A study of relationships between ethical decisions of counseling psychologists and ethics education factors

Unknown Date (has links)
Few reports are available which empirically discuss the value of ethics education for professional psychologists. The present study addressed that issue through a survey of 500, randomly selected, counseling psychologists. The study examined relationships between ethical decisions, ethics education factors and background characteristics of psychologists when faced with certain ethical dilemmas situations. / Ethical decisions were determined through use of Professional Dilemma Survey (Haas, 1986), with responses being rated by the American Psychological Association Ethics Committee. The Professional Dilemma survey allowed psychologists to indicate preferred resolutions to a series of ten vignettes, each representing a potential problem of professional ethics. Psychologists were also to identify educational factors associated with their responses. / Three hundred thirty seven Professional Dilemma Surveys were returned, of which 276 were correctly filled out and used in the study. Seven research questions were explored in order to evaluate relationships between ethical decisions, ethics education factors and background characteristics of psychologists, in the various ethical problems. Significant relationships were found in regard to each question. Overall, the findings pointed toward the tendency of younger, recently trained psychologists to identify formal means of ethics education, such as graduate training, as resources in resolving ethical dilemmas. / Results of the study emphasize the importance of formal ethics training, giving support to the impact of the APA mandate for ethics education. However, the research findings also point to the need for the profession of psychology to identify ethical reasoning processes for consistent application of ethical principles. Further research is needed to determine methods of preservice and inservice ethics education that are most related to professional ethical decisions. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 49-04, Section: A, page: 0732. / Major Professor: Stephen A.
