This research analyses the way some families experienced the challenge caused by the birth of an abnormal child. Four case studies were investigated (one of them has three families involved) and they all represent histories of success. In this study, I demonstrated how these families were able to promote innovatory changes in order to help their exceptional children overcome many of their complex problems by developing social integration and inclusion. The families and their special children were studied in a daily life and were observed in relation to the services they received in different areas (health, education, habitation, recreation, religion), after principles of ethics had been taken care of. This study was based in an ethnographic perspective and included the biological, psychic, social and cultural areas. A triangulation of methods was used in a qualitative approach in way which was formed a kaleidoscope in formations and impressions, producing a rich exchange of experiences and Knowledge, in an interdisciplinary perspective. I concluded that the families are a rich source of wisdom and knowledge. The mentally disabled persons assumed gigantic proportions by challenging their limitations and overcoming expectations projected on them. The results showed the benefits achieved by the help of professionals, teachers and institutions and by the intervention of health and education Brazilian politics. It also gave visibility to some unreasonable issues that appeared in the professional and institutional practices.
