Kolář, Karel January 2014 (has links)
Correspondence physics competition of MFF UK - FYKOS - is extracurricular physical educational activity organized by university students for upper secondary school students. FYKOS is organized by Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague (MFF UK). FYKOS' main goals are: dissemination of physics, education of upper secondary school students, establishing conditions for creation of social bindings between participants (and organizers) and propagation of possibility of studies at MFF UK. This work is the first complete text about running of FYKOS and it is also the first systematical feedback from FYKOS' participants and FYKOS' organizers. The first part is a description of all FYKOS' activities (correspondence part, camps, FYKOSí Fyziklání and others). The second chapter includes an analysis of statistical survey of FYKOS' participants. Other chapters are dedicated to the description of gathering feedback and its interpretation. The feedback was made in several ways - interviews, web questionnaire and email questionnaire. Special attention was turned to study and professional development of former participants. Acquired knowledge lead up to formulation of possible improvements of FYKOS which are introduced in the last part of this theses. It was discovered that among respondents of...

Advancing integrated research at the University of the Witwatersrand: an investigation using integral theory

Foss, Kanina January 2016 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Science, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, University of the Witwatersrand. Johannesburg, 2016. / The challenges facing humanity are presenting at an unprecedented scale and complexity. Climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, ocean depletion, poverty, inequality, and failing health care and educational systems are among the problems that have come to be defined as "wicked" because of their spread and interconnectedness. At the same time, there has been an increasing realisation that multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary (MIT) research is critical to addressing these complex global challenges. This research identified some of the barriers and enablers to MIT research at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), based on interviews with researchers and research managers at the University who have been involved in conducting or facilitating MIT research. Using errors and misconceptions as a resource to teach functions to grade 11 learners

Malahlela, Moloko Victor January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Wits School of Education and the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science by combination of coursework and research. Johannesburg, 5 June 2017 / This research report focussed on the teaching of the function concept directed at the errors the learners make as well as the misconceptions which could be associated with those errors. The study was conducted at a secondary school in Johannesburg, South Africa. This was a qualitative error analysis study which also had a form of interventional or remedial teaching. The research was driven by the following research questions: (1) What errors and misconceptions do grade 11 learners show on functions?, (2) What learning affordances and constraints can be created if teaching is directed at learners’ errors and misconceptions? and, (3) To what extent can the learners’ achievement on the topic functions be boosted if teaching is directed at learners’ errors and misconceptions? The study used a purposive sample of six grade 11 mathematics learners from a group of 34 learners. To answer these questions, I structured the study to encompass numerous phases of data collection using different instruments. Firstly, I constructed a test instrument and used it on this group of grade 11 learners. These learners had been taught functions earlier in the year, so the test was diagnostic to measure the cognitive levels of the learner on the concept and also to establish the errors made and misconceptions they carried onto the section from other sections or picked up from the function concept. The study was mainly based on the constructivism theory of learning and teaching, but also had other theories to link to it such at the socio-cultural theory, the APOS (actions, process, object and schema) theory, the concept image and concept definition as well as the variation theory. The errors I picked up from the pre-test I classified and analysed using the conceptual framework grounded on the abovementioned theories. It was this analysis which enabled me to structure the desired intervention program together with the teacher after which I conducted a post-test with the subjects. Other forms of data collection such as the interview and observation were employed during the study. I used the interview to get clarity from the learners’ pre-test questions responses, whilst the observation I used during the intervention lessons the teacher had with the learners. Indeed the findings were that, while there was a substantial improvement on learner performance on the post-test, it appeared clearly that cognitive levels of the learners on the function concept had been enhanced. This improvement of performance was a result of the teaching that was directed at the errors, which also interprets to having created a favourable environment which could be interpreted as learning affordances to boost the learners’ understanding of the function concept. / LG2017

A percepção pública sobre os contadores: bem ou mal na foto? / Public perception of accountants: good-looking in pictures?

