Effects of peer tutoring on the reading fluency and comprehension of seventh grade studentsSwan, Meaghan Opuda 08 October 2014 (has links)
<p> This study examined the efficacy of peer tutoring, specifically Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS), as supplemental instruction for middle school students with reading difficulties. A multiple baseline across individuals design was used to demonstrate changes in oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. The results of this study suggest that students who participated in PALS did not substantially increase reading fluency or comprehension when analyzed on the basis of non-overlapping data points. Nonetheless, two of the three underperforming students improved their reading skills such that they were no longer in the at-risk range by the end of the study. The third lower-performing student did make important gains over the course of the study. Notably, the lower-performing participants perceived themselves as having made gains in reading and they attributed these gains to working with a partner. The limitations and implications of future research are discussed. </p>

<p> The purpose of this study was to report a more inclusive postsecondary graduation rate figure, improve the ability of postsecondary institutions to predict the likelihood that a student will graduate, and to help address challenges presented by the United States President and by the Kentucky General Assembly. The more inclusive graduation rate calculation is in contrast to the prevailing National Center for Education Statistics' (NCES) Graduation Rate Survey (GRS) calculation. The calculations used in this study incorporated data from the National Student Clearinghouse's (NSC) StudentTracker systems. The research population used in this study consisted of students who initially enrolled at the University of Louisville (UofL) in academic years 2000-01, 2001-02, or 2002-03. Using a more inclusive graduation rate calculation that counted a student as having graduated from any postsecondary institution, not just the institution where they initially enrolled yielded a graduation rate that was 10 percent higher for the research population than was reported under the prevailing methodology. The study created a Graduation Likelihood Model (GLM) to predict the likelihood that a first-time, full-time bachelor-degree-seeking student will graduate within six academic years. Eight independent variables were examined through chi-square and logistic regression (logit). The eight variables examined were gender, race/ethnicity, ACT, High School Grade Point Average (HSGPA), public high school (HS) vs. private HS, HS distance from campus, state/federal-grant/scholarship financial aid, and federal loan financial aid. In addition to running chi-square and logit on each variable, the procedures were run on the variables after they were included in four distinct categories: demographic, academic, pre-postsecondary academic and financial aid. The chi-square results showed that with the exception of HSGPA there was an association, albeit small, between the variables and successful graduation. All variables including HSGPA are to be used in the GLM, which can be used by postsecondary institutions to predict, at the time a student applies to the institutions, the likelihood that a student will graduate within six academic years. The GLM and the new calculation of graduation rates relate to initiatives set out by both the state of Kentucky and current US President Barack Obama. The new calculation provides a better way of assessing student achievement. At the time of initial enrollment, the GLM can be used to identify students, who may need additional assistance to obtain their degrees. .</p>

The Correlation Between the Geographical Region of a High School and the Enrollment Ratio of Males to Females in Accelerated College-Preparatory Level Mathematics CoursesLaTragna, Mary Anne 19 November 2014 (has links)
<p> Females, in this modern age of feminism, have excelled in all fields of study and graduate from college in larger numbers than males. However, few women go into the STEM fields (Hill, Corbett, & St. Rose, 2010). To close this gap in mathematics-related fields, it is paramount that high schools produce female students who are advanced in Mathematics. The problem was the underrepresentation of females in mathematical fields of study, with a more pressing issue of underrepresentation of females in college preparatory mathematics classes at the high school level. The purpose of this study was to determine if the geographical region of a high school contributed to the resulting ratio of males to females enrolled in college level mathematics courses. In this mixed methods study, 21 urban, 14 suburban, and 30 rural public school districts in Missouri, were selected and the ratio of males to females enrolled in Calculus for each district was obtained. The researcher's rationale for this comparison was that the culture of each geographical region created bias affecting females' choice in their fields of study. </p><p> The research question was: Does the ratio of males to females differ between urban, rural, and suburban high schools in advanced mathematics courses? Two types of analyses were applied in this study and obtained the following results. The data analyzed in the study did not support a difference in ratios when comparing urban, rural, and suburban schools, nor did it support a difference in male to female ratios enrolled in advanced placement coursework. The data did not support a relationship between the ratio of Calculus students and the district budget, but did yield a mild positive correlation when comparing the ratios of male to female students in Calculus and male to female mathematics teachers. </p><p> Historically, lower enrollment of women in the STEM fields than males is a trend supportable by the findings of this study. In rural and suburban areas there were fewer females than males enrolled in advanced mathematics. However, in the urban areas a slight difference yielded more females than males enrolled in similar coursework.</p>

