Thesis (MPhil (Religion and Culture) (Practical Theology and Missiology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Green spirituality as found in popular media such as films can be used to develop an ecological ethic in theological reflection and praxis and serve as a platform in a multi-sectoral and multi-pronged response to the ecological crisis. By examining the films Avatar, Emerald Forest, Dances with Wolves, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and the animated films of Hayao Miyazaki, ecological and spiritual themes can be drawn from the text and applied as contemporary examples of 'green spirituality'. In the first chapter I articulate and describe the research problem, whether green spirituality is found in popular media and if so, could it be used to develop an ecological ethic in theological reflection and praxis. This discussion includes the aims of the study and the description of the research methodology used in the study, as well as the delimitations of the study. In the second chapter I define some of the key terms: spirituality, green spirituality, ecological crisis, ecological ethic, and present a brief overview of the theoretical concepts, ecofeminism, and deep ecology, within whose context this study takes place. This chapter will include the literature survey that informs this study. In the third chapter I present the data, namely the green spirituality found in media such as the films Avatar, Emerald Forest, Dances with Wolves, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and the films of Hayao Miyazaki. The films are summarised and evaluated according to the green spirituality and ecological themes presented. Four signifiers are identified to be present in the films: visual, cognitive, spiritual and communal. In the fourth chapter I present my interpretation of the data, as informed by scholarly sources, and also describe the relevance of the data in the faith traditions and the positions taken by faith traditions with regards to the ecological crisis. I also present some practical suggestions for responses in theological praxis. In chapter five I present my conclusion. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'Groen spiritualiteit', soos gevind in populêre media soos films kan gebruik word om 'n ekologiese etiek in teologiese refleksie en praxis te ontwikkel en kan dien as 'n platform in 'n multi-sektorale en multi-fokus reaksie op die ekologiese krisis. Deur die films Avatar, Emerald Forest, Dances with Wolves, The Day the Earth Stood Still, en die films van Hayao Miyazaki te ondersoek, kan ekologiese en spirituele temas onderskei word en toegepas word as kontemporêre voorbeelde van 'groen spiritualiteit'. In die eerste hoofstuk noem en beskryf ek die navorsingsprobleem, naamlik die moontlikheid om groen spiritualiteit wat te vinde is in die populêre media soos films, te gebruik om 'n ekologiese etiek te ontwikkel in teologiese refleksie en praxis. Hierdie bespreking sluit die doelwitte en beperkings van die studie in en beskryf die navorsingsmetodologie wat gebruik word. In die tweede hoofstuk gee ek 'n paar definisies van sleutel begrippe: spiritualiteit, groen spiritualiteit, ekologiese krisis, ekologiese etiek, sowel as 'n kort oorsig van die teoretiese konsepte soos ekofeminisme en 'deep ecology' waarin die studie omraam. Hier sluit ek in wat ek verstaan onder die sleutel konsepte om die studie te definieër binne die raamwerk van die navorsing. Hierdie hoofstuk sluit die literatuur oorsig in. In die derde hoofstuk gee ek die data, naamlik die groen spiritualiteit gevind in populêre media soos die films Avatar, Emerald Forest, Dances with Wolves, The Day the Earth Stood Still, en die films van Hayao Miyazaki. Die films word opgesom en ge-evalueer volgens die groen spiritualiteit en ekologiese temas teenwoordig. In die vierde hoofstuk beskryf ek my interpretasie van die data, soos voorgestel ook deur geleerde bronne en die geloofstradisies. Ek maak ook 'n paar praktiese voorstelle in teologiese praxis. In hoofstuk vyf gee ek my gevolgtrekking.

