Modeling Of The Biomass Power Generation And Techno-Economic Analysis

Methuku, Shireesha 11 December 2009 (has links)
Biomass is one of the renewable energy sources being used widely for power generation. This research work includes developing a comprehensive model for a biomass based power generation system as well as analyzing the technical, economical, and environmental impacts. The research objectives include modeling of the system, stability studies, and sensitivity analysis using MATLAB/Simulink. A mathematical model for the gas turbine has been developed and successfully interconnected with the distribution network. Transient stability of the power system has been carried out for four bus and six bus test case systems. Maximum rotor speed deviation, oscillation duration, rotor angle, and mechanical power have been taken as the stability indicators to analyze the system characteristics. Additionally, the sensitivity of the system to the changes of gas turbine parameters has been investigated under balanced and unbalanced fault scenarios. The economical and environmental impacts of the biomass have been analyzed using HOMER software developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The net present cost of the four biomass resources namely agricultural resources, forest residues, animal waste, and energy crops were obtained and the comparison of the costs of the biomass fuels as well as the diesel have been carried out. To investigate the environmental impact, carbon emissions of the different biomass fuels have been explored using HOMER.

Impactos socioeconômicos da expansão do setor sucroenergético: uma análise espacial dinâmica sobre o bem-estar social no Estado de São Paulo (2000-2008) / Impact of sugarcane sector expansion on social-economical concerns: a dynamic spatial analysis about social welfare in Sao Paulo State (2000-2008)

Satolo, Luiz Fernando 29 August 2012 (has links)
The Brazilian sugarcane sector experienced an intense expansion in Sao Paulo State during the 2000s. The aim of this study is to evaluate the socioeconomic impacts of such expansion, based on the social welfare representation proposed by Deaton & Muellbauer (2009). The impacts of sugarcane sector expansion over the average per capita income and over its distribution between Sao Paulo States municipalities were estimated through a dynamic spatial panel developed from the decomposition of per capita income into its main determinants proposed by Barros et al. (2004). Besides the municipal rate of adults in the population, rate of workforce employment and average wage, two other variables were included in the model to control regional differences observed in Sao Paulo States economy: rate of workforce employment in agriculture and farming A&F and its respective average wage. Additionally, in order to determine the socioeconomic impacts of the sugarcane sector expansion, the share of A&F in the municipal area, the share of agriculture in A&F area, the share of sugarcane in agriculture area and a dummy for cities with mills in operation were also included in the model. The balanced panel for the 645 cities in Sao Paulo State ranges from 2000 to 2008. The results of the system generalized method of moments GMM-SYS highlight that per capita GDP presents positive lags in both time and space. The estimated direct and indirect effects indicate that sugarcane sector expansion had a positive impact over the average per capita income and, then, also over its distribution throughout Sao Paulo State since sugarcane sector expansion occurred mainly in cities with per capita GDP lower than the States average. Accordingly, the conclusion of this study is that sugarcane sector expansion that occurred between 2000 and 2008 presented a positive socioeconomic impact in Sao Paulo State.

Recycling Waste Solar Panels (c-Si & CdTe) in Sweden

Nekouaslazadeh, Alireza January 2021 (has links)
Solar energy industries are one of the fastest-growing industries in the global energy market. Between 2018 and 2019, installed capacity in Sweden increased by 70%. This is due to a combination of declining PV module and inverter costs, as well as  increased conversion to fossil-free energy production to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, solar PVs have a 25-year life span, and soon many deployed PVs would soon reach their end of life (EoL), it is, therefore, important to organize for the EoL of PVs in order to recover precious resources and recycle PV modules in a sustainable manner. Currently, less than 10% of global solar cell waste is recycled, due to the lack of incentives for recycling in most countries. In the European Union, used-up modules are governed by the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive, which requires the collection of 85% of solar cell waste, with at least 80% of the waste being prepared for reuse or recycling. Solar cell waste has not amounted to significant volumes in Sweden, due to the lack of no known systems for recycling. Used-up modules are currently collected and managed as electronic waste in one of two approved collection systems in Sweden. The aim of this thesis is to analyze and assess methods of recycling waste solar panels in Sweden and is it economically viable to set up a solar waste recycling center before it reaches the right amount of waste. Moreover, the main focus is on the analysis and comparison of the environmental impacts of various recycling methods for crystalline silicon (c-Si) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) panels. To recycle solar panel waste, the elements of these panels must be assessed from both an economic point of view as well as environmental impacts. Today, the most common PV panels in the global market and also Sweden are c-Si and CdTe types. The results showed except for the pyrolysis method, the environmental impacts of both c-Si and CdTe PV panels from the thermal-based recycling methods, are lower than chemical methods. Furthermore, the extraction of Al, Si, and glass from c-Si and the extraction of glass from CdTe has a less environmental impact than the current techniques used in the recycling of PV panels. Finally, in this study, we revealed which materials can be prioritized for maximum economic and environmental advantages from recycling. In c-Si modules, these are Ag, Al, Si, and glass and in CdTe modules, these are Te, Cu, and glass. Currently, investing in a new solar module recycling center in Sweden is not economically viable. Because the possibility of such an investment requires economic and political incentives. Given that by 2042 the volume of Swedish solar waste will not reach the minimum level of profitability to build a new specialized center for the recycling of solar modules, the best decision is to modify the existing plants in Sweden to recover expensive and vital materials.