Just Love| A Collaborative Evaluation of a Faith-Based School-Family-Community Partnership Through the Voices of the ChildrenHenry, Lynette M. 14 October 2014 (has links)
<p> Faith-based school-family-community partnerships have been a federal mandate over the past decade, yet little has been written about the outcomes of these faith-based partnerships. A need exists to understand if the potential in these faith-based partnerships is indeed realized in positive outcomes for students and schools. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a faith-based school-family-community partnership, Just Love. Just Love is a faith-based school-family-community partnership between a large suburban church and a Title 1, urban elementary school, Charisma Elementary School (Charisma ES), implemented in what is considered a "failing school". Just Love's purpose was to have the volunteers from the church provide love, care, supportive adult relationships and service to the teachers, students, and parents of Charisma ES through a comprehensive, systemic program: <b>Just Mentor</b> (i.e., a school-based mentoring program), <b>Just Connect</b> (i.e., a classroom adoption program), and <b>Just Rewards</b> (i.e., a school wide student incentives/rewards and parent involvement program). The Bryan and Henry (2012) School-Family-Community Partnership Process Model was used in developing Just Love.</p><p> The Model for Collaborative Evaluations (MCE) was used in this evaluation to actively engage stakeholders during the evaluation process and to answer the evaluation questions. A mixed methods research design was used. Differences in student outcomes (i.e. academic, behavior and attendance) were examined between Charisma ES and another matching school without a faith-based school-family-community partnership were analyzed with descriptive statistics, paired T-tests, and mixed ANOVAs. Student outcomes were also investigated relevant to different aspects of the Just Love programs including adopted classrooms compared to non-adopted classrooms and mentored students compared to non-mentored students. </p><p> In addition, this study gave 20 children (i.e., mentees) who had experienced all aspects of the Just Love programs an opportunity to share their perceived satisfactions, experiences, challenges and recommendations regarding Just Love through the method of photo elicitation including picture selection and interviews. The transcribed data from the interviews and the pictures used in the photo-elicitation process were analyzed using thematic analysis with a focus on capturing the voices of the students.</p><p> Student outcome data were collected for three years from 2010-2013, with 2009 as a baseline year. The findings from the quantitative aspect of this study revealed that students in Charisma ES made significantly greater gains in reading than students in Joseph ES following the implementation of the partnership. Further, number of disciplinary referrals decreased dramatically at Charisma ES in contrast to Joseph ES whose disciplinary referrals increased. Attendance rates differed significantly between the two schools with students in Joseph Elementary School having higher attendance rates than students in Charisma Elementary School.</p><p> On average, both adopted and non-adopted classes made gains in reading in each of the three years although adopted classes appeared to have higher reading scores in 2011-2012 than non-adopted classes. The average number of disciplinary referrals per class was lower for adopted classes than for non-adopted classes in 2011-2012, one academic year after the Just Love partnership program was implemented. Concerning attendance, there were no significant differences in attendance rates between students in adopted and non-adopted classes at Charisma ES.</p><p> Mentored students at Charisma made significant improvements in reading. They also had a dramatically lower average number of disciplinary referrals than non-mentored students in 2012-2013, just two years after the Just Love partnership was implemented. When compared to non-mentored students, mentored students had significantly higher attendance than non-mentored students in 2011-2012, just one year after the Just Love partnership began. Further, attendance appeared to have a positive relation to the number of years students were mentored.</p><p> Findings from the qualitative aspect of this study were captured using thematic analysis of the children's perceived satisfactions, experiences, challenges and recommendations concerning Just Love. The six categories that emerged from the data were (a) perceptions of Just Love, (b) positive feelings, (c) positive relationships and connectedness, (d) classroom and school climate, (e) experiences, and (f) support and resources. Each of these categories comprised a number of themes that aligned with identified protective factors and developmental assets necessary for the resiliency of and successful outcomes for children. </p><p> Taken together, the findings reveal that Just Love, a faith-based school-family-community partnership contributed to improved student outcomes in reading achievement, behavior and attendance and provided important protective factors and developmental assets for the children in Charisma ES. The Just Love partnership program presents a viable model for schools, school districts, and faith-based and community organizations that have a desire to foster resilience in children at-risk, generate positive academic, behavior, and attendance outcomes for children and decrease the chances of children growing up and developing risky behaviors. Implications for practice, training, evaluation, policy, and future research are discussed. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)</p>

