Conversations : hermeneutic inquiry unearthing pedagogic relationsWood, Kevin, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Education January 2006 (has links)
What is conversation and how is it related to pedagogic relations? Conversations: Hermeneutic Inquiry Unearthing Pedagogic Relations utilizes Hans-Georg Gadamger's notion of conversation as "the art of seeing things in the unity of an aspect" (Gadamer, 2004, p.368). This definition for conversation is a model for the pedagogic relation where the teacher and student experience education together, side-by-side. This thesis explores the themes of pedagogy, vulnerability and living or Being in the context of teaching. Hermeneutic inquiry -a mode, or art of interpretation-is utilized to inquire into one teacher's experience with students to unearth a deeper understanding of the pedagogic relation. The hermeneutic questions that have informed the inquiry are: 1)What is the nature of the pedagogic relation? 2)What is the nature of the teacher-student relationship? 3)What is the significance of vulnerability in teaching? 4)What is the effect of society on the pedagogic relation? Textual fragments or narrative reconstructions of conversations with students and parents are the site of the study. The study itself employs Gadamer's Truth and Method as a tool of inquiry and also explores the writings on pedagogy of David Smith, David Jardine and Max van Manen. This thesis addresses the nature of a teacher being with another, namely the student and how the teacher must have a measure of self-understanding to nurture the pedagogic relation. The teacher who engages in conversation with his/her students will undoubtedly experience a measure of vulnerability as a direct result of the relationship. The thesis concludes with writing about how hermeneutics is a mode of self-understanding and change. / viii, 129 leaves ; 28 cm.

A metacognitive affective approach to values educationJohnson, Philip Gregory Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explores the way a skilled teacher developed and implemented my idea that metacognition could be applied to affect as well as cognition in values education. This idea suggests that teachers can help primary school students to understand the role that affect has played in the development of their values through socialization, and that through this understanding the students may develop a greater capacity to question and develop their values in the future. I call this teaching idea the metacognitive-affective approach to values education. / The review of the literature explores a range of theory, research findings and practical teaching ideas. It looks at the psychological, social psychological, sociological, philosophical, and educational, literature to establish links between affect and cognition in the development and education of values. It also looks at literature on metacognition to establish ways in which metacognition could be focussed on affect and values. / The teacher developed her own understanding of my original idea, and developed, implemented, and evaluated, a teaching intervention based on her interpretation of the idea in a history unit of study over a ten week period with her grade six class. Data were derived from: (i) interviews with the teacher about her understanding of the idea, the concepts, and the issues, before, during and after the implementation; (ii) observations of the teacher’s implementation of the approach in the unit of study, and (iii) the teacher’s written reflections. / The research was an action research-oriented, evaluative case-study using an interpretive, naturalistic approach based on the constructivist paradigm. It employed a hermeneutic philosophical stance that emphasises the way prior understandings and prejudices shape the interpretive process. / The results of the research showed the metacognitive-affective approach to have potential, but, as there was insufficient time to fully implement it, there are still major questions about ways of implementing it, about its practicality, and about how to involve other teachers in trialing it. A conceptual framework for the approach was developed and the thesis concludes with the suggestion that other teachers be recruited to an action-research program to further trial and develop the approach using my framework as a starting point to confirm the value of the approach for practical classroom teaching.

Scientific literacy and the reform of science education in Australia: a chemistry perspectiveHill, John Orford Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
There is considerable qualitative and quantitative data to suggest that chemistry in Australia is in a state of decline. This trend has been in evidence for the last fifteen years and is most evident from a progressive decline in demand for tertiary chemistry courses over this period despite an overall increase in demand for science courses in Australian universities. There is quantitative evidence to suggest that Australia is experiencing a ‘skills shortage’ of ‘trained chemists’ to support the development and sustainability of the chemical industry and, perhaps more significantly, the proportion of chemistry graduates entering the teaching profession is also decreasing. / This thesis examines the reasons for this decline in the status of Australian chemistry by conducting a series of interviews with Heads of Departments of Chemistry in Australian universities to find out their concerns on this issue and, more specifically, to ascertain the actions that they are enacting to address the decline in demand for tertiary chemistry courses and the difficulty in retaining students in the chemistry major. This process also revealed numerous constraints, most significantly, financial constraints, that impede ‘change’ in the tertiary chemistry sector. (For complete abstract open document)

