O foco central de análise são os agricultores articulados ao complexo fumageiro sendo que as delimitações teóricas situam-se na economia e agricultura sociológica. A contribuição principal é mostrar que o fenômeno da pluriatividade e o trabalho em tempo parcial, largamente estudado pelos pesquisadores internacionais e nacionais no meio rural e na agricultura diversificada está, também, presente na agricultura articulada ao complexo fumageiro gaúcho. A metodologia utilizada foi a aplicação de um questionário cuja posterior análise permitiu que se mensurasse a pluriatividade e se mostrasse suas características bem como outros aspectos, tais como as condições gerais dos estabelecimentos a as condições de habitação e nível de vida das famílias. O exame das principais mudanças verificadas na dinâmica do complexo finnageiro mostrou que, a partir do final da década de 1960 e início da década de 1970. houve uma desnacionalização das empresas fumageiras na região. A investigação das mudanças operadas na região e o aporte teórico utilizado permitiram compreender, à problemática que envolve a formação do preço e comercialização do fumo em folha no curto e longo prazos tendo em conta os agentes sociais envolvidos, a análise das instituições e mecanismos presentes nas negociação e do desenvolvimento do setor fumicultor. Além disso, forneceram elementos que permitiram entender melhor o processo atual de inserção sócio-econômica das famílias que se circuncreve a uma reprodução da exploração agrícola ainda em grande medida dependente da produção para o autocosumo. de uma orientação majoritaria de pluriatividade tradicional e não-agrícola desqualificada / Abstract: The thesis examines the present situation and the tobacco culture perspectives in the principal tobacco producer region of Brazil and of the state of Rio Grande do Sul: the Rio Pardo valley. The central focus of analyses are the farmers articulated to the tobacco complex being that the theoretical delimitations are situated in the sociological economy and agriculture. The principal contribution is to show that the pluriativity phenomenon and the part-time fanning, widely studied by the intemational and national researchers in the rural field and in the diversified agricultme is, also, present in the agriculture articulated to the 'gaucho' tobacco complex.The methodology used was the application of a questionnaire whose posterior analyses allowed to measure the pluriativity and show its characteristics and other aspects such as general conditions of the establishments and the habitation conditions and life leveI of the families. The exam of the principal changes verified in the dynamic of the tobacco complex, showed that since the late 1960's and the early 1970's, there has been a denationalization of the tobacco companies in the region. The investigation of the changes operated in the region and the theoretical contribution used, allowed to understand the problematic that involves the formation of the price and tobacco in leaf commercialization in short and long time, having in account the social agents involved, the analyses of the institutions and present mechanisms in the negotiation and the development of the tobacco sector. Besides, it offered the elements which allowed to better understand the present process of families social-economic insertion that precincts itself to a reproduction of the agriculture exploration in great measure dependent of the production for self consume, of an major orientation of disqualified traditional and non-agricultural pluriativity / Doutorado / Politica Economica / Doutor em Ciências Econômicas
