Os informantes de pesquisa se constituíram de quatro turmas de diferentes níveis de proficiência e faixa etária, de um instituto binacional de ensino de língua inglesa. São vários fatores, entre eles socais, lingüísticos e afetivos, que interferem no processo convencional de aprendizagem de LE por parte do adulto. Os professores das turmas acima citadas também foram informantes de pesquisa, visto que a postura do professor também exerce uma forte influência na decisão do aluno adulto continuar ou não no curso de línguas. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research, a qualitative and quantitative study, discusses the reasons why adult students cancel or simply withdraw from their English classes, or, on ther other hand, continue the process of learning the language. Four groups of different levels of proficiency and age, from a binational institute were observed by the researcher. When it comes to the adult learning, factors such as cognitive and emotional ones affect the conventional process of learning a foreign language. The teachers were also observed and interviewed once their posture can also influence the students’decision of canceling the course or not.
