Geometrical conventionalism and the Theory of Relativity: can we know the true geometry of space?

Mueller, Paul Jacob 17 October 2011 (has links)
The central question which will be addressed in this paper is: can we know the true geometry of space? My answer will be in the negative, but not first without heavy qualification. The thesis concerns the notion of truth in mathematical science, i.e. physical science for which mathematics (particularly geometry) is integral, and will ask whether we can know with certainty, or via some empirical test, which geometry is an accurate description of the actual universe. It will be a fairly historical approach, but hopefully not entirely so. We will begin with a 17th century debate on the nature of space between Newton and Leibniz and how Kant proposed to resolve the debate, and then move on to the views of the late 19th century mathematician Poincaré, but we will end with Einstein's Theory of Relativity - a theory which uses a very different geometry to which most of us are perhaps accustomed. In general, the goal will be to better understand the nature of geometry and its role in scientific theory; specifically, however, it will be an attempt to answer, in the negative, the central question before us. / Graduate

Divulgação científica no ensino médio = a equação relativística entre massa e energia / Science popularization in high school : the relativistic equation between mass and energy

Abstract: The number of publishings concerning topics related to the Teaching of Science is greater each day. On the other hand, the way Physics is taught in the classrooms nowadays is still considered old-fashioned and not stimulating. Research in this area shows that introducing Modern and Contemporary Physics can be important to stimulate students to learn physics. A way to facilitate this introduction may be through the use of science popularization materials. This way, this study has the aim of making it evident that science popularization texts, associated with the mediation of the teacher, can significantly contribute to improve the interpretation of students concerning the elements of Einstein's Relativity Theory and its implications. To do so, we have worked with a chapter from the science popularization book "Albert Einstein and his inflatable universe", with students from different groups in all the grades of secondary school in two schools in Campinas, State of São Paulo, and gave them narrative questions, with the aim of obtaining a greater reflection from the students about the information in the text. The answers were analyzed based on categories and some notions of Speech Analysis, developed and promoted in Brazil by Eni P. Orlandi. Among the changes in the students' interpretation, we highlighted that the students acquired knowledge about the scientist Albert Einstein and some aspects of his relativity theory. Besides that, in the presented answers, it was possible to observe different ways of repetition, from the empiric to the historical (terminology proposed by Orlandi), as an indicator of different degrees of learning. / Mestrado / Ensino e Práticas Culturais / Mestre em Educação
