As principais culturas atacadas pertencem as famílias Malvaceae (algodão), Fabaceae (soja e feijão), Solanaceae (batata e tomate), Brassicaceae (brócolis, canola, couve-flor e couve), Cucurbitaceae (abóbora, melancia e melão) e Asteraceae (alface e crisântemo). / The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is an important pest that attacks more than 500 species of plants. The main crops attacked belong to the Malvaceae family (cotton), Fabaceae (soybean and beans), Solanaceae (potatoes and tomatoes), Brassicaceae (broccoli, canola, cauliflower and cabbage), Cucurbitaceae (pumpkin, watermelon and melon) and Asteraceae (lettuce and chrysanthemum). Chemical control is the main method used to control B. tabaci. Despite the large amount of insecticides registered for the control and the intensive use of these products there have been large population outbreaks in crops. This indicates that possibly the insecticides used in whitefly control have not been effective. So this study aimed to select efficient insecticides to control adults of B. tabaci. Therefore, we studied 17 insecticides: acephate, acetamiprid, alpha-cypermethrin, beta-cyfluthrin, beta-cypermethrin, bifenthrin, cypermethrin, esfenvalerate, chlorfenapyr, cartap, fenpropathrin, chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, gamma-cyhalothrin, imidacloprid, lambda- cyhalothrin and thiamethoxam. These products only cartap, chlorpyrifos, bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr were efficient in controlling whitefly. These insecticides have fast acting control of whiteflies (<24 hours) and they caused 91.74; 85.27; 81.45 and 76.79% mortality to the pest, respectively. The cartap, chlorpyrifos, bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr have low residual control of whiteflies (<1 week) and they are not selective to Orius tristicolor (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae).