Thinking in youth as actors-subjects capable of participating in a more effective way of social change, is to think of a way to enhance the opportunities for endogenous development. The theme of juvenile protagonism has been discussed in recent years as a way of encouraging the involvement of young and learning as a form of democratic participation. This dissertation research has as its theme the study of practices pedagogical in the Pedagogy of Alternating of Rural Family Houses and formation for the protagonism of rural youth. We conducted a social search of qualitative character, with the data collection instrument observations, questionnaires and interviews. Was use of the instruments of the Pedagogy of Alternating as a methodological option of directing research. It was understood that juvenile protagonism is inherent in the pedagogical Pedagogy of Alternating and teaching tools that foster the formation of the rural youth protagonism. It should be taken into account in this context, the contradictions of pedagogical practices and the different socio-cultural contexts to which the Rural Family Houses are inserted. It was felt that rural youth needs more social media channels and spaces of participation, especially in rural communities. Initiatives to ensure and at times foster protagonism of rural youth were identified and highlighted as actions that were beyond the youth activism.

January 2015 (has links)
Waldorf Education, established in 1919 in Germany by Rudolf Steiner, is present worldwide. Based on anthroposophy, it has a pedagogical strategy that includes physical, psychoemotional and spiritual development of the student. Among its features are seasonal teaching (concentrated teaching between 4 to 6 weeks), the strong presence of the arts and a cognitive process described by Goethe, which deals with the observation of a phenomenon until it arrives at its core. Six interviews with teachers were conduct in five schools, science classes observed in two Waldorf Schools, being from São Paulo and from a municipality in the São Paulo region. Documents such as periodic meetings of continuing education in Waldorf Pedagogy and curriculum builds were analyzed. The captured data was organized in eleven axes and the content analysis proposed by Bardin was used. This study provides a discussion about the Rudolf Steiner goals when applying pedagogy for the Science Teaching. The results show that Waldorf's Pedagogy m ain base of structure for Science Education is the goetheanístic phenomenology, especially for not disentangling the natural phenomena of a spiritual world and thus, through the observation practices, the student unconsciously understand the relationship between the material and spiritual world. It is yet to expect that the student will be able to re... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

January 2013 (has links)
This research aimed to analyze, through the negative dialectical method of the Frankfurt School, the theory of the cycles announced by author Phillipe Perrenoud, theorist who influenced the understanding of the cycles in Brazil since the nineties and proposed himself to theorize about how learning cycles should materialize in pedagogical practice and organizational structure in schools. The analysis of the abstracts of theses and dissertations studying thematic cycles, from 2000 to 2011, showed an absence of studies that have focused on analyzing the theory of learning cycles of Phillipe Perrenoud, which alerted us to a possible tendency to uncritical appropriation of this theory. The work was divided into three different moments. In the first section, entitled "Cycles in Brazil", we seek to insert readers in the thematic to be discussed further in the research through a "brief" history of the insertion of the cycles in Brazil aided by the study of abstracts of theses and dissertations achieved about the learning cycles in the period from 2000 to 2011, which have as research object the cycles in its different manifestations. In the second section, "Philippe Perrenoud: the thinker of the learning cycle", we seek to develop a descriptive synthesis of Perrenoud's theory of the learning cycles using their central works translated in Brazil and, therefore, that most influence the debate in the country about the learning cycles. And finally, the third and final section is entitled "The learning cycles in Perrenoud: when to state is to deny", in which we seek to make an analysis about the proposal of the learning cycle of Philippe Perrenoud with the assistance of the reflections of classical theorists of the Frankfurt School - Horkheimer, Marcuse and especially Adorno / Doutor