GEAR UP| What difference does it make?Villar, Jeremy Valentino 25 July 2014 (has links)
<p> The public investment in GEAR UP, a federal program that seeks to promote college access and readiness among underserved youths, and limited research on program outcomes substantiated a need to evaluate GEAR UP's impact on youths attending a major urban community college. This study analyzed the archival dataset of Latino community college students (<i>N</i> = 91) to determine the impact of GEAR UP on college access and readiness. The treatment group (<i>N</i> = 47) consisted of a student cohort who attended a GEAR UP participating secondary schools from 2005 through 2011, and the non-treatment group (<i>N</i> = 44) of a similar student demographic cohort who attended the same secondary institutions but not GEAR UP.</p><p> The research variables included the English and math placement levels, financial aid application status, and cumulative grade point average of both cohorts. The result of a Pearson Chi Square test (<i>p</i> = .045 at 95% confidence level) demonstrated a statistically significant impact of GEAR UP on the financial aid application filing status among Latino youths but not the other variables. Personal interviews (<i>N</i> = 24) were conducted from the Treatment Group sample to determine the effectiveness of various interventions activities of GEAR UP. The textual coding analysis of the interview transcripts highlighted the presence of tutors and mentors, field trips, and financial aid workshops as effective interventions in promoting school belongingness and helping Latino youths to consider the benefits of higher education.</p><p> The research study conclusions yielded several recommendations to further enhance the quality of GEAR UP. First, policymakers should consider expanding the scope of GEAR UP from financial aid awareness into financial literacy. Second, GEAR UP school coordinators, teachers, and tutors and mentors should intensify a focus on college readiness, including the development of non-cognitive skills. Other notable recommendations to enhance GEAR UP would be to provide more funding for tutors and mentors, college field trips, and financial aid workshops, improve collaboration and communication between high school and college partners, and the creation of a national database system to track student and program outcomes.</p>

<p> The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate teachers' perceptions about the impact of the McREL Teacher Evaluation System on their professional growth. The sample comprised 15 teachers of students in Kindergarten to Grade 4 in a suburban New Jersey school district who participated in Year 1 implementation of a new standards-based teacher evaluation model. Participants were asked to explore the professional teaching standards in the McREL Teacher Evaluation System. The conceptual framework included adult learning, critical thinking, and reflective practice. The themes that emerged defined a new teacher-driven interpretation of leadership and a collective responsibility to a shared vision of student learning. The study highlighted the expectations of meeting the learning needs of a more diverse population of students; applying content knowledge, specifically the Common Core State Standards; facilitating learning through various instructional strategies and modalities that cultivated critical thinking with colleagues and contemporary students; and engaging in reflection of teacher practice as a significant catalyst for growth. The study also emphasized the need for strategic systems of strong organizational support as essential to a successful implementation process.</p>

Principals' Understanding of Teacher Evaluations Connected to the Colorado Student Assessment ProgramLee, Christopher M. 12 August 2014 (has links)
<p> This qualitative grounded analysis involved exploring the knowledge and understanding school principals have on teacher evaluations and the connections to students’ scores on the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP). The problem was that Colorado does not have a comprehensive and consistent standards-based teacher evaluation system managed by highly trained administrative evaluators capable of providing evaluation marks representative of actual teacher performance and competency levels based on student achievement from CSAP results. The purpose of this qualitative grounded analysis was to create a theoretical model based on the exploration of the knowledge and understanding school principals have on teacher evaluations being connected to students’ Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) scores in order to effectively evaluate teacher performance in the classroom. The research questions examined and analyzed data from the perspective of school principals on teacher evaluation proficiency marks and student proficiency scores on the CSAP. Interview responses from 10 school principals were analyzed with the NVivo qualitative analysis software revealing emerging themes. Critical analysis of the themes produced courses of action and recommendations for school principals to improve the evaluation process of teachers as connected to student CSAP scores to improve classroom instruction. Key results indicated a need for school principals to consider the themes of classroom environment; funding, administrative support, and an over haul of teacher contracts that include compensation and advancement. </p>

