Several authors contribute to a reflection on this theme, attending to the specificity of the work with learners, due to the fact that it isn t a question of compensation work, or substitution, but a recovery of their humanity, a work of awareness, of lifetime education. With the LDB 9394/96 and the politics of treatment methods, some actions get triggered, but with results that still do not solve the demand, be this on number or on financial and formative investments. Although the principles are in official documents and curricula, they are theories that need study and reflection to becoming actions, due to the fact that the public administration and the teachers still act through regular education methods. The objective of this work is to make an analysis of the treatment of this modality of education in the city of Mauá, located in the metropolitan region of the state of São Paulo. By the analysis of this city, its population, demands and forms of treatment of this modality, and from official documents, statistic data, interviews with learners, we will reflect about the EJA that the city of Mauá has and the EJA that the city of Mauá needs / A modalidade de ensino de Educação de Jovens e Adultos requer reflexões, principalmente no aspecto histórico, que ressaltem sua importância enquanto dívida social histórica às pessoas excluídas do direito ao estudo. Diversos autores contribuem para a reflexão dessa temática, atentando para a especificidade do trabalho com os educandos, porque não se trata de trabalho de compensação, de suplência, mas de recuperação de humanidade, de conscientização, de educação ao longo da vida. Com a LDB 9394/96 e as políticas de formas de atendimento, desencadearam-se algumas ações, cujos resultados ainda não atendem a demanda, seja em número ou em investimentos financeiros e formativos. Embora os princípios estejam nos documentos oficiais e nos currículos, são teorias que necessitam de estudo e reflexão para transformarem-se em ação, pois a administração pública e os professores atuam nos moldes de atendimento do ensino regular. Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar o atendimento dessa modalidade de ensino no município de Mauá, localizado na região metropolitana do Estado de São Paulo. Por meio de análise do município, sua população, demanda e forma de atendimento a essa modalidade, e a partir de documentos oficiais, dados estatísticos, entrevistas com educandos refletiremos sobre a EJA que Mauá tem e a EJA que Mauá precisa