Those conceptions come of the fact that there is an ecological and social crisis of global dimensions. This crisis is seen as a consequence of the modern paradigm of disjunction-separation-simplification of the knowledge that generated dichotomies or opposition such as: men/nature, subject/object, body/mind, feelings/reason. In contrast to this dominant paradigm Ecological/Complex where everything is interconnected with everything in a complex relationship. For this intent it was developed theoretical-interpretative analysis from the bibliographic research of the writings of Boff, and especially those that treat post 1992 ethic and ecology, and those of Morin that treat the complexity presents in the concepts that transit through theoretical elaborations of these two authors, such as: reconnection, order-disorder, organization-disorganization, integral ecology and deep ecology, information/sub-information, global ethic and ecology ethic, and others that serve as basis for formulating the new ecological paradigm of complexity. Regarding the cases it was found that the proposal of a new World Ethos is concretized in Leonardo‟s Boff Ecological Ethic in part to be a dialogical process in construction. As the research confirms as the presence of the Morin‟s Complexity Theory as theoretical support direct and indirect in the conceptions of Boff Ecological Ethic, can be said that research confirms the existence of a number of shares and theoretical approaches / As concepções teóricas desenvolvidas na presente pesquisa visam estabelecer os possíveis vínculos entre a ética ecológica de pretensões planetárias e globais de Leonardo Boff com a teoria da complexidade de Edgar Morin. Tais concepções partem da constatação de que há uma crise ecológica e social de dimensões planetárias. Tal crise é vista como consequência do paradigma moderno da disjunção-separação-simplificação dos conhecimentos que gerou dicotomias ou oposições tais como: Homem/Natureza, sujeito/objeto, corpo/mente, sentimento/razão. Em contraste a este paradigma dominante os autores pesquisados propõem um novo paradigma Ecológico/Complexo onde tudo está interligado com o todo numa relação de complexidade. Para tal intento foram desenvolvidas análises teórico-interpretativas a partir da pesquisa bibliográfica dos escritos de Boff, em especial aqueles que tratam da ética e da ecologia pós 1992, e aqueles de Morin que tratam da complexidade em que se apresentam os conceitos que transitam pelas elaborações teóricas destes dois autores, tais como: religação, ordem-desordem, organização-desorganização, ecologia integral e ecologia profunda, informação/auto-organização, ética planetária e ética ecológica, dentre outros que servem de fundamentos para formulação de um novo paradigma ecológico da complexidade. Em relação às hipóteses verificou-se que a proposta de um novo Ethos Mundial se concretiza na Ética Ecológica de Leonardo Boff parcialmente por ser um processo dialógico em construção; a pesquisa confirma a presença da teoria da complexidade de Morin como suporte teórico direto e indireto nas concepções da Ética Ecológica de Boff

A presente tese trata da concepção de projeto sustentável para a cidade - o caso de Uberlândia, Minas Gerais. A hipótese que se coloca é que o desenho ambiental urbano, em um projeto sustentável, além de responder às necessidades básicas da cidade de habitar, locomover, trabalhar e recrear, promove, também, a conexão sociocultural com a natureza, possibilitando o desenvolvimento da consciência e da identidade cultural de um lugar e de um povo. E, a partir da visão de mundo ecológica, tem o veio d\'água como elemento-chave estruturador do desenho da cidade. É uma abordagem em que a questão reside em colocar a o desenho ambiental urbano no centro da produção da cidade. Em síntese, trata-se de destacar o projeto sustentável como fio condutor da concepção e organização territorial, contrapondo aos modelos funcionais, administrativos e econômicos, cuja aplicação tem levado o ambiente urbano a processos intensos de degradação, de fragmentação e de insustentabilidade. Tem como premissa filosófica a dimensão ecológica, que estabelece os pilares para o pensamento sobre a organização das cidades. Nessa dimensão, está a visão de mundo ecológica, os princípios das teorias não lineares (Morin, 1990), a sustentabilidade e a ética ecológica. A partir dessa visão, a dimensão ambiental (McHarg, 1969; Spirn, 1995; Hough, 2004) se estrutura em dois eixos de análise: o ambiente biótico e o urbano. No biótico, destacam-se os links ecológicos como mediadores das interconexões ecológicas em que a água é elemento fundamental a existência da vida. No urbano, os vínculos antropossociais são assinalados dos como estruturantes da dinâmica urbana e por meio da identidade cultural e urbanidade, em que o sentido de pertencimento e pertinência é fortalecido pela condição de conectividade e pela qualidade da imagem urbana estabelecidas na dimensão da teia urbana. O estudo da cidade de Uberlândia visa aplicar tais premissas teóricas na leitura ambiental e, ao mesmo tempo, auxiliar no processo de instrumentalização do processo projetual do projeto sustentável para a cidade. / This thesis deals with the conception of sustainable design for the city - the case study of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais. The hypothesis that arises is that the urban environmental design in sustainable design, beyond responding the basic needs of the city as live, move, work and leisure, promotes also the socio and cultural connection with nature, enabling the development of consciousness and the cultural identity. And, from the ecological world-view, has the watercourses as a key design, an element-key structuring the city design conception. This is an approach in which consist to centralize the urban environmental design in central urban space production. In summary, it is to highlight the sustainable design as a conductor of territorial conception and organization, contrasting the functional models, administrative and economics ones, which has been taken the urban environmental to intense process of degradation, fragmentation and un-sustainability. It has as philosophical premise the ecology dimension, which establishes the cornerstones to the thinking about cities organization. In this dimension there is the ecological world-view, the non linear theories (Morin, 1990), the sustainability and ecological ethic. From this vision, the environmental dimension (McHarg, 1969; Spirn, 1995; Hough, 2004) structures itself in two axes analysis: the biotic and urban environment. At biotic ambient, it highlights the ecological links as mediators of ecological interconnections in that the water is the fundamental element to existence of life. At urban ambient, the social and cultural ties are highlighted as structures of urban dynamic and through the culture identity and urbanity, in which the sense of belonging and relevance is strengthened by the connectivity condition and by the urban image established in the urban web dimension. The case study of Uberlandia city aims to apply such theoretical premises in reading the environmental panorama and, at the same time, to assist the instrumentalization of city sustainable design process.