<p> International assessments such as the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) have exhibited United States students specifically in the fourth and eighth grades, are not performing well when compared to their international peers. Educational stakeholders including parents, teachers, politicians, and the business community are putting more pressure on schools to improve their student’s academic performance. The stakeholders want improved performance on not only American assessments but also on international tests. The purpose of the current qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of educators in the United States to investigate the possible use of alternative educational innovations as a means for bridging the achievement gap between learners. The qualitative research study involved investigating the perceptions of 52 educational professionals through an online web-based survey and analyzing the data using the three steps outlined by Merriam. Two themes emerged from the data and two subthemes were revealed. The themes were finances and training and professional development. The subthemes were funding allocation and teacher compensation.</p>

Faculty and student perceptions of distance education using television : the Ball State University M.B.A. modelWallace, Joanna R. January 1992 (has links)
This study was designed to identify faculty and participant perceptions regarding Ball State University's distance education model known as MBA/TV and report on its apparent effectiveness. A second purpose was to examine both motivations for and barriers to participation in this distance education model.Two surveys (faculty and student) were designed to collect data for this study. Responses from faculty included their perceptions of student performance, student inquiries and participation, administrative and logistical support services, technology (performance and limitations), and program strengths/limitations. Responses from students included their demographic profile, motivations for participation (logistical, personal, and career), perceptions of the program strengths/limitations, faculty, technology, and administrative support services. Responses to all questions were reported by number and percentage. Responses to open-end questions were separated into categories and reported by number.The major findings included: Males (67%) outnumbered females (32%) by more than two to one. More students were married (78.9%) than single (20.1%). Nearly all (96.1%) had experienced good TV reception at their site. Many rated issues such as receiving the program in their hometown(s) (71.1%) and offering it at convenient times (80.8%) as important. Other issues rated as important by participants included: the opportunity to earn an MBA (90.9%); the opportunity to upgrade work skills (75.1%); and the opportunity to learn more about business concepts (83.2%).Analysis of the faculty survey revealed the following: 75100 percent of the MBA/TV students demonstrated understanding and resourcefulness in completing class assignments (78.9%); less than fifty percent of the students contributed to the quality of class discussions (78.9%); and mail communication with students had either minor problems (solved) or had always gone smoothly (78.9%).Additional investigation was needed regarding educational resource and training needs of both students and faculty. Also, attitudes of faculty toward distance learners and administrative dictates requiring televised instruction should be further explored.3 / Department of Educational Leadership

<p> The number of students of community college students in need of remedial math courses continues to increase each year; however, the success and retention rate for student enrolled in remedial math courses remains extremely low. The purpose of this study was to examine factors students characterize as impeding their ability to successfully complete their remedial math courses. Using a mixed method analysis, individual interviews and surveys were utilized to investigate this issue. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with EOPS students who had attempted algebra (Math 020) more than once, but were not enrolled in an algebra (Math 020) course in spring 2013. Based on their perceptions, seven categories of barriers emerged. The seven categories were then used as a means for developing a survey instrument for phase Il of this study. The surveys were administered to 208 students who enrolled in algebra (Math 020) during the spring 2013 semester. The impetus behind the surveys was to examine if the general population of algebra (Math 020) students had the same perceptions of the factors that impede their ability to be successful in their remedial math classes. Data were examined to investigate if there were any correlations or significance among any of the perceived factors. Although interviewees and survey participants indicated they had similar beliefs in regards to factors they perceived impeded their ability to succeed in their remedial math sequences, no correlations or significance was found among any of the data examined.</p>
