenGL programmers' life easier.

Les canaux potassiques à deux domaines pore (K2P) sont des régulateurs principaux de l’excitabilité cellulaire car ils jouent un rôle central dans l’établissement et le maintien du potentiel de repos des cellules animales. Malgré leur rôle fondamental, peu d’informations sont connues sur les processus cellulaires qui contrôlent la fonction des canaux K2P in vivo. En particulier, nous ne connaissons que quelques facteurs qui contrôlent directement le nombre, l’activité et la localisation des K2P à la surface des cellules.Durant ma thèse, j’ai utilisé des stratégies d’ingénierie du génome que j’ai associé à des approches génétiques afin de caractériser le canal potassique EGL-23. Pour cela, j’ai réalisé un crible suppresseur du phénotype de défaut de ponte du mutant egl-23(n601) et un crible visuel sur le rapporteur fluorescent traductionnel egl-23::TagRFP-T. Grâce au reséquençagecomplet du génome, j’ai pu cloner 4 gènes impliqués dans la régulation du canal EGL-23. / Two-pore domain potassium channels (K2P) are major regulators of cell excitability, playing a central role in the establishment and maintenance of the resting potential of animal cells. Despite their fundamental role, little is known about the cellular processes that control K2P channels function in vivo. In particular, we know only few factors that directly control thenumber, activity, and localization of K2P on the cell surface.During my thesis, I used state-of-the art genome engineering technologies combined with genetic approaches to characterize the C. elegans potassium channel EGL-23. For this, I realized a phenotypic suppressor screen of the egg-laying defective mutant egl-23(n601) and a visual screen on an egl-23 translational fluorescent reporter. Using whole genome sequencing, I was able to clone for new genes involved in EGL-23 regulation

Molecular mechanism of the Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor, egl-15, and α-integrin receptor, ina-1, in gland cell migration during embryonic development of the Caenorhabditis elegans pharynx

Caenorhabditis elegans is a powerful tool to study cellular migration and morphogenesis during organ development. During pharynx development, the dorsal gland cell, g1p, is born in the anterior aspect of the pharyngeal primordium and undergoes a form of morphogenesis called retrograde extension. egl-15, the single Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor (FGFR) in C. elegans and ina-1, one of two α-integrin receptors, are both required for the proper extension or migration of g1p cell. Mutations in either egl-15 or ina-1 show similar gland cell over-migration defects where the gland cell body migrates past the terminal bulb and is located in proximity of the intestine. The kinase domain of EGL-15 was found to be required for migration and transgenic rescue strategies were used to determine the tissue of EGL-15 function. RNA interference was used to determine if egl-15 and ina-1 are functioning in the same pathway to regulate gland cell migration. / February 2015

On the Porting of Qt/Embedded and Its Integration with OpenGL ES

¡@¡@An embedded system has improved quickly in recent years and now functions like a small computer. Equipped with operating systems (OS), graphic user interfaces (GUI), and software developed for various platforms, an embedded system provides users with services more powerful and friendlier than ever. Qt/Embedded and OpenGL ES are an OS and a GUI developed for embedded systems. In this thesis, We integrated Qt/Embedded with OpenGL ES on a Versatile PB 92EJ-S and conducted various tests. ¡@¡@The Versatile PB 92EJ-S was equipped with ARM926EJ-S, an onboard chip capable of performing VFP9 vector floating operation. However, not all embedded systems are powered by a floating coprocessor. To make the test results applicable to all systems, We performed only fixed-point operations, a practice also improving the overall performance. In addition, to provide communications between OpenGL ES and Windows and interfaces for OpenGL ES to draw, We implemented EGL, a platform interface layer defined in OpenGL ES. Furthermore, We developed GLUT ES, a modification of GLUT, to make the embedded system compatible with Windows of different versions. Finally, We benchmarked the platform with programs developed by GLUT ES interfaces and OpenGL ES.

The Wnt signalling pathway is highly conserved signalling among Eukaryotes that regulates many cellular processes. In particular, it plays a role during invidual's development, but it is also important at later stage of life, when it is involved in maintaining homeostasis in the body. Recent studies have shown that phosphatidylinositol-4-phospahte 5-kinase (PIP5K), which is key to the production of phosphatidylinositol (4,5)-bisphosphate in the cell, is also involved in regulation of the canonical Wnt signalling cascade. In mammalian cells, a model has been described in which PIP5K is involved in signal transduction in a Wnt receiving cell. We decided to verify the involvement of PIP5K in the regulation of Wnt signalling also in Caenorhabditis elegans, an excellent model organism for study of signalling pathways, and thus contribute to a better understanding of this evolutionarily conserved pathway. In this work, we found that decreased expression of PPK-1/PIP5K in wild type animals does not result in Wnt signalling disruption. Nevertheless, in conditions, where the activity of Wnt signalling is already reduced, decrease in PPK-1 levels leads to defective migration of the QL neuroblast daughter cell.
