O estudo tem por objetivo mostrar a evolução da arquitetura industrial de Caxias do Sul, no período de 1880 a 1950. Primeiramente, faz uma abordagem histórica dos edifícios fabris no mundo, no Brasil e no Rio Grande do Sul, buscando identificar princípios ou esquemas formais básicos e significados simbólicos comuns a esses edifícios, que, como referenciais, possam ter influenciado a produção local. Portanto, a abordagem histórica é desenvolvida a partir dos referenciais teóricos de tipo e caráter. Inicia a abordagem do objeto de estudo com uma breve análise da evolução físico-administrativa de Caxias do Sul, objetivando identificar um possível condicionamento da morfologia urbana sobre a tipologia construída. A partir daí, enfoca a evolução das fábricas caxienses em três períodos principais – de 1880 a 1910, de 1910 a 1930 e de 1930 a 1950, baseando-se na evolução econômica e urbana da cidade e na constância tipológica dos edifícios nesses períodos. Por fim, com os parâmetros estabelecidos anteriormente, busca explicar a natureza dos edifícios industriais de Caxias do Sul, relacionando seu tipo e caráter com a influência de seus referentes históricos, com a estrutura organizacional da forma urbana e com a estrutura social. / This study has the target to show the evolution of the industrial architeture in Caxias do Sul from 1880 to 1950. At frist, it makes a historical aproach of industrial buildings throughout the world, in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul, attempting to identify principles of basic formal schemes and symbolic meanings common to these buildings that may have influenced, as references, the local production. Therefore, the historical approach is developed fron theorical references of the type and character. The aproach of the studied object starts with a brief analyses of physical and administrative evolution of Caxias do Sul, searching to identify a possible conditioning of urban morphology open the tipology built. Fron that on, it focus on the evolution of the factories in Caxias within three main periods – from 1880 to 1910, from 1910 to 1930 and from 1930 to 1950, based on the city´s economic and urban evolution and on the tipological constancy of the buildings during these periods. Finally, with the parametres previously stabi lished, it searches to explain the nature of the buildings in Caxias do Sul, relating their type and character along with the influence of their historical references, with the organizatonal structure of urban form as well as its social structure.
