VLSI Design and Implementation of Embedded Zerotree Wavelet Image CODEC with Digital Watermarking

The paper proposes that Embedded Zreotree Wavelet algorithm and the architecture of the modified EZW algorithm will have the property of regularity, modularity ,and scalablity, and also posses the function , which can allow a detected watermark to be embedded. The methods to realize the algorithm and the function of watermark are to analyze the theory of algorithm and the order of output and input data and then to use queue and stack, the unit of memory, and the control of circuit. The modified EZW architecture needs a half less memory units than the original one, and functions nearly as effective as the original architecture. Besides, this paper points out that the whole architecture of the transform CODEC system can be applied properly to HDTV, MPEG-4 system, or QoS network.

Šiame darbe pateikiama trumpa efektyvaus vaizdų kodavimo metodų ir požiūrių apžvalga. Susipažįstama su diskrečiosiomis (Haaro, Daubechies) bangelių transformacijomis bei įvertinamos jų specifinės savybės: diskretaus bangelių spektro koeficiento sąsaja su vaizdo fragmentu, nulinių medžių egzistavimas spektre. Darbo tikslas – įvertinus diskrečiųjų bangelių transformacijos savybes, algoritmizuoti, realizuoti ir ištirti vieną perspektyviausių progresyviojo skaitmeninių vaizdų kodavimo algoritmų EZW (Embedded-Zerotree-Wavelet). / This paper discusses specific properties of the discrete orthogonal wavelet transform, namely: relationships between the wavelet coefficients and image fragments, existence of zerotrees in the discrete wavelet spectrum of an image, etc. In parallels, the progressive image encoding idea and an efficient image encoding/decoding algorithm EZW (Embedded-Zerotree-Wavelet), based on the discrete wavelet (Haar, Daubechies) transform, are presented. Some preliminary experimental analysis results are discussed.

Image Compression by Wavelet Transform.

Digital images are widely used in computer applications. Uncompressed digital images require considerable storage capacity and transmission bandwidth. Efficient image compression solutions are becoming more critical with the recent growth of data intensive, multimedia-based web applications. This thesis studies image compression with wavelet transforms. As a necessary background, the basic concepts of graphical image storage and currently used compression algorithms are discussed. The mathematical properties of several types of wavelets, including Haar, Daubechies, and biorthogonal spline wavelets are covered and the Enbedded Zerotree Wavelet (EZW) coding algorithm is introduced. The last part of the thesis analyzes the compression results to compare the wavelet types.

Lokaliai progresyvaus vaizdų kodavimo metodo realizacija ir tyrimas / Realization and analysis of locally progressive encoding method of images

Skaitmeniniai vaizdai yra plačiai naudojami kompiuterių taikomosiose programose. Nesuspaustų skaitmeninių vaizdų laikymui atmintyje reikia žymiai daugiau talpos ir spartesnio (didesnio pralaidumo) tinklo galimybių jų perdavimui tinklu. Efektyvūs vaizdų suspaudimo sprendimai tampa kritiškesni dėl pastaruoju metu didelio duomenų augimo intensyvumo, multimedijos pagrindu kuriamų tinklo programų. Šiame darbe pristatoma nauja lokaliai progresyvaus vaizdų kodavimo idėja (procedūra). Procedūra grindžiama specifinėmis Haaro bangelių savybėmis bei progresyvųjį vaizdų kodavimą realizuojančiu EZW algoritmu. Taip pat apžvelgiamos kitų diskrečiųjų transformacijų ypatybės, praktinis jų pritaikymas pramoninėje, mokslinėje srityse. Preliminarūs eksperimento rezultatai rodo, jog diskrečioji Haaro transformacija ir progresyvus vaizdų glaudinimo algoritmas EZW skaitmeninių vaizdų spaudimui nėra efektyvus. Efektyvumo didinimui pasirinktas tikslinis vaizdo spektro koeficientų modifikavimas, kas leido pasiekti kur kas geresnių kodavimo rezultatų. / Digital images are widely used in computer applications. In this paper, a novel locally progressive image encoding idea (procedure) is presented. The procedure explores both specific properties of Haar wavelets and the EZW algorithm originally used for progressive image encoding. Properties of various discrete transforms and areas of their practical applicability are discussed too. Preliminary experimental results show that the joint application of the discrete Haar transform and the EZW algorithm to locally progressive compression of digital images is not effective. To increase efficiency of the approach (idea), some modifications are proposed. In particular, appropriately chosen enlargement of Haar spectral coefficients led to much better overall performance, unfortunately, at the expense of time expenditures.

This thesis deals with image compression using wavelet, contourlet and shearlet transformation. It starts with quick look at image compression problem a quality measurement. Next are presented basic concepts of wavelets, multiresolution analysis and scaling function and detailed look at each transform. Representatives of algorithms for coeficients coding are EZW, SPIHT and marginally EBCOT. In second part is described design and implementation of constructed library. Last part compare result of transforms with format JPEG 2000. Comparison resulted in determining type of image in which implemented contourlet and shearlet transform were more effective than wavelet. Format JPEG 2000 was not exceeded.

Both JPEG and JPEG 2000 standards are introduced. Second part of this document analyzes and describes implementation of image compression tool including inovations and optimalizations. The third part is dedicated to comparison and evaluation of achievements.