Azevedo, Renato Ferreira Leitão 27 September 2010 (has links)
In the last two decades, the decline in both number and quality of students choosing accounting programs has been a worldwide source of concern to academicians and practitioners. According to Albrecht and Sack (2000), that decline is a consequence of several factors such as changes in business environment, decrease in salary levels, development of alternatives careers perceived as more attractive to students and lack information and/or misunderstanding related to accounting career. For Carnegie and Napier (2010), comprehension of such external images related to accounting career and accountants is important for assessing the roles of these professionals in a wider social context. Accounting profession needs to project an image of confidence, respectability and to offer challenges, rewards and prospects in order to attract and retain the most talented, professional and competent students. It is well known for decades that students consider stereotypes about different careers when deciding among majors and careers (DECOSTER, 1971). To support a better understanding related to this phenomenon, the objective of this research is to identify and analyze whether the accounting profession is negatively stereotyped by public perception according to characteristics such as creativity, dedication to study, teamwork, communication, leadership, risk taking and ethics. Other analyses refer to accountants stereotypes in relation to gender, academic background and educational level. Based on an adapted photo-survey, with 1,034 randomly selected respondents, and tests of differences between means, the central hypothesis of this study was rejected: it is not possible to state that accounting professionals are negatively stereotyped assuming the characteristics of creativity, dedication studies, teamwork, communication, leadership, risk taking and ethics. There was further acceptance of the hypothesis that accounting professionals are perceived as being male, supporting the gender stereotype for the profession. On the perception of accounting professionals across different academic backgrounds, this study rejected the hypothesis that the external perception in relation to the accounting profession is more negative than the internal perception (individuals with accounting background). Also, there were no significant differences in education levels, but for the elementary level when focusing on the creativity factor, which resulted in positive perception. Implications for practice and recommendations for future studies are both present in the last section of this study.

Teacher-Learner Interactions in a Hybrid Setting Compared to a Traditional Mathematics Course

Seneres, Alice Windsor January 2017 (has links)
The in-class learning environments of a traditional and hybrid mathematics course were compared. The hybrid course had half the face-to-face meetings as the traditional course; outside of class, the students in the hybrid section completed asynchronous online assignments that involved watching content-delivery videos. Moving the content delivery outside of the classroom for the hybrid format had an impact on the interactions between the students and the professor inside the classroom. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of verbal discourse determined that the hybrid class format reduced the amount of in-class time devoted to direct instruction and increased the level of student discourse. Students assisted other students, had the freedom to make mistakes, and were able to receive personal guidance from the professor. The professor was able to address student misconceptions on formative assessments in class. Previous studies of the hybrid class model had focused on comparing differences in examination scores, GPAs, and pre- and post-test scores between the traditional and hybrid class model rather than comparing what is occurring inside the classroom. Quantifying what effect the shift from the traditional to the hybrid class model had on discourse inside the classroom is a first step towards confirming how the different methods of content delivery affects the in-class learning environment, and provides insight into certain pedagogic advantages the hybrid format may offer.

Pre-service And In-service Preschool Teachers

Yilmaz, Simge 01 March 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This research aimed at investigating pre-service and in-service preschool teachers&rsquo / views regarding creativity in early childhood education by determining similarities and/or differences among their views. The data of the study was gathered from 10 pre-service and 11 in-service teachers by asking their views about creativity in early childhood education. This study has been realized by the qualitative research method and the data was gathered through a type of interview, namely focus group technique. The seven basic interview questions developed by Aslan &amp / Cansever (2009) for primary school teachers were rephrased considering early childhood education context. In the data analysis procedure, four basic themes were constituted: &ldquo / teachers&#039 / views on creativity&rdquo / , &ldquo / teachers&#039 / views on creative people&rdquo / , &ldquo / teachers&rsquo / views on the importance of creativity in early childhood education&rdquo / , and &ldquo / teachers&rsquo / views on the obstacles to creativity in early childhood education&rdquo / . The results demonstrated that although every participant had their own creativity definitions, they agreed on some common ideas about creativity. The participants were aware of the value of creativity in preschool education and they stated that they prepare and implement creative activities to nurture children&rsquo / s creativity as well as stating that there are many obstacles to achieve this goal. They indicated that these obstacles are mostly based on school administrators, teachers, and parents. Moreover, it was concluded that the most striking difference between pre-service and in-service early childhood teachers&rsquo / views was the fact that unlike in-service teachers, only the pre-service teachers gave some recommendations to tackle with the obstacles to children&rsquo / s creativity.
